Now as an adult when I look back on the film I seriously wonder what types of drugs these folks where taking. Firstly I too would like to partake and secondly they turned a Cold War analog into a HP Lovecraft novella (which of course makes it that much more awesome). They just should have called it At The Mountains of Cobra-la.

This movie really pissed me off about Falcon. My dad was a Green Beret, he was highly disciplined and wouldn't shurk duty. He instilled that in us. The B.E.T. would have been a great toy. The snake spear was taken from a Conan movie. A snake was used as an arrow to kill someone. With it's weirdness, I still like it.

    • @JB0071051982
      @JB0071051982 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree this movie is pretty trippy. Thankfully, I can still enjoy it as a guilty pleasure. I am glad that in the G.I. Joe comic books Falcon is a much stronger character and is more line with how a person would expect a Green Beret to behave. In fact, I would say that Falcon's action figure is one of the better figures to come out of the late 1980's and his accessories rock.
I find it really funny that even with the reputation this movie has, Hasbro eventually made action figures based on Big Lob and Pythona( even thought her figure was released under a different name and thankfully a convention exclusive like Big Lob was). Nemesis Enforcer even got an updated action figure in 2008(under the name Nemesis Immortal in a comic book two pack with Falcon). Personally, I would have not bothered with any of the Cobra La characters getting newer style action figures.

In one of the early episodes we see the back of CCs head and it was blue. In another early episode destro was sickened by CCs face while CC ate. So it seems like the cobra-la idea was already in the works back in 84- 85.

I appreciate the well rounded review and for me I will always remember the day in 1987 well as me my Mom and Grandfather went out to a swapmeet where I found some Star Wars figures and when I got home the freshly taped VHS casette was waiting that my stepdad taped off of bootleg WGN Chicago cable we got here in LA. What I lived was the then current wave of 1987 figures was already on the shelves and most were in my collection by the time it came out. The story has its funkiness but I really loved the introduction of the new characters and the stage they set for a new era of animated cartoons that didnt happen.

Gary Kurtz wanted to do a similar thing in the Star Wars films, freeze Han Solo in ESB, then kill him heroically in ROTJ in order to give the films more weight, but Lucas wanted a fairytale ending in order to protect toy sales. I guess the Ewoks were the Star Wars equivalent of Cobra-La as well, jumping the shark with absurdities in order to sell more toys.

Transformers the Movie is one of my favourite movies ever, and now the intro to G. I. Joe the Movie is one of my favourite sequences of animation ever. I might watch that intro quite a few more times but I doubt I'll watch the rest of the movie very often.

Another thing that pissed me off about Falcon is that he has no reason to be arrogant. Almost every character in this film has a bad ass moment where they defeat their nemesis on their own. Falcon constantly gets his ass handed to him, never does well in his training montage, and just got tossed around by Serpentor and Golobulus.

I am surprised you did not bring up showing all the higher leadership, including Major Bludd, Storm Shadow, Baroness, Scrap-Iron, and how great it was for CC to scream "HOGWASH!" and stand up to Serpentor.
Also that they showed the high level of security on Cobra island including CG's, Troopers and Officers (which haven't been out for years) scrambling to the alert and the scene where CC thinks it would be "Tragic" if anything happened to Serpentor and leads everyone the wrong way so Pythona can enter the inner chambers. After that it went down hill fast and lost focus. I think if they went the Ninja route, it would have been better.

Thanks for the review. Just as I described on Facebook in a post about this video...."Top Tier"
I will have to admit to liking the this movie a bit. I think because, at the time, GI Joe was more sort of on the back burner for me.... I was able to collect some of the figures, and vehicles, and I watched the show when it was on, but I was more tied to the Transformers....and Robotech (there is a cartoon that put the consequences of war in full view of its audience). I would gain a new appreciation for the joes much later when I got to follow some of Mr. Hamma's work in the comics through reprints in trade paperback form. It would figure I'd dig his work on GIJoe....he is one of my favorite writers on another property he spent some time writing. Once again, thank you HCC. This was a fantastic video, as always.

ok so bravo brother. excellent review. I really appreciate the disclaimer at the beginning as well. So I found this review very enlightening and professional and surprisingly un biased. I applaud that. I actually agreed with most things that you said here even though i admit that I do like this movie very much. Yes there are aspects that I wish could have been better and you pointed out some very valid points as to why the movie really does not work and is a bit of a mess. I am so happy you had positive things to say about Sgt. Slaughter because to me he made the movie. I guess the only thing I really disagree with you on is the origin of Cobra Commander. It is very rushed and I don't think we get the whole story here, but I never did dig the origin in the comics and the fact that he was JUST a human being. He just had to be more than that somehow. But kudos for pointing out in the end The Commander was the hero. Thank you for that. So in conclusion I have to say you could be the best critic I have ever heard because you didnt actually attack the movie like most critics do and try to bend peoples will to your own. You presented the facts and pointed out the strengths and weaknesses and even though you did in the end say I dont like this movie, you also said draw your own conclusions. Great review!

    What if Golobulus was lying?
In my version of the movie, Golobulus is Dr Venom who was sent away by Cobra Commander to do Bioterror research. He invented the Cobra La (short for Cobra Laboratories) story to gain Serpentor and everyone else’s blind obedience. Cobra Commander was “once a man;” he didn’t get mutated until AFTER being hit by the spore. Everyone in Cobra La was experimented on and that is why they don’t look human.
Story follows as normal, except Duke dies giving Falcon the motivation to get squared away.
I honestly love the movie, but I definitely see everyone’s dislike and they do have good points.

the only reason i kind of like it is i was born in 91 and i am a daughter of a joe fan and watched this movie a shit ton and the transformers movie same amount of time and i agree with every single point you have said. i have a respect for it only for a get away from parents divorce other than that it was dog shit and that's taking it mildly. pythona and the guards where my fav they just where cool looking to me and i was sad when one got a figure but the other didn't. till $50 figure came out that is way to over priced for a kids toy. i've been a fan of joe for 27 year. grew up fucking up my dads collection so much hes really good at repainting them. to this day he knows the type of paint to what medals and insignias are on a lot of characters and he was a fan of comics not the cartoon. he's so much of a fan he is the one who oks the cosplays in one of the gi joe cosplay groups and makes the "life size" play sets for conventions yojoe and big lob out lol jk fyi i did think he was annoying to. best character in that scene has to be i can't remember if it's based on hama or one of his friends from vietnam like i know snake eyes is aka tunnel rat

28:00 - BUT we've also seen that Cobra Commander has a normal human skin whenever he wore a hood and one time we saw that he had normal human hands as well. That just doesn't mix well with the Cobra-La origin where we're supposed to believe that all this time he had a blue skin. Even his eye colour is different!
IMO, only way to make sense of this is that Cobra-La mind controlled* Cobra higher ups and that whole origin was a lie to easily take over Cobra's forces. Also, notice that when we see CC in present day having a blue skin that he's in the process of mutating into a reptilian creature. And then you have the whole "I was once a man" thing, perhaps indicating the mind control was fading away as there was no longer any need for it.
[[*If they planted the idea of Serpentor then surely that means they're capable of messing with peoples minds?]]

I hated this movie too and thought wtf about Cobra La. It did give us Jinx though so I'm grateful for that. I was always bothered by the fact she fought better blindfolded. Undergoing training without the use of her eyes is one thing. Insisting on wearing blindfolds in battle is another matter.
I suppose those Cobra La and Lunartix figures would work well together.

actually, duke wasn't the only one set to die. the captured group of joes with Roadblock Jaye, the guy with the parrot, and snake eyes...amongst others, were all set to die. the scene where they escape but are caught by the vine things, you'll notice they wrap around d their necks. they were suppose to be strangled to death and left on display for the joes in the climax. and why roadblock says "that kills GI Joes" in one of his ryhms when waring Hawk about Cobra La, it killed them.

Are you sure? Because near the end of the movie we see all those characters break free from their vine cocoons and join the final battle. Could you provide a source for where you found this information from?

  • @johncaulfield8935

I have thought of one way to tie Cobra to Cobra-La while having Cobra Commander still remain human. So here’s my idea:
CC was once an explorer who went on an expedition in an unexplored region of the Himalayas. During the expedition, he is captured by Cobra-La guards and is tortured for some time, including being disfigured by the spores. He is eventually taken to Golobulus for judgement. Golobulus initially wants the explorer executed, but the explorer begs for his life, stating he would serve Golobulus. Golobulus decides that perhaps having a human on their side could be useful. Golobulus agrees to spare the mans life and sends him back out into the world to raise an army and conquer Earth in the name of Cobra-La. The explorer would become Cobra Commander and lead the terrorist organization of Cobra.
Not a perfect concept, and I’m sure there are plenty of holes in it, but this was really the best thing I could come up with

@@johncaulfield8935 To be honest, I consider Cobra Commander to be a human/Cobra-la hybrid (in my version of course) due to one of the parents being human, he looked more human under certain conditions and more Cobra-Lan when in similar circumstances, still trying to figure how it all works out though.

Clearly in the cartoon he was white, all the other Cobra La had the same skin tone. But for some reason Cobra Commander was blue?

My best friend and I managed to see this before it aired. A friend's dad was a marine stationed in Japan and brought back a VHS tape about a year before it aired. No one believed us that there was a G I Joe movie. The intro was amazing, and the good parts made it worth watching for me. Yeah, I thought Cobra-La was dumb, but LOVED Pythona. As kids we were so mad that Optimus died, but Duke lived. We wanted that switched so badly!

I felt sorry for Cobra Commander. It was his fault he was a loser. He was even qualifying to be a military leader(Noble man with no training). He wasn’t even given any of the Cobra La technology, but had to make up his own . He was a completely out of his element since he had no understanding of humans or their cultures.

Hmm, what alot of things that I think is overlooked is the"inhumanoids"! That fact that a modern society and civilization has to battle something unknown and older predating humanity! Certain episodes of the original series seems to show how modern science has deviated in new directions! The first introduction of cobra commanders face seen for the first time eating in front of destroying in the M.A.S.S. 5 part series, the further adventures of g.i.Joe with the fatal fluffier in the pyramid of darkness, the synthoids in both the attempt of cobra to replace military personnel at the command level with loyal synthetic people, plus the 2 part episode involving shipwreck and his romantic relationship with Mara, who was a experimental cobra project who had gills and could breath underwater! The revelation of lady jaye as a distant cousin of destro and the cthulu creature under the family castle! if you top it off the creation of serpentor and the sequel episode of a post episode of cobra commander using a discharged "dialtone" used to communicate with the same creature under castle destroyed to attack serpentor! There is aspects of cobra having technology that was out of the normal range of conventional weapons with the "red rocket" restaurants chain financed by Extensive Enterprises and the photon warheads mounted to the missiles on the restaurant roof!

I didn't necessarily hate this movie. By the time this came out I lost all hope once I saw Iceberg get changed into a Killer Whale...and frankly that whole season was bad. I did like Galobulous and Nemesis Enforcer but hated that they had any involvement with Cobra. I remember watching this and thinking oh...another group that G.I. Joe could fight...and maybe even Cobra. Especially since I knew that the Inhumanoids existed in the same universe as G.I. Joe and the Transformers. ...but then my hopes were crushed when they showed Cobra Commander's relationship to them. I still go back to watch a few awesome scenes but I haven't watched it all the way through since it aired. That intro though!!! Great video HCC788!

Your review is spot on. Transformers deserved to do better at the box office--I saw it a couple of months ago in the theatrical re-release and the theater was packed and got a great reaction. This movie, on the other hand, while not abysmal, was just lackluster and outright weird. No characters from the show to connect with, all those new characters we couldn't connect with, the chickening out on killing Duke, and the whole Cobra-La mess. Oh, and no cool rock soundtrack. It was right to have gone straight to TV. But where are the dongs and va-jay-jays? Are you going to do a video on that?
