    I’m still getting used to my iVolga high D (same issues with consistent bell note there), but it’s just beautiful and sounds great. I love the feeling of having actual wood for an instrument

    Hi Stephanie, what a thorough review of a beautiful whistle. I have kerry alto F whistle that is indeed much louder than the iVolga. Nice you took the Celtic Hymn to demonstrate the sound. If I'm right, this was one of the first projects you organised. Way beyond my capabilities then, but it sure inspired me to subscribe to your channel.

      How are they? I'm guessing not bad if you own multiple. Lol. I've been debating on aluminum vs wood for my first low whistle.

    Hearing you play makes me want to practise more! Love your use of the little micro passing notes and ornaments, it's apparent you've put alot of hours of practise in. I bought a Tony Dixon low D polymer whistle from watching one of your videos last year sometime and now I want a wooden whistle. The tone is so relaxing.
    I'm interested to know how blowing harder causes the break into a higher octave. one would think that by increasing the velocity the pitch would raise, but we get the jump to the higher octave, it's interesting.
    Mind sharing your method of recording videos with reverb effect on your whistles? I have a USB mic and laptop, was wondering how you do it? =)

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your lovely comments :)
      As for airflow - I've linked some interesting reading below :) Put very simply, changing the velocity causes your air stream to hit the edge of the blade a little differently and bounce everything around in the tube somewhat differently, producing a higher pitch. You'll need to read into the physics of it for a complete description, but it's too much to type here:
      www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/woodwind.html
      There's a nice discussion on The Session about it too:
      thesession.org/discussions/8755
      As for reverb, I still use this method:
      th-cam.com/video/qOZtEJ9tfzM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4COHgkrl3dPeTaBj
      But I have an updated video here with easy ways to add reverb:

      You're welcome, and thank you also. =) It's so thoughtful of you to share these links, I really appreciate it.
      It's so interesting learning of the physics involved in the workings of instruments, I can tell by the text in the link it is exactly the thing to answer my thoughts about the whistle. =)
      I bought the low D whistle last year but have been picking it up the past few months after seeing your 'Foggy Dew' whistle arrangement. I've watched a number of your videos and am surprised I missed your tutorials on adding reverb to videos. I would love to eventually learn to use reverb for whistle and ukulele because though I love the live sound of these instruments, they don't translate well to raw recordings in my opinion. Though it's nice when you include the unedited sound alongside the enhanced sound in your tutorials. I've never heard of the Sony Vegas software before so thanks for taking the time to let me know. =)

      @@ukefan9 they've discontinued Movie Studio now and it's SUCH a shame. It really was a fantastic program. If you have an old laptop with Windows 7 and can get an old version, it's really wonderful. Otherwise it's about $200 to buy it now. There are lots of great free software options out there though. DaVinci Resolve might be worth looking at! 😊 quite complicated though 🤦‍♀️🤣

    • @ukefan9

      @@CutiepieTinWhistle haha yes 🤦‍♀🤣 When I searched 'Sony Vegas Free Download' earlier I downloaded some thing and my windows security notification told me it was an 'unwanted app' 🤣so I swiftly removed it then searched 'Sony Vegas official download' then saw that it was like $200 like you say and I was like 'WHAT'.
      From searching this program here on TH-cam though, I noticed someone recommended a program called 'Shotcut' which is actually under a tenner, looks nice and simple and has reverb in the audio effects options. =)
      I've been searching about this for weeks and downloaded something called Voicemeeter, which seems like something where I could have reverb as a filter on my mic, but it is just so complicated and the output sound has some weird clipping sound like a killswitch every second and I have no idea why 🤦‍♀🤷‍♀😂
      Thanks to you though I'm on the right track now =)

    What it's like playing a low F whistle compare to a low d Well I'm struggling with low d and I'm not going back to a recorder I couldn't play analto recorder because I couldn't change back to finger pads, from developing my own version of pipers grip...so i should get one of these in its not too loud to disturb the neighbors with my grade 1 aying

    I really want to start playing but I have no idea where to even begin. I wanted to take up a Low D but I’ve heard it’s easier and more beginner friendly to start with a Low F or A. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

      Hi, and welcome 🤩 My advice would be to pick up a cheap high D whistle (Clarke Sweetone in D). This will make it really easy to follow along with any tutorials you find online. They're really affordable, and a decent whistle to get started with.
      Once you learn the melody on the high D whistle, you can simply switch to ANY other key of whistle, and play the tune on that. You'll just play a lower version, but it sounds really cool 😁
      If you're interested in low whistles, there are some affordable places to start. Check out my reviews for James Dominic whistles. They're plastic whistles, but lightweight and pretty cheap! You could likely pick up a low G and Low D (for the price of one more expensive low whistle) and you'll have lots of options.
      If you find you get on well with tin whistle, and you're enjoying it, you'll know when it's time to upgrade later on. Second hand whistles sell well on eBay or generally online, so you'd have no problem generating a little cash back to upgrade if you needed to ❤️
      I hope that's helpful. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you need. I'm always happy to help. x

    I also bought one cost me a fortune to bring it into Ireland. The one problem i get is clogging, do you find your cloggs too? And what do you do about it if so? I have a mop that i have to use a lot on that whistle. Would oiling help i wonder?

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't noticed, but I haven't played it for long periods yet. I recommend perhaps waxed dental floss very gently in the mouthpiece. You need to be very careful with wooden whistles though, easy to damage if you mess them around too much. There are some tips on the video below, but I'm not sure many are really suitable for wooden instruments.

      thanks for the tip . Yes i did mess with the little iVolga C one put oil inside which clogged it terribly until it dried out again but it kind of plays better now but it took a lot of perseverance and blowing and mopping to get it to play again. I do love the sound of them though very unique , the c is really sweet and i play it mostly now tbh. Wish there was retailers here in Ireland as the import duty is insane a top the price of the whistle plus postage. @@CutiepieTinWhistle

      I have the exact same issues with clogging and the import duty for Austria was 52 euros 🙈
      However, the sound is awesome and I absolutely love it. ❤
      Did you get the clogging under control in the meantime? Anything you can recommend?

    • @markc1234golf
      @markc1234golf ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i have oiled her from the inside, you don't know how long they are in storage, i used a rag soaked in olive oil pulled through. Mine also had the added problem that the top and bottom didn't stay together so i added plumbing tape to create a proper seal, then used dental tape and pulled it through the mouthpiece several coats were necessary . She is now playing a lot better. I googled and the wooden flutes actually need breaking in sometimes , so i figured the whistles may have the same problem. The little C one i bought was the same and again i used the oil gave her a good soak, needs drying in afterwards , might take a few days, but she now sounds super sweet and i absolutely love playing these. I find the weight is just perfect, the holes on the low f not too far spaced and they are so easy to play. I absolutely love the back pressure i get though many more notes with these than with whistles with less pressure tbh. And yes they sound really nice. Keep persevering. I just made it my mission to play both every day and just doggedly not quit. They get better with use. Hope this helps you. @@weterletzen

      that import duty is heavy by God, i looked them up on the russian website they only cost 68 euros there. I send an email have not heard back. Recently ordered a Karavaev whistle from russia was brilliant for a low Eb only paid 80 euros with shipping and it arrived reasonably quickly. They do make nice instruments the Russians. But i do think we are getting slightly ripped off by the sellers here. To charge for that whistle 130 when they sell for less than half is a bit outrageous i think. I would love a low G from them too. @@weterletzen
