The biggest problem for lefties that you didn't point out is that we can almost never try out the nice high-end basses we want in their lefty versions. They're almost always special order, AND final sale, so you have to commit before you even hear what they sound and feel like.

Fender should do a special limited run each year of lefty basses in colours that are not usually available. I'm sure they could afford to do that and those basses would definitely sell straight away

Thank you Johnny for this video.
Being left handed, the first bass I bought 30 years ago was … right handed Fender Precision special for obvious reasons. But for the life of it my right hand was unable to stay in rhythm…
This said I know play left handed and have 4 basses:
    - Chevy P (modified to PJ fretless
    - Rickenbacker 4003
    - Bachmusic 51 P bass
    - Sterling Ray 34

Thanks for the video from us lefties! After years of being a bass player and lot of struggles on finding instruments i have come to buy only second hands models,i own an Ibanez Musician,a Tokai Jazz bass,a Bacchus Jazz bass, and even a Yamaha BB1100S,but my preference goes to a brand that stopped in the early 2000! I own four Bass Collection SB series build by SGC Nanyo in Japan and they are awesome and affordable! Fell in love with the brand in 1995 when i bought my first one i still have today!

Thanks for the left handed love Jonny, we don't get a lot of it from our righty friends usually ;-) And as a lefty player that has looked over this kinda thing for years I think you've made a very accurate list of the current market. Ibanez use to be pretty kind to us lefties but they've scaled right back on their offerings, and Sire have undoubtedly the biggest range currently. I have a Fender Player P-Bass that I love, but I need a jazz in my collection and am strongly leaning towards the Sire's for this.

I’m naturally ambidextrous and it comes in very handy. Growing up I had half left handed people around me and half right handed. So when I learn stuff I’ve always followed what someone is doing so from a young age I’ve always learned things both ways. Fast forward to starting guitar I knew and fully intended on playing both ways. Started out on the right handed guitar and a month into playing I strung an extra acoustic I had left handed. Now I have half lefties and half righties and I’ve been playing for off and on 12 years.
Testing guitars and basses being ambidextrous comes in so handy. Because you can get an idea of what the guitar will feel and sound like regardless of which configuration you’re shopping for. Often times when I’m shopping for a lefty if I see one I like I’ll try out the right handed counterpart at a guitar store

Thanks so much for the lefty love. I often have to walk into a music store and flip basses over to play them. I’ve gotten a lot of looks and questions for playing a bass with the strings reversed. One other brand to consider is Kiesel/Carvin. They are custom order direct to consumer. The options you can choose are endless. They do not charge extra for the lefty option either. But like sandberg an affordable one is around 1200-1400USD.

Thanks for that Jonny! Currently rocking a beloved Ibanez SR but the itch to expand the collection is real! Although there aren't many colour or model options (as usual for us lefties), the SR series is delicious to play. Buttery neck that is superfast and comfortable to play, sleek design and well-built body...
Danelectro and Airline (Eastwood) also have left handed basses btw!

Thanks for the video mate good to see someone remembered we are out there also! There probably are a couple of issues in actually purchasing some of these though, so whilst they are available technically - you’ll be hard pressed to try one, not be charged more or not have a long wait time for the instrument.
One genuine thing that irritates me, is the offering of black/white/Sunburst basses in every range. Occasionally you find an interesting colour, but typically you’re limited to these options - even if the full range has amazing colours, for some reason they don’t paint lefties that way.
There are bigger problems in the world sure, but it’s a real shame to see some companies
shrinking what they do offer as we move forward.

The biggest problem for left handers is right handers. We left handers are well aware and accept easily that the world is both handed. Not so with right handers only. They are oblivious that we even exist and are surprised when we show up with our left handed instrument and get very confused when pairing up with us. Let’s face if folks… left handers are more unique and visually creative and right handers are plodders. I’ve made millions hiring left handers to create and right handers to assemble. There are millions of them.

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning colour range. So many manufacturers have all these wacky and wild colour choices for their instruments ... and then their left-handed models seem to only ever be sunburst brown. Why is it always sunburst brown? I don't want to play a brown bass.

Funny how when the bass is played in the “left handed direction” it’s called a “lefty”. I write, throw a ball with my right, and so I’m labeled a “righty”. Hmmmm. So why do I play in the “left handed direction”? Because my right hand is stronger… and when I do Barr chords on a guitar, I can hold them for much longer than when I try to play guitar in the “right handed direction”. Sure, it did take some time to train my left hand to pick as fast as my right hand can go (still working on it). But I’m getting dare!
Great Video Jonny! And yes Sandberg’s are expensive… and ugh I did have to wait a year (to the day I ordered it) to get it, but I love my TM-4! Oh and I just found out that Fender is coming out with a “left handed” active version of their Player Plus Precision bass. There might be some hope yet for us “lefty’s?” LOL

  • @PeekaPeep

KNEW ESP and Schecter would be firmly locked into the Top 3 part of your list! Those two companies could seriously teach Gibson, Yamaha, and especially Fender a few things about how to effectively keep the southpaw community in the loop. Really ticked at Fender for pretty much dismissing their entire LH customer base in recent years, which is why I'll never EVER give them the time of day for as long as they remain in business🖕. Same goes for Gibson, though they get somewhat of a pass for having the unexpected "foresight" to make a good deal of their RH guitars/basses double-cutaways so lefties can adapt a bit more quickly on them (only valid reason why I just might hold on to my recently-inherited 1974 EB-3L soon as I get it fully upgraded with high-end components).
Other brands that should've been on that list are G&L (the REAL Fender brand these days, least they don't dwell incessantly on past glory compared to their now completely out-of-touch big-name predecessor 😉) and the small yet intriguing LA-based AIO (All In One), which has a surprisingly diverse and affordable array of 4, 5, 6, even 7-string basses along with fretless options that can even give the likes of Warwick a legit run for their money.
