The mirror is so the teacher can see what her students are doing. You would need some exceptional (perhaps inhuman?) powers to perceive what all the students were doing! You could face them and so reverse movements (i.e. swap left for right), but this can be confusing for students. When you do your own practice, yes, then it is better to do without a mirror so you develop your own spacial awareness, then in class an experienced teacher can observe you and make corrections where necessary.
