This is a nearly perfect film. The pacing, the tension-release, the casting of Stewart and Kelly is perfect. What I love most though is what you briefly mention at the end, these little insights the film gives of normal life in 1950s american suburbia. There's a sort of "virtual reality" aspect to this film. It's very immersive. By the end of the film you feel like you know what it would have been like to live in this little neighbourhood.

yeah i agree the 50's looked amazing, you should watch dial m for murder and strangers on a train aswell, another two great Hitchcock films

Well done analysis! This is my favorite Hitchcock film. I wrote a thesis on it in undergrad drawing parallels with reality television. It’s such a brilliantly made film. One note I would make about your analysis: Miss Torso isn’t on the phone in that opening sequence, she’s actually fixing her hair in the bathroom mirror.

Nice (short) summary of techniques! Really appreciate it. I've always really liked rear window and vertigo more than the Hitchcock movies with Cary Grant.

Rear Window is a masterpiece. One of Hitchcock's best.

you got it all wrong in the beginning, the movie is not about who did it , it's about whether the person did it or not

Fellini was quite a Hitchcock fan. I never thought about it but that brief scene of pretty young women sunbathing on the roof and the hovering helicopter certainly found its way into the opening sequence of La Dolce Vita. Coincidence?

The narrow door frames, window frames and alleyways are stand-ins for looking through a peephole.

I wouldn't call it a "whodunnit" because the mystery centers solely on whether Thorwald has killed his wife or not.

You're confusing diegetic and non-diegetic sound. You begin by describing the music score, which is not inherent to the film's world, as diegetic sound - it's properly non-diegetic.

If this movie were created nowadays, all its charm & creative warmth would be tossed out. Some of that would be due to too much CGI, a love of reality-TV bluntness (soundstage, bad, on-site location, good!) & various other aspects of today's vibes that affect both culture & politics. That includes violence for violence's sake, woke for woke's sake, sleaze for sleaze's sake.
