    I've been noticing some improvements on your editing skills. The Aero/Climbing bike morphing featured recently was pretty impressive, and the slo-mo split screens featured here are smart and pretty elegant and effective. Chapeau guys.

    At roughly the 3:00 minute mark my LSD kicked in as a tiny rider rode directly at the camera in extreme slow motion while the two dudes discussed technique. Very clever for a visual display of technique but it's really, really disconcerting for some reason...lol. Nice video, guys! :)

    I think this may be one of my favorite segments yet. Great video editing with the Simon and Matt talking, then having Simon or Tom riding on the side. GCN always keeping us entertained.

    Waited until the last ten seconds to talk about the most important thing in Cyclo Cross.
    Deciding when to, and how to, get on and off the bike without slowing
    down too much.
    Kieth Mernickle (champ of yesteryonk) told me this.
    It makes sense really, momentum is
    handy. Saves a lot of energy.
    Cleats and toeclips when I was at it! So much easier now with PB peddles.

      I got a specialized tricross for super cheap. It needed TLC. Lots. It had creaks all over, and needed a tune badly. By watching vids and going to a few websites it runs like an absolute champ and is very quiet.
      The ride: OOOOH lawdy lawd I love this bike. I came with 38c tires at first, and they were cheap, heavy, stiff. Basically everything you DON'T want in a tire, and they were better than fine for blasting 20 miles on the weekends, but more importantly I was able to run through the broken glass in the city.
      I switched to 28c 4 seasons, and they are great in their own way as well. I just did a bunch of commuting and even a bit of some trails where I was sure I would wash out, but I just didn't. The slightly slack geometry did its thing, and I was smashing through the trails of Golden Gate Park at speeds I would never imagine on a pure MTB or a pure road bike. The road bike would be too sketchy, and the MTB too heavy at the same pricepoint. The only bikes that I personaly would be able to ride that fast on the same terrain would be like a cyclocross or gravel bike, or like you said a cross country bike.
      I used to ride mostly single track with a hardtail, and now that those trails are not directly out of my back door the tricross shines. I think it's in this series where they say what I am trying to say, and it was something along the lines of: A cross bike makes a specific type of riding more fun than it would be on a mountain bike, and more fun than it would be on a road bike. To me it's Semi-flat terrain where it is necessary/beneficial to have bigger than 25c tires that a cross bike makes the most sense.
      cross country bikes philosophy as explained by gmbn is that they are designed to be as lightweight as possible to FLY up the hill, and to survive the downhill. Meaning cross country bikes are built for offroad, yeah, but climbing and downhill on rough roads is where they would be more beneficial. What do you really need front or rear suspension for on a flat gravel road?
      For me the cross bike seemed like it was going to be a better fit, and I had the same question. It all came down to what I saw myself doing. I have the finesse and patience to make it down anything with less than say a 2-3 ft. mandatory drop, or stuff that is just way too steep. I also have the physical ability to ride long rides on the road. The only bike that lets me do both decently is the cross style bike. Keep in mind my bike isn't REAALLY a cross bike, and is more of a touring geometry bike marketed toward people like myself. I totally recommend it, and I don't think I would ride a cross country bike half as much living in San Francisco.

      Each type you're considering are the best at their own specialization.

    GCN seems to like top 10 lists, and so here is my top ten want to see in the future:
    1. Flat bars vs. Drop bars: As a daily San Francisco commuter that has discussed this topic among other riders I can tell you some feel safer in traffic with flat bars, and others feel like drop bars make their commute soooo much easier that you may as well just get used to it. I would love to see a video that addresses some of the comfort issues one may have with traffic in general, but also one that talks about bike fit for commuting.
    But dont stop there! No. Might my cyclocross-ish frame benefit from flat bars in certain situations? Why don't you take a look at the benefits of each, and discuss some ways in which each style may compromise to suit specific needs.
    I really just want to see you guys race the mountain bike "boys" again...that's why it's my #1
    2. Long Ride Safety: This is one that I really can't believe hasn't been done yet. What do I bring and how to train for a 50 mile ride was discussed, but what I am talking about is the logistics of going on longer rides more and more often. How can people be smart about the way they plan their rout in case of emergencies? Should they have multiple backup plans?
    I grew up runnin cross country. I have not always been the wisest about letting people know where I was running when I ran 80 miles a week, and I know many of us do the same bicycling. What can we do to be smart about our overall safety on a 50+ mile ride? GPS? Phone apps? breadcrums?
    3. Top ten "Hacks/Bodges": of the month? Year? All time?
    I don't know, but some sort of re-visit scenario may be fun as well. What are those same people coming up with these days?
    4. What retro styles do you guys and the pro peleton miss? Obviously many things get better with the next version, but sometimes we have to face it...the original was just plain better. Other times we may have it in our mind that certain aspects of our sport were better, and we're just getting old and nostalgic. Some aspects were just better for teem moral, sportmanship, and some things may have been better only for the fans, OR only for the riders.
    Next video: What are the things that we can also look back at and say "Good Riddance"?
    5. Ways to win cool stuff from bike companies, race teams, and from GCN. Ya know, like bikes and waterbottles n stuff.

    Hey can you all make a video talking about the general tech of CX. For instance, width of tyres/type of tyres, why a cx bike vs a MTB, disc brakes vs canti brakes. This would help a ton.

    Clear violation of Rule #82 // Close the gap. Whilst riding in cold and/or Rule #9 conditions replete with arm warmers, under no circumstances is there to be any exposed skin between the hems of your kit and the hems of your arm warmers. If this occurs, you either need to wear a kit that fits you properly or increase the size of your guns. Arm warmers may, however, be shoved to the wrists in Five And Dime scenarios, particularly those involving Rule #9 conditions. The No-Gap Principle also applies to knee and leg warmers with the variation that these are under no circumstances to be scrunched down around the ankles; Merckx have mercy on whomever is caught in such a sad, sorry state. It is important to note that while one can wear arm warmers without wearing knee or leg warmers, one cannot wear knee or leg warmers without wearing arm warmers (or a long sleeve jersey). It is completely inappropriate to have uncovered arms, while covering the knees, with the exception of brief periods of time when the arm warmers may be shoved to the wrists while going uphill in a Five And Dime situation. If the weather changes and one must remove a layer, the knee/leg coverings must go before the arm coverings. If that means that said rider must take off his knee or leg warmers while racing, then this is a skill he must be accomplished in. The single exception would be before an event in which someone plans on wearing neither arm or leg warmers while racing, but would like to keep the legs warm before the event starts; though wearing a long sleeve jersey over the racing kit at this time is also advised. One must not forget to remove said leg warmers. 16

    Atm I'm doing cyclo cross on my mtb with cx tyres on it I have done two races both were enjoyable but it was hard on an mtb I'm getting a cx bike now though hopefully a big improvement

    I run over 100 psi on my hybrid (looking to get shot of the thing ASAP for a cyclocross).
    I like my bike to feel as much like my car as possible... stiff and a slight touch of oversteer.

    I have a Specialized Sirrus pro 08' and enjoy riding on the road. I am now considering a new bike and I've always said that my next bike should be a road bike although I am very concerned about the dreadful conditions of our british roads. Last week someone suggested I consider the the Tricross bikes. I should like to know peoples opinions of these bikes when being used mainly for road use... or should I just go for the normal road bike and hope our roads improve??

    Looking at the trials i would think a nice 29er hardtail XC bike with 2 inch tubeless tires would be much faster. You gain 3kg in bike weight but you could grip up the hills, grip in the corners and fly down the hills(due to faster braking).

    1:28 - If I ran 25psi in my tires, I'd end up with a double pinch flat the first time I hopped the bike over a twig. I'd probably manage to double pinch flat tubeless even.

      I was wondering the same thing, and I suggested they do a video on drop bars vs. flat bars. They already did a video on the dropper post for on road descents, and I suspect they're just too heavy for cross. When dropper posts are incorporated into the frame by the manufacture then they will be light enough to make sense, because pros have to add a little weight to their bikes still sometimes. Also reliability...imagine having your dropper post stuck all the way down on the first lap of a hour race. ugh. They haven't been around long enough yet. give it time.

      Because drop bars give the rider the most aerodynamic position and a dropper post is only useful for mountainbike trails.
      On dirt and gravel roads or trails where you don't need any type of suspension, a CX bike will always be faster than an XC mountainbike.

      markcocjin dropper posts are certainly NOT only useful on mountain bike trails. That's silly. Not useful ENOUGH, maybe. Probably.
      The common consensus from what I understand is that in cross some want their seat just a little lower, so I was wondering why we don't see them. Too heavy? Too New? I'm not talkin a 3+ in drop here. Just a little bit.

    Would that trek Crockett be good as a road bike too trying to justify buying 1

      A lot of us use a cross bike as our year round bike, and the Crockett would fall in to that category for us too. Switch out the tyres for slicks and it will be good and fast for commuting for example.

      Global Cycling Network Is a CX bike versatile enough to use it for ~150km road rides after switching the tyres to slicks? Or would it only be good as a commuter over relatively short distances? Great channel by the way!

      Maciej Piekarski There is a group of riders in our area that regularly ride 120+ km on their CX bikes in the spring/fall; no need for slicks either, just file-tread tires if you'll mostly be on gravel/tarmac (hell some run Clement PDX mud-tires all year.) I've done numerous 80-100km rides on my CX bike and absolutely love it. I find it less tiring than my road bike because of the wider and more cushy tires, which smooth out the crap roads around here.
      As for speed, we have a local pro rider, Adam Morka, and I've seen him post Strava rides where he has averaged 29-30km/h with his Trek Boone - and that's with 800m+ of climbing, gravel side roads, and regular CX tires. So yeah, CX bikes can be very quick. Put slicks and narrower tires on a CX bike and it'll basically be a road bike with slightly poorer aerodynamics (due to the generally beefier fork/frame.)
      With regards to the Crockett, check out the new Boone; seems like an awesome CX bike. I just bought a new Norco Threshold and couldn't be happier - I love it!

    I use a CX for commuting, how many PSI is "best" ? :) Mostly riding on the road.

    Why so little psi ? Isn't it easier to get flats that way?

      They run low psi for traction. Pinch flats aren't an issue because most serious CX riders run tubular tires.

      plus, xc tires are much wide 32mm or more. The wider the tire the lower you can run your pressure without increasing the chance of getting pinch flats.

      William Lue or tubeless... :) (Though most racers seem to prefer tubular.)

    If you only ever ride on the road, I encourage you to turn off down a dirt path or gravel road. You'll find beautiful places and fun, challenging riding. You'd be amazed at what a road bike can ride over.

      and if you ever want to be idiotic like me, do that on 23mm at like 120psi on a 1x setup of 52 x 11-34 :D you'll be rattling like an idiot all the way through

    For road, fine gravel and relatively flat forest roads this kind of bike looks perfekt. but to be honest: for mainly forest riding i still would prefer a mountainbike. this cx bikes look to shaky and uncomfortable when you have roots, stones, mud grooves and rough gravel. i always would think i will destroy my wheels if i go over roots and i get punches from the handlebar

      They're functionally the same. It's only the usage that defines them really. You can just put on specialized tires for your needs.
