Sorry to hear this. I met Dirk about 18 years ago. He was a super nice guy to us and told me some really interesting stories about the A-Team. The reason he didn't show up, could have been anything. Too bad you didn't get to see him.
I met Dirk at a convention about 15 years ago. He was really pushing his autobiography. I was a bit strapped for cash at the time and could'nt afford to get it. This changed his attitude towards me. I put out my hand to shake his but he snubbed me. Look, people are human, maybe Dirk was having a bad day; but it did sting a bit seeing that Starbuck is my favorite character. I guess it is like the old saying, "you should never meet your heroes". I did meet Richard Hatch that day and he was great.
I was *REALLY* surprised by how nice Richard Hatch was. I had always heard he was a jerk, he was hard to work with, tended to sabotage promotions, etc, and, hey, maybe that was true once upon a time, but he was on the short list of best experiences with celebs at cons. He was extremely friendly, he was giving stuff away free, didn’t charge for pictures and autographs, was talking to everyone, and seemed genuinely interested in what everyone had to say.
They probably stiffed him on his guarantee. When a con screws the talent over their only real choice is to walk. I've seen it happen a few times. Usually they'll stick around for people to catch up with them on the floor to make up for it a bit. Dirk's not big on social media so he wouldn't have a way to let people know. I helped with Galacticon 2013 and you wouldn't believe the mess. Some of the actors weren't even told where their tables were or where to set up. Others weren't told they were expected to take part in certain panels so they just sat at their booth unaware people were lined up to see them. I hope you get a chance to meet Dirk man. He's super cool. A few of us caught up with him at the hotel after and he sat with us for four hours smoking cigars and telling stories. A few months later I got his autograph at the Hollywood collectibles show and he was great again. Really nice guy. Sorry you got the shaft on this one. :/ Don't be quick to assume it was Dirk's fault though. There's a lot of ways this can go wrong. Then the con just throws his banner up to lay the blame on him. You should hear what happened for the next Galacticon! They cancelled all the re-imagined actors the day before the event because they couldn't pay their guarantees. Some of them were already in town on their own dime. Aaron Douglas went to a local bar and told fans they could come meet him there.
I have met him several times he was always gracious and nice to the fans. I remember one con he and Herbert Jefferson had tables next to each other and they had the people inline cracking up.
@@battlestarcollectica7106it's usually between the agent and the convention. Sometimes the convention pays the guest a fee and accommodations plus whatever they collect for autographs and pictures. Other times, the convention guarantees a minimum amount for autographs with the con paying the difference if it's not met. I have seen local businesses provide the guarantee as a sponsor.
@@battlestarcollectica7106 Hopefully somebody who knows more will chime in, but I heard a convention organizer discuss a little bit of the business on a podcast. He said (like the original poster above) that the actors are given a guaranteed minimum, and then they can hopefully sell over that minimum. I don't know exactly what that means, but I suspect it means something like "We will pay you $5000 and cover your travel and hotel, and you then pay us a percentage of anything you sell above that." So they get their $5K and then when they sell $1000 of photos, they pay the operator a percentage.
I went to Galacticon 2013 and yeah, it was a total mess. I got the official schedule when I checked in, and then discovered that many of the events were in different rooms entirely. I showed up for one talk and the room was empty and wandered the halls until I found out where it was actually being held. Soon after I arrived I went to one room and Bear McCreary was playing the piano and talking to fans. I missed most of that event, but when I looked at the program I could not find it anywhere, and yet a bunch of people clearly knew about it. Whenever I complained to Galacticon staff, they said that they were screwed over by Comicpalooza, which was happening at the same time. I still managed to have a good time, but it was incredibly disorganized.
I met Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict at my first DragonCon in 2009. Richard Hatch was amazingly friendly and gracious. I was in line for Dirk for 40 minutes while he hit on the woman in front of me.
Sam Jones! He'll save every one of us! And you got Starbucked by Dirk! Last convention I went to I only got to meet Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Marvel comics when they were publishing the Battlestar Galactica comics. No one was at his table as nearly every one at the convention was in line to see Jonathan Frakes. Jim told me stories and showed me documents and art for about half an hour and answered every question I could think up on the spot. I was never able to meet Frakes as the the lines were just impossibly long, but Jim has always been my favorite head honcho at Marvel, so it was a blessing in disguise. I hope you feel the same way about meeting Sam!

The truth was that the check bounced and the convention couldn't honor it. Don't make promises you can't keep.
