Technically brilliant yet appropriately princely. He’s perfection. His artistry extends into the character he’s portraying - every time. Compare this sustained regality with his mischievous brilliance in the beer dance in Don Quixote.
I have seen some of the more recent danseurs doing this variation. Baryshnikov is still the standard. The ballon, the precision of movement, the use of the music, sorry boys, he still owns it.
I like Baryshnikov's take on the Sergeyev variation very much. He axed that one lone pirouette between the last tour and the beginning of the manege, all for the better. That pirouette is in most cases either out of sync with the music or rushed. And replacing the double cabrioles with singles is more in tune with the noble style of the role. After all, it's not Don Quixote. It's meant to be grand, graceful and energetic in an understated and effortless way. After seeing the Petipa original, I like this one even more. The notated variation is very much in the Bluebird style, and the ballet doesn't need a second Bluebird masquerading as Desiré. It needs a Prince. It got him.
What happens is that he has a huge elevation AND FORWARD momentum. AND he keeps his body straight, not in an angle, like most other danseurs do. So, he is literally UP there, with a perfect straight body line, moving FORWARD.
Bello Misha!!!
I've watched a number of different you tube videos of this variation and this version by Misha is definitely my favourite! Why is it that there are so few clear videos of Misha dancing during his peak? He described as one of the best dancers, but all the videos are fuzzy and murky.
Maybe because mediocrity wants no competition, the same story is with my pother favorite dancer, Nikolai Tsiskaridze who by the way was also an amazing Prince Desire
Comparing Misha's version of this variation to those of Soloviev and Nureyev, I think he's much better. Soloviev, as usual, is amazing, but kind of mechanical and his lack of flexibility really shows in the manege. And Rudi, who put so much passion into this variation (even after he could no longer dance it on a technical level) was just too sloppy (especially in his National Ballet of Canada version). Mischa has an elegance, easy classicism and softness neither of the others have along with that amazing ballon.

SUBLIME !!! The best dancer of all times.
Yes! He's!!!
And so say all of us!

His phrasing is just unbeatable. Those heart stopping barrel turns just follow the music perfectly. They soar with the music.
amazing technique! he's like flying in slow motion!!!
Extremely beautiful and absolutely fascinating !! Genius.
Thank you Misha for the great pleasure!
Pure Beauty and perfection. No other male dancer like him.
Still Unique.

Is it just me, or does he seem to just hover; just float in the air at 0:08? He's amazing :)

A priceless gift to mankind.Thank you.
As always in a league of his own.
He has the ability to make look easy very difficult dance steps👏👑⭐❤😘
Time seems to slow down for him when he's in the air...
Gravity is such a waste of time if you're Baryshnikov.
MAGNIFICO👏👏👏👏👏🇮🇹👏👏👏
Hermoso baile.Hermoso Misha!
Amazing! What passion and grace....Lovely
He is Such a joy to Watch !! The greatest !
Fantastic!
Omg what perfection, bravo bravo bravo 👏👏👏

Salvaje. Único, insuperable
My two favorite performers of Prince Desire, Baryshnikov and Tsiskaridze.
At 0:46 you can see the lines that hold him up in the air.
🤣🤣
Gravity goes away!!!!!
He gives me chills

Ceru_lean I would guess that the lack of clear videos is related to the camera quality in the early 80’s...
Yes, it is strange. Nureyev was earlier, but many of his videos are superior in clarity to Baryshnikov's.
I wonder if we can get Misha to buy up copyright to some of these.?
Mu favorito!!
He must be dancing on the moon or something :P
Baryshnikov is simply one of if not the most amazing dancer. I am a male ballet dancer myself. Or as the correct word would be danceur
Danceur is not a word
thank you
Es gran Bailrín,Baryshnicov.

Totally agree!
You are not just a clown you are the entire circus
I get what your saying
I've had dreams where I can leap in the air and hover like that. Only in my dreams.
gravity on [off]
Can I like, have his cabrioles?
Why bother with gravity ?
His double tours...! Pffffffff...!
💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
@evealicelucienne EXACTLY!
yes he does
isto e que e ballet
...and this isn't even one of his best performances
Very good but not as good as Nureyev in the 60's who was absolutly stunning.
His mom beve
At least in this one, David Hallberg beats them all.
No he doesn't, he is cold like a cucumber.
