Nothing changes when you specifically Game Over while fighting Ganon, it's just the same Game Over screen as any other part of the game. Does Game Overing in other parts of the game create different timelines? If I Game Over in the Lost Woods before I get a sword does that create the CDi games timeline??

After 999 Deaths Majoras Mask begins
There's a similar thing where the counter stops in Pokémon Sword and Shield, discovered it when shiny hunting Golurk that it just stops at 999. Even the games like "Dude stop!"

I’d assume for content, when I was little though, my file had about 150 deaths before I 100% my file and then beat the game

tbh I expected it to roll over to 0, or if not that then to give a strange and random figure. It staying at 999 would've seemed to me the least likely result. It feels like this might indicate that they programmed it to do this on purpose for some reason, because it feels like this sort of thing most often causes an overflow in most games

@@100PercentZelda Maybe if you died _enough_ times it would cause the figure to get weird, maybe it is still tracking deaths beyond 999 and it eventually _will_ overflow

thats commonly what the game does in other circumstances when there's no way of displaying it, like if you get 1000 gold skultullas then it uses random garbage instead of numbers to display

For 22 years i never knew what that number counter was. Now i know its a death counter. Ive wondered my whole life, after i beat the game several times i was sad the number never went up, but knowing this makes me feel good about it never increasing.

I don't know I was expecting a overflow error but I guess we got to get up to like the 16-bit integer limit

Well to be fair on the developers part, you'd have to be extremely incompetent to die a thousand times unless it was on purpose. Heck, I don't even think extremely incompetent would even get close to that many deaths.
I think someone told me they got to 200 without doing it on purpose.. 😄

I’ve played this game countless times and I never knew that was a death counter
This is my favorite game of all time and have played through it at least 5 times in my life and never noticed that thing. If I did, I have forgotten. I feel like a bad person for no apparent reason.
I didn't know right away until my bro told me what it was. So, first playthrough, I only died once. It was somewhere between Jabu-Jabu and Water Temple.
