Also, the vast majority of us don’t need massive colorful palettes. I just want stuff that I can wear everyday that has good quality. The small quads of fun colors that can supplement a “boring” collection has been a useful trend for me.
@@Gyaradosage Really no one needs those big ass colorful palettes. I'm a big colorful shadow gal and I think 12 pan is probably my max. It needs a concise color story, I don't need 40 purples.
I’m like an in between with being a makeup lover and a makeup user. I do love bright colours and extra looks and I do wear them on the daily. But I also don’t want a massive collection where I can’t use it all, I like to buy things I truly love. I’ve decided to just buy cheap/reasonably priced palettes (revolution, bh cosmetics, maybe the little nabla palettes) and then if I spend more money it will be on indie brands since I understand their costs are higher and not just massively inflated for the name like luxury makeup brands
I actually think the disconnect exists between makeup users on social media and the everyday makeup wearer and I actually think mainstream media is more in line with the everyday makeup wearer. Outside of social media, most people have the basics and don’t have extravagant collections like social media has led us to believe. I may be wrong, but this is what I’ve found from those around me that don’t consume makeup content on social media
True! When I saw this I had to take a split second to ask myself what month it is... Are we really halfway through the year... Listical makers, don't do me like this!
*cue literal answer you weren’t asking for* - It’s because people who are shopping/researching for new palettes will likely type in “best makeup palette 2021” or something of the sort! I do it all the time 😂 so they write these articles and then just create updated versions throughout the year so they always have an up-to-date shopping guide and can keep their site at the top of the search engine results 🙃
Girl yes! I feel brands like Colourpop who come up with products every week or two make makeup feel so boring and oversaturated. I don't get excited for anything anymore new launches come out and It just feels meh.
@@jayyyyynickiiiii Agreed! ABH did Jackie so dirty with the launch and quick new product release... it’s one of the most amazing ABH palettes out there. Personally, I like it more than my Modern Renaissance. The shades are gorgeous, easily blendable, excellently formulated, and are perfect for all skin tones and shades. The shimmer shades are the stuff of my dreams.
Agreed, it’s wild that people mention all these boring palettes as the best but sleep on Jackie Aina x ABH. the colors in that palette are stunning jewel tones and every single color packed pigment, blended well, and flattered my pale face and shows up beautifully on deep skin. it was an actually versatile palette with the right amount of neutral/work appropriate colors, but many gorgeous fun colors to set it apart. they didn’t do that basic tired all neutrals with one pop of color thing. very under appreciated. ABH screwed up, this should be the favorite youtubers gush about, not Norvina 1 2 3 4 :/
Not gonna lie as someone who isn't that involved with the beauty world living in the netherlands where make up isnt that big i fully understand why the wild west pallet is there, for me it looks really good, you have your neutral shades and a pop of color and from what I've seen you can create quite a view looks with it,
The Naked Wild West palette is indeed really pushed in the Netherlands. I even got an email when it was released from ICI Paris XL. It's absolutely not revolutionary but for people who only wear neutrals, it's a good way to try something different while not going out of their comfort zone.
I remember when the Wild West palette released at my store, everyone was losing it over it. I genuinely believe most makeup lovers already have those shades and more. But what I noticed is that people who love it do because they see the neutrals and they love neutrals and then see the blues and think “oh I can play with this” so for the average consumer, it is a fun palette.
The ud Wild West palette gets released in 2 days here in Australia 🇦🇺 - the day before Easter. I’ve been waiting since watching all the youtubers review it. Our Sephora in Australia does not stock Urban Decay and the Sephora in USA doesn’t ship to Australia unfortunately 🤪
This is me. I am the average make up user hahah I also just had to get rid of a pallet for it being so old. Like way too old and I never buy stuff unless I need it so I NEED those neutrals again. It was perfect timing for me. I can see why it's less interesting for say collectors or people who have multiple pallets
I just got into makeup and for me it seemed like the perfect palette for me. Neutrals (which I didn't have since I didn't own any makeup), some nice shimmers and a pop of colour. I felt like the teal would work well with one of my lipsticks. (The other palette I got is a kind of rainbow palette - but in a lower price range)
I think you're confusing "hyped makeup on TH-cam" with their market. Makeup on TH-cam is very different to the target audience they have. They sell makeup to the everyday woman where a teal is wild and crazy. The honey palette from UD is wild and a little bit much. Reading comments under trendmood wouldn't help them much because people there would ask for more rainbow palettes. But that's not what the majority of people want. Hope you understand my point 😊❤️
I think this is why skincare is overtaking makeup now. Makeup used to be so cool and exciting and now it isn't anymore. Plus I think cos of the pandemic, people don't want to look all dolled up anymore, and prefer a natural vibe.
You're not alone. That said, the way I have tried to inspire myself, and what I have found myself more interested in, is my single eyeshadows. I've found myself really interested in creating my own color stories. And I've been more interested in finding unique shades that I don't have, or staple shades that I know I'll use a lot. I also found really affordable magnetic palettes from shopmissa and I've really been enjoying myself
I never thought I would have gotten to the point where I wasn’t excited about new makeup....It’s so uninspiring The no makeup-makeup/ minimal makeup trend has been the only helped with that because it feels more new than all the boring stuff that’s been coming out for years
I honestly feel that Europe or at least Italy is not that into eyeshadow palettes, it's more of an American thing. All of the people who wear make up that I know (and do not work at a store that sells make up) only wear eyeliner on the daily and put on eyeshadow only in special occasions, and even then it's just one neutral colour or two.
100% - I feel like (big) palettes have gotten more popular recently but for a long time, single eyeshadows, duos or quads were the go to here (Germany). People curated their own "palettes" by depanning singles instead of buying actual ones, I remember watching a lot of those videos in ~2013-16
Even the vogue one seems a bit off because most professional working artists will have professional products in their kits rather than cheap trendy makeup.
Exactly! Or the artists will be like the global beauty director or some kind of affiliate of a major brand (which is why I love a lot of Byrdie articles because they’ll oftentimes put little disclaimers saying like “so and so is the beauty director or brand makeup artist for such and such brand” and I love that Hannah made that point about the Haus Labs palette and Lady Gaga’s makeup artist-that happens WAAY more often than we’d even think, like I swear I’ll watch those insider favorites videos and it’ll be a low key ad of any products or brands either started by or affiliated with their clients.
TH-cam is a microscopic section of the makeup market!! My best friend works for a big makeup brand & her description of the TH-cam market share is “a single ant in the ant hill!”
here is my two cents about Urban Decay: I'm in Turkey and we don't have access to indie brands and colorpop etc. Turkey's export policy does not allow to bring in cosmetics from foreign websites. Therefore, we have drugstore brands like loreal maybelline makeup revolution nyx etc and we have sephora stores which only carries well established brands, eg not rare beauty, not artist couture, not kaja, not lunar beauty etc. If you want to buy higher quality eyeshadow palletes, abh, urban decay and huda beauty are at the top. Because you know, chanel armani benefit becca etc do not have many eyeshows. Nars, too faced, bobbi brown have some decent ones, but not as popular. It makes me very jealous to see american influencers comparing everything with colorpop 😂😂 I WISH we had access to it.
I didn't know it was a policy in Turkey that they couldn't bring in cosmetics from foreign websites! I thought Colourpop just didn't ship to Turkey. Can people send you things in a package that's not from the website?
I actually think this is what some people like about it. When I give my mom ultra-pigmented palette's she's so annoyed she has to spend so much time blending. While i love pigment, i think some people find unpigmented palettes easier to work with.
In Brazil, imported makeup is extremely expensive. A palette can cost around R$ 150 to R$ 500 (the minimum wage here is R$ 1100 for comparison). Because of this, people tend to think that, because these brands are expensive, they are automatically good. We don't have all the brands you mentioned here, but Urban Decay, for example, is very popular, as are Nars, Benefit, KVD beauty and Mac. However, today we have wonderful brazilian brands like Bruna Tavares, Vizzela, Oceane, Dailus and Ruby Rose (which is very popular for their palettes). It would be really cool if you reacted to products from other countries in a video!
@@em84c I know, right?? Sadly, social inequality is still very strong here. Rent can cost around R$400 to R$2500 where I live. For an apartment, you won't pay less than R$700 (monthly). For food, I'm pretty sure a couple spends around R$100 weekly. In bigger cities, the prices can go even higher... However, we do have some advantages like free health care by SUS and great public universities which we don’t have to pay for!
Hi Alana, I lived in Brazil for a while pre-pandemic and I was always curious about brands there but I never bought anything unfortunately. Is Quem disse berenice very big? I remember there bei being a store full of that makeup at the mall near my apartment where I lived and I always wondered if it was good because Pabllo Vittar used one of their liquid lipsticks in her music videos
I wish makeup companies would stop coming out with so many new products (*ahem* colourpop) and make it a rare occurrence for a new launch. Give products a chance to become staples and iconic like they did back in 2014..
Those lists that are identical could possibly be attributed to native advertising which is articles that are actually advertisements despite the fact they look like genuine articles
Or people just copying the vogue list (or someone else's list) to avoid doing research and just making money off affiliate links No hate though. I hate my job and think I should start doing stuff like this.
It’s much more common than you realize. Lots of companies are doing it because people don’t want to pay for articles and the banner ads on the side don’t work or pay very well so they get more creative on how to make money. Buzzfeed is actually the worst offender last I saw but it’s been a while since I paid attention to them
That’s a good point! I also think a lot of brands are “in” with a lot of the big women’s publications and it happens to be where a lot of the same big beauty brands send them products and because they’ve got the biggest budget they’ve automatically then got the biggest reach. Also, I feel like sometimes these beauty publications will have a bias toward like a specific person or brand based on their relationship to the publication, like Allure will recommend Flesh beauty a lot because the founder used to be either the editor in chief or like one of the big beauty editors there for years and Who What Wear will recommend Merit and Versed a lot because Catherine Power I think was one of the founders either of click brands which is like a sort of parent company for some online beauty/fashion/lifestyle sites or she was one of the founders of Who What Wear itself, as for Versed I feel like that was a brand that was either started by someone who worked at who what wear or if I’m not mistaken is actually, technically “their” brand. It’s just interesting to look at these kinds of things and to also see some similarities, not just the obvious differences, between mainstream traditional beauty media and mainstream popular beauty gurus, like how the same exact brands are sending the same exact TH-camrs PR or doing the same IG sponsorships is really similar to when the same exact brands would invite the same exact publications/media outlets to openings, more insider-y type launch parties or luncheons, and stock their beauty closets with PR samples. That’s why I think a lot of people like myself really gravitate not just toward more micro influencers on TH-cam, but also more personal, I guess you could say micro beauty blogs and more under the radar or niche media sites because it feels obviously more relatable, but also like you’re actually hearing about more organic recommendations of things they’ve stumbled upon or their very genuine and in-depth reviews of overly hyped products. I feel like that helps cut through so much of the noise, if you will, in the industry because you’re getting a much more personal recommendation rather than a curated list of products from the top brands with the biggest marketing budgets. (Sorry, I know this is SUUUUPER long, but I appreciated your comment and how both it and Hannah’s video really got me thinking about these things)
i never understand the "best of" articles that come out early in the year! it's not actually about whats coming in the rest of the year its old stuff!! so inconsequential but still annoying😂
hey Hannah, in your last video you mispronounced Waikiki, it's actually said like Why-Key-Key. I appreciate and care for you too much to let you go around saying it wrong, I've lived in Hawaii and my husband is from there so Hawaiian language is used in my house daily so when I hear it said wrong it catches my attention hard. Fun fact Ukelele is said wrong by 99% of people, it's OOK-KUH-LAY-LAY not YOO-KUH-LAY-LEE. Ps. Loving all your videos the last few 2 months that I've been subscribed, I've been binge watching your channel and it's been fun. 💜💜
ok so hawaiian pronunciations are closer to my native language. noice. though, i think the average english speaker wont understand my pronunciation even if i do it right??? which is a bummer
Re: the ASOS link in the last list: I assume it’s a UK website since the prices are listed in pounds. I’m pretty sure from watching some UK youtubers that they don’t have Sephora or Ulta in the UK, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to link to a site that their local audience can’t purchase from. Can anybody in the UK confirm? (I’m in the US.)
I’m from the U.K. and the links for the Hello article are all places I would shop for and buy makeup. Wild West palette is not popping over here from my experience but U.K. TH-camrs do seem to like the new foundation. Tempted.
I'm from UK we don't have Sephora and Ulta, we have boots and superdrug as high street drug stores but Hello is a more upmarket magazine so that is probably why they went with Asos over either of those stores.
That's true. If someone from the UK wants to shop at Sephora, they will get redirected to the French website. And due to GDPR, we cannot even access the US site unless using a VPN. Asos is very popular overall and with the younger audience so using them makes sense. Other mainstream options would be Boots, Superdrug, SpaceNK, Cult Beauty, FeelUnique, Look Fantastic, etc. Or John Lewis because they have beauty section offerings.
In the ELF palette, that’s not a silver it’s an iridescent light shimmer foam type green with a shift, it’s a gorgeous little palette actually, I liked that and the mint green shadow stick, but their shimmer shadow sticks were disappointing
@@FLdancer00 it did come out before hand and around me was mostly sold out before St Patrick’s Day, the makeup stuff was overall great but disappointed they extended the mint stuff into skincare, all that menthol on my skin? NOPE. I need to watch Juicy Jas video now
@@sjworrier0613 Ok, that's what I thought, I remember seeing it in stores too, though most was sold out. JuicyJas's video is pretty good, I like the eye look she comes up with. Yeah the skincare is a no for me too. Maybe I'm bougie but I always feel like if I use anything from them I'll end up breaking out.
As someone from the UK, hello is a UK magazine company. American Sephora is unavailable to everyone in the UK and Ireland so they linked ASOS because it's a international website which stocks some beauty brands
Honestly speaking, as of late, I've been more into the K-Beauty space bc they aren't releasing as much stuff as rapidly as the Western beauty world has been doing over last couple of years. I like how the K-Beauty space has maintained itself despite the makeup boom. It has definitely become saturated but not as crazily as the Western side. Plus Idk, I like how they are staying so unapologetically themselves even with all the attention on them in recent years.
I love K-Beauty products and style more, and the emphasis on skincare and a look thats more minimal sometimes but can be even more editorial, looks on kpop idols even the guys lately like ex: Stray Kids makeup have looked really cool. I just got into a few of their songs.
@@pagesinked totally agree with you. I find that just overall, K-Beauty might use as many products as Western beauty but the look at the end of it just looks a lot lighter and approachable yet elegant and put together? Plus, as much as people complain about K-Beauty shadows not being that pigmented, I appreciate it more now bc I don't accidentally create a mess while doing my makeup
@@harshdeep8835 for? If you want people who do K-Beauty content, I recommend Kennie JD (her older content) and MissDarcei. For brands - there are A LOT so depends on what products you're looking for
I've been on a makeup buying hiatus ever since I got a bunch of makeup for my Bday last year. But I REALLY enjoy Kbeatuy lip products, I'm not into their eye pallets as they barely show up on my skin and I'm not into natural-looking eye shadows but there shimmers GOD LORD they are fire. I always drop money on their liquid shimmers there so so so good.
So I occasionally do makeup for weddings or events and I almost exclusively use lorac eyeshadows because people who are not in the makeup world want neutrals and subtle shimmers, not metallic shimmers.
When you where talking about how different the makeup industries are depending on the country/continent, as a Mexican, even if I love watching your videos and other popular beauty gurus videos, is really hard for me to find the products you sometimes talk about. Most of the time they aren't available here and if they are, they are just too expensive or hard to find. Also (at least where I live) we don't have "drugstore makeup" as you have it. Honestly most of the makeup available here that isn't going to cost me an eye are dupes from kylie cosmetics and stuff like that.
Omg yes, it’s so frustrating. I’m also Mexican and even if some cities here have a Sephora, I doubt they are as stocked as the Sephoras in the States, and the websites who make American brands easier to buy here, charge a lot more! I wanted to purchase a colourpop palette that was at a decent price in Mexican pesos in the official website, but it was lots more in the websites I went to compare prices.
Fellow Mexican here! I also think the more "boring" Sephora palettes are super popular in the instagram guru world, i think since we don't have access to the massive makeup market that exist in EU, brands like Tarte, Too faced and Urban Decay really stand out
Also I find very curious that american brands like Beauty creations, Perplex, even Moira and Bebella seem to cater only to a latin american market, and we rarely see them reviewed by american youtubers! I genuinely would love to see some of this guru's opinions on those launches
I met an awesome group of girls online a few years back and they all live in different countries and would want American makeup so instead of ordering online I would just but it for them and shop it personally and it always ended up a lot cheaper especially if it was a bulk order
Sunday is my favorite day. I get videos from Hannah and the Welsh Twins in the same day. Plus Robert Welsh mentioned you in their Welsh Twin video today!!! That collab would be epic!!
Man, I hate that beauty blogs went out of style. Lists like this were so common there during the late 00s, early 10s - but the difference was that they were based on actual research by people in the beauty community and often featured community polls for people to vote on, which was incredibly helpful for newbies. TH-cam by its nature created a completely different atmosphere (not to say that it's bad necessarily, just different).
Totally agree, although I think now with more micro influencers and smaller channels getting their due that it’s reminding me more of the old school beauty blogs a bit, if that makes sense? And I still LOVE temptalia as my go-to for finding possible dupes to expensive products.
I realized that in editing lol I more meant it was weird they wouldn't link it to a makeup website like beauty bay or the equivalent and instead link to a clothing store because clothing stores usually do have higher percentage's than makeup websites.
The separation between TH-cam/influencer makeup and mainstream makeup is so real! My mom wears a full face daily and shops at Sephora/Ulta just like me, but we buy COMPLETELY different things. She also gets a lot of recommendations from store sales associates that are things I’ve never heard of.
With the nikkie tutorials pallet I had a really hard time working with the shimmers as none of my brushed picked them up. I had to use my fingers which didn't let me have any precision. What I found works for me is using one of those old school sponge eyeshadow blender to pick them up any apply them. But I have to agree that the nikkie tutorials pallet was slightly disappointing.
Lorac shadows are amazing. Just because the beauty community of youtube is no longer hyping them doesn't mean they aren't good. And "best of" doesn't necessarily equate to "most hyped." Also, mainstream magazines are written for a much wider audience than the "beauty community." Walk around town and look at the faces you see (well, maybe the faces you saw prior to Covid masking;) the majority of the women you will see are not using the makeup that is hyped up on youtube.
I agree completely!! Those shadows have so much payoff for me that when I take it off at the end of the night I’m always like holy hell so much shimmer
Same! I love their texture. Mine aren't dry at all - they adhere really well. I do want to get some glitter glue though because the fallout is annoying.
I am so sorry that so many people didn’t really like the Nikkietutorials x BB palette, I heard quite a lot of bad reviews too😭😭 I can totally understand that it didn’t really work well for a lot of people, but for me personally, it works soo well!! I think it was my most used palette of 2020 and still using it every week, I absolutely adore the shimmers in it and mattes too💓🙈🙈 I can’t wait for more products from Nikkie!!💞💞 Love the video though, watching every upload from you Hannah, love yaa girl💞
I just bought a tube of cover girl lash blast mascara because it was $3 on sale and I need the practice before I get my shot and rejoin society. That’s where I’m at with makeup in 2021.
The Nikkie Tutorials pallet shimmers worked wonders for me and were so buttery... all but one. The white shimmer was like chalk for me. I wonder if there were just some defective palettes going out??
2020-2021 was a year of purging unused makeup and simplifying. I couldn’t be more grateful for this “trend.” It really was a huge stress reliever for me!
Loving this idea since "mainstream" can be very different than what we find popular here on TH-cam and on social media in general. It'll be interesting to see if you find any crossover and how you see it as an American
I think sephora didn't think Lorac was high-fashuon enough right? That's why they fell off the bandwagon because makeup retailers wanted other brands that had higher recognition and were pricier. Similar to The Balm I think. You can get The Balm and LORAC at Ulta and even Kohls, but not Sephora.
I used to work for theBalm and they are definitely not sold at Ulta. They are actually difficult to find in stores unless you have a kohl’s nearby, or some select Walgreens. It’s one of their biggest downfalls in the US. The majority of their sales is outside the US.
In the Midwest, sephora is kinda rare outside of the major metropolitan areas. My nearest Sephora is an half hour drive away and it’s in a jcpenny that is closing down. My next nearest Sephora is an hour drive on the highway. It is more likely to have a kohls and to a less extant an Ulta. It makes perfect sense why brands like Lorac and the balm would primarily sell make at kohl’s in the usa. Their target audience is, let’s face it, suburban middle class white woman who wants light neutrals.
@Danielle Lou and Kohl's is at medium risk for bankruptcy. Ulta is partnering with Target. There's going to be mini Ulta's in Target soon. I think that'll be super successful.
I am honestly GOBSMACKED you dont like the shimmers in nikkies palette ✋🏼✋🏼✋🏼✋🏼 they are INCREDIBLE, they absolutely do not work with a brush but with your finger they are truly 👌 in my opinion. I have alot of expensive indie shadows too yet i find nikkies compareable. I do use a glitter glue with all my shimmer shadows tho no matter who from so that helps them to adhere so maybe give them a shot with glitter glue and using your finger x
I thought the same thing! The shimmers are the best in my collection and although the colour scheme is daunting to me I keep going back for the shimmers 😁
I’m the same. The shimmers are amazing for me and it is my most reached for eyeshadow palette. I’ve never managed to have a shimmer work on a brush for me better than my fingers, so if it works on my fingers that’s all I need.
I find shimmers work better wet too. Or your finger. I ran into that issue and once I added water (I don’t like using setting spray to wet my shadows) it makes a difference. I’ll have to try the glitter glue technique.
In Argentina nothing is really popular cause USA's "drugstore price" makeup it's sold here with high-end prices. Also, most of the brands promoted in social media don't even sell here neither have a shipping option to the country on their websites. In the end, we buy what there's available in the farmacy to be purchased (which is really inconsistant across the country and even cities).
That By Terry palette is all over Pinterest in the “aesthetic” makeup layout corner of the site. I’ve never even seen it outside of Pinterest so I assumed it was a palette from ten years ago that I’d never see again, like most things on there.
Your the only TH-camr i feel inspirerd by and can binge all day long!!! With all the drama lately, i just really like watching someone i feel i can trust !! ❤️❤️❤️
Whaaaat, I had to stop mid video. The Nikkie pallete is amazing! The shimmers are like butter. Squishy and buttery. I never use brushes for shimmers tho. But they are my favourite shimmers I own.
@@kat8559 idk this seems to be how it works for people, there isn't much in terms of preference that goes into eyeshadow beyond color since it generally doesn't vary for how it works person to person dramatically
@@nastassjahall9358 I mean people have different techniques that can cause eyeshadow to perform differently. For example a lot of people don’t like using their fingers to apply shimmers so will find shimmers lackluster if they don’t pick up with a brush.
Speaking from a Filipino perspective- the everyday consumer don’t really use eyeshadow palettes, unless you are really into makeup. One thing I’ve always been surprised by about the American makeup market is how it’s rare to see cheek tint!! it’s so popular here with brands like Colourette Cosmetics- with how natural makeup is booming rn, I’m surprised there aren’t as many being promoted/made
I love how when you criticize a product for something, you immediately give another product that does the concept or the job better so its not just critique, but helpful to us as buyers too
I don’t even buy makeup I just love your videos. Like you’ll roast a certain palette’s chalkiness or whatever and I’ll be like “what a good point” even though I have no idea what you’re talking about
On the affiliate links not being through Sephora for Hello, it's a UK-based magazine and we don't have Sephora over here (as much as I would like us to!)
The Dior backstage mascara is the best mascara literally ever. I’ve been using it since 2004 & I haven’t gone a single week without getting a compliment on my lashes!
I have successfully avoided buying any new palettes since November 2019 (which led to me FINISHING a palette), so these lists intrigue me, but in a different way than when I was buying
Smokey my anxiety is at an all time hgh. I have work in 7 hours. I feel someone is looking over me right now, now that i've seen you are posting a roasting. I NEED it. LOL
Low key I’m kinda surprised there was only one Morphe palette and no J* palettes, I would think he might pay his way onto a couple lists to save his brand
Given the fact that his new mascara sold out immediately, I don't think he has to pay his way to "save" his brand. He has a hard core stan group that is going to continue buying his products.
@@cherizangel Selling out means absolutely fucking nothing... we don't know how much he had produced to begin with. Im sure he dialed down on producing sm so that he can sell out
I honestly wonder if you might have had a bad batch of the shimmer in Nikki's palette because, at least for me, her shimmers are just absolutely stunning. They don't apply the greatest with a brush, but what shimmer really do? I basically only use the shimmers in Nikki's palette because they honestly outshine the shimmers in my other palettes
A disconnect between the UK and US market I find funny is that while colourpop is a cheap brand in the US, in the UK it’s more expensive to get and therefore rare. So many of us watch American youtubers who recommend products from affordable US brands like colourpop because they’re good value for money but then people over here will order it and pay extortionate shipping costs and customs charges it’s wild. Or get them from resellers.
another good point is that even different states in the US like completely different things when it comes to makeup. for example Texas, big hair bold makeup but still conservative compared to somewhere else like Philadelphia, PA where anything goes. It’s such a wide spectrum and range of different people and tastes.
Speaking of how mainstream media perceives makeup, the New York Times came out with an article today about how influencer brands are changing the makeup industry, and it was definitely an interesting read as someone who engages in the beauty community. I would definitely recommend it :)
For me, making my own palettes with singles is the most inspiring aspect of makeup lately. I can use multiple formulas, save money, and do something perfect for my own complexion/needs. And if I don't actually use my homemade palette, I can re-arrange it without the guilt or hassle of decluttering.
There's a big difference between the youtube/social media beauty space and everyday average makeup wearers who aren't watching beautubers- MOST people who wear makeup are buying the "boring neutrals" because they don't have massive collections of palettes, and are likely trying to find a colour story that'll be appropriate for work/everyday. There's also brand loyalty, the big brands that seem boring or outdated- Tarte, Urban Decay, Benefit, Estee Lauder, Lancome, etc. etc. are doing very well BECAUSE they cater to those people, not exclusively to social media consumers. We have to remember we're actually a tiny fraction of the people who wear makeup.
I love candles but can be picky about scents. & good quality candles (long burning, fill the room fragrance, no toxins) can be $$ & hard to find so I always appreciate your candle-of-the-day recommendations. Thank you!
21:45 honestly I think the reason ASOS was used is because it looks to be a British list and we don’t have Sephora. Since cult beauty and beauty bay dont seem to stock it, ASOS is fair enough. But I know your point will still stand with other lists ☺️
I have the Soft Glam mini and I LOVE it. I've used every single shade - and that's something I'm really liking about these smaller palettes with more concise colour stories. When you're culling shades to make a smaller 8-pan palette, you're forced to really think about which shades deserve to make the cut, and I think you then end up with a colour story that's much more cohesive. I like to think I'm a pretty creative person when it comes to eyeshadow, but there are so many palettes I see where the colour story just stumps me, and especially in larger palettes, it feels like quite a few shades are just filler, like they wanted a certain number of shades, and they didn't quite reach that number with deliberate shades they liked, so they just chucked a few more in there haphazardly, and it just throws off the whole vibe. And I'm the same as you (Hannah) in that I've fallen victim to buying a palette just because I really liked one or two shades - in fact, I almost fell for that just yesterday - and I'm trying to be way more conscious of that. Also, another random little gripe I have is when the darkest shade in the palette is a goddamn SHIMMER. WHO THINKS THAT'S A GOOD IDEA? AND WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OF THEM?
Do people actually not like the shimmers in the nikkie palate?? One shade was slightly eh, but the rest looked comparable to Pat McGrath shades they were seriously stunning. I have hundreds of palates and this is one of my favs 💀
A lot of my friends who got it had a similar experience to me where it was super dry and awful to work with but judging by the comments it seems like maybe some palettes were just inconsistent?
@@smokey_glow I think that you're probably right about the incosistancy because for me and most other people the shimmers literally feel wet in the pan and go on super intensely and easily with a finger, so if yours were dry and difficult that's a huge red flag. If you and your friends got yours in PR there may have just been a problem in production or transport where all the shimmers got dried out or something along those lines. I'd honestly recommend buying another one while they're still availible because the shimmers are AMAAAAAZING when they're not dried out and they also seem to be super up your alley based on what you've said in videos before. "All In" is literally the most beautiful eyeshadow I've ever experiened in my life (it beats pat mgrath tbh) and it makes me sad that you haven't gotten to experience it in all it's glory lol
Regarding the byTerry pallet, I have seen that pallet everywhere and everyone raving about it. (I’m in europe). To the point where I’m intrested in going to a store and swatch it. (When you can do that again).
I’d love to see you do a review for high end makeup brands. Like Dior, Givenchy, Tom Ford, Gucci etc. Like comparing luxury brands to what you usually use.
I think Wild West is the most recognizable bigger 2021 release. Most of what I’ve seen indicates it is a great palette. Other than ColourPop, who else has released something notable this year? Well, except e.l.f.’s mint collection. 😀
Actually that naked palette is really love here in South America, I think the colors are just perfect for our average skin color and it blends beautifully on us.
I agree with you on the Naked concept, but I found the Wild West palette to be substantially better than the last few! Especially impressed with the matte teal, it is nearly as pigmented as Subculture but it actually blends. But I've always been a sucker for this kind of color scheme, so I'm biased...
"I didn't realize there was a mini palette included in this elf release." Me, a mint-green addict : Is anybody gonna tell her there were two mini palettes in that release? Should I tell her?
Holymolly i haven't been this early ever but i'm really glad you uploaded now. I really needed to get out of head and i really enjoy your content and your personality. And keep doing what makes you feel good, that's the most important. Love from Hungary
I've got some of the Animal Crossing colourpop collection because I've been a fan of AC for a very long time and for the price the eyeshadow is good except for the pressed glitter. The lip tints are my new favourites though.
This was such an interesting and creative concept, I absolutely LOVED this video and would love to see more like this, I think this could be such a cool series where you look at publications based off of their general age demographic, as well as more mainstream, less women’s/beauty centric sites like when you see makeup or beauty recommendations in a People Magazine or any kind of beauty trend/commentary type articles in something like the Washington Post or Time. It’d be really cool to look at the disconnect between “teen” magazines and sites and what actual teens are interested in based on TikTok trends as well as even seeing how different sites write about teen trends based on their target and/or main demographics, like the difference in how say Seventeen Magazine vs. Refinery29 would write about top teen beauty trends. Also, I just wanted to say that you have by far become my favorite go-to TH-cam channel for when I need a laugh, a good recommendation, or to nod my head in baffled agreement about ridiculous things going on in the world.
No hate! Just find it funny that you mentioned before that makeup and makeup trends are different in different parts of the world. And then when you talk about the hello magazine article you mentioned that you found it strange they didnt like sephora. Many countries dont have sephora. Like you said before its not all like in the usa
My girls have gotten me all but the first UD palettes. I use some once in awhile. But the Wild West one I love. The product is creamy and blends so good. The colors at first more than half intimidated me. Since I've seen a lot of UD tutorials in Insta. I'm loving adding more color in. My girl's are empressed 😆 I loved this video. We don't always have to agree. That's what I like about you. I love your add. Its been hard sick and isolated in pandemic. This would help alot. See how much you help. You always make me smile. Thank you so so much for being you. 💕
The disconnect between mainstream beauty media and everyday makeup wearers is astounding to me
Also, the vast majority of us don’t need massive colorful palettes. I just want stuff that I can wear everyday that has good quality. The small quads of fun colors that can supplement a “boring” collection has been a useful trend for me.
They all just pay to be in the magazines.
Why is anyone making these lists anyway when it is still ??? M A R C H ???
Oh my god yes! It’s so strange! If they’re gonna do anything it should be winter/spring.
I think it's supposed to be like, buy this year of what came out last year. But idk, those palettes might be a mix of both years.
at least call it spring 2021 or smh
I do it all the time 😂 so they write these articles and then just create updated versions throughout the year so they always have an up-to-date shopping guide and can keep their site at the top of the search engine results 🙃
did we time travel or are we only 3 months into 2021? how have the best palettes already been decided
I was seriously confused and questioning if she kept meaning to say 2020. 😂🤣
I feel like makeup is just so boring during the pandemic, like pandemic burnout has definitely reached the makeup creative teams too
Definitely! And I’m feeling the creative burnout too. I don’t get excited for new stuff anymore
I miss being excited about lipstick
Agreed. There's so much of it to the point where it starts to all look the same
Can't say I blame them, must be a tough crowd atm
Girl yes! I feel brands like Colourpop who come up with products every week or two make makeup feel so boring and oversaturated. I don't get excited for anything anymore new launches come out and It just feels meh.
Me: sees the Naked Wild West palette
Me, in my head: ahhh, the Arizona Divorcée palette 😂😂😂 Theresa pretty much nailed it with that description.
I can't think of that palette any other way now! 😂
Same but it gave me santa fe vibes
@@yvonnekilla3971 Yeah totally
who's theresa??
@@bheatriz.6588 Theresa Is Dead. Funky, kinda edgy chick with a makeup channel. She’s singular 👍🏼
The Jackie Aina palette remains the most snubbed eyeshadow palette in the history of amazing makeup that didn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Yes! Best palette I own, hands down.
@@jayyyyynickiiiii best in mine as well!
Also Patricia Bright's collect with Revolution. She made TWO palettes and I didn't see a single review!
Not gonna lie as someone who isn't that involved with the beauty world living in the netherlands where make up isnt that big i fully understand why the wild west pallet is there, for me it looks really good, you have your neutral shades and a pop of color and from what I've seen you can create quite a view looks with it,
yeah the Wild West pallette looks super pretty to me!
There are always more makeup users than makeup lovers in the market. I’m not at all surprised that it’s popular.
Yep. If I didn't already have a huge collection I would have bought it.

That, and with the mask covering half of your work, or smudging it upon taking it on & off all day.
And with the mask breaking most of us out, we need skincare more than ever!
am I the only one who feels uninspired by makeup lately? just feels like its all the same ahah
Same honestly. Very few new releases have gotten me excited. I’m hoping the next round of summer launches will pick things up.
It’s because everything has been done, and shoved in our faces at rapid speed!!!
nope you're not the only one
You're not alone. That said, the way I have tried to inspire myself, and what I have found myself more interested in, is my single eyeshadows. I've found myself really interested in creating my own color stories. And I've been more interested in finding unique shades that I don't have, or staple shades that I know I'll use a lot. I also found really affordable magnetic palettes from shopmissa and I've really been enjoying myself
yeah I feel like covid contributed as well tbh
I never thought I would have gotten to the point where I wasn’t excited about new makeup....It’s so uninspiring
The no makeup-makeup/ minimal makeup trend has been the only helped with that because it feels more new than all the boring stuff that’s been coming out for years
Thank you! I genuinely don’t understand the appeal of “no makeup, makeup”
These articles always seem so fake and forced. The lists are always so repetitive too! Also, love you beautiful xoxo
Its because they are "under the table" paid advertisements. That's why they feel so "forced". Because it is.
Yeah same in the Netherlands!
I must be secretly European 😊
💯
100% - I feel like (big) palettes have gotten more popular recently but for a long time, single eyeshadows, duos or quads were the go to here (Germany). People curated their own "palettes" by depanning singles instead of buying actual ones, I remember watching a lot of those videos in ~2013-16
Also European, most people I know barely wear eyeshadow, and maybe have one palette they got from their mom. Eyeliner is definitely much more common.
Yeah as someone who spends alot of time around make-up artists (film/theatre) that Vogue seemed awful sus.
Hello is a British magazine and we don't have sephora over here. That could also be why they linked to ASOS
They really need to sort that out already
That's crazy. I'm Australian and pretty sure we can buy from Sephora!
All because they won’t change their US site to make it GDPR compliant 🤦♀️
The dior backstage pallete had very little pigmentation and I found it extremely dry and patchy.
Thank you! I don't see how anyone likes it. I thought for sure the Backstage line would die out.
I rather have the new Samantha March x Ofra palette for mauves than that dusty Dior palette.
Sol! I love your tiktok and seeing your comments in here always make me smile 🥺 You are such a lovely person
SOL!!! I was like wow this girls pic looks just like sol - and it was you 🥺
I actually think this is what some people like about it. When I give my mom ultra-pigmented palette's she's so annoyed she has to spend so much time blending. While i love pigment, i think some people find unpigmented palettes easier to work with.
The “Hello” site linked the palette through ASOS because we don’t get Sephora in the UK and Ireland
I saw the Naked Wild West palette in the thumbnail paired with the title and I clicked immediately...
Is the minimum wage you mentioned weekly?
@@em84c it is monthly, actually!
@@Alana-st7px that's crazy! I thought it being weekly was bad. Hopefully you're rent and food is cheaper than average? 😬
Or people just copying the vogue list (or someone else's list) to avoid doing research and just making money off affiliate links
No hate though. I hate my job and think I should start doing stuff like this.
Wow, I hadn’t heard of that! There’s always a new advertising strategy to learn about it seems.
They just make these lists to make money with affiliate links.
hey Hannah, in your last video you mispronounced Waikiki, it's actually said like Why-Key-Key. I appreciate and care for you too much to let you go around saying it wrong, I've lived in Hawaii and my husband is from there so Hawaiian language is used in my house daily so when I hear it said wrong it catches my attention hard. (I’m in the US.)
im from the UK and i can confirm we do not have sephora here! I have used asos to buy makeup before
I’m from the U.K. and the links for the Hello article are all places I would shop for and buy makeup.
I'm in the UK and was going to comment similarly - can confirm, no Sephora or Ulta.
In the ELF palette, that’s not a silver it’s an iridescent light shimmer foam type green with a shift, it’s a gorgeous little palette actually, I liked that and the mint green shadow stick, but their shimmer shadow sticks were disappointing
I suspect that ELF one is like a “cheap” option on these lists and it is decent quality

Fun fact: Lorac is literally Carol (the founders name) spelled backwards.
It def sounds better than Carol
When you where talking about how different the makeup industries are depending on the country/continent, as a Mexican, even if I love watching your videos and other popular beauty gurus videos, is really hard for me to find the products you sometimes talk about. Most of the time they aren't available here and if they are, they are just too expensive or hard to find. Also (at least where I live) we don't have "drugstore makeup" as you have it. Honestly most of the makeup available here that isn't going to cost me an eye are dupes from kylie cosmetics and stuff like that.
++ also buying makeup online is so expensive lmao and it can take a couple weeks
I LITERALLY SAID “I don’t even know what that is” AS SOON AS YOU PULLED THE SWEET FACE PALETTE BY TARTE UP
It's the only reason I clicked on the video! I saw it in the thumbnail and had to know.
Just a side note, Hello is a UK magazine and we don't have Sephora here...
I realized that in editing lol I more meant it was weird they wouldn't link it to a makeup website like beauty bay or the equivalent and instead link to a clothing store because clothing stores usually do have higher percentage's than makeup websites.

I saw that too, and then I looked at the box and it suggested using a finger. I think the old school sponge thing is a good tip tho!
This is the first time I’ve ever disagreed with you so much like the Nikkie shimmers are literally INSANE I’m just kind of surprised lol
I agree completely!! Those shadows have so much payoff for me that when I take it off at the end of the night I’m always like holy hell so much shimmer
@@carolinemercer9779 see lol thank you! They also make the most stunning halo eye ever
Same! I love their texture. Mine aren't dry at all - they adhere really well. I do want to get some glitter glue though because the fallout is annoying.
@@babysnister that makes sense! glitter glue is something i also need to buy lol
I agree!! I have the palette and I use it so much, I think the shimmers are the best I’ve ever had!
I am so sorry that so many people didn’t really like the Nikkietutorials x BB palette, I heard quite a lot of bad reviews too😭😭 I can totally understand that it didn’t really work well for a lot of people, but for me personally, it works soo well!! I think it was my most used palette of 2020 and still using it every week, I absolutely adore the shimmers in it and mattes too💓🙈🙈 I can’t wait for more products from Nikkie!!💞💞
Love the video though, watching every upload from you Hannah, love yaa girl💞
I just bought a tube of cover girl lash blast mascara because it was $3 on sale and I need the practice before I get my shot and rejoin society. That’s where I’m at with makeup in 2021.
The Nikkie Tutorials pallet shimmers worked wonders for me and were so buttery... all but one. The white shimmer was like chalk for me. I wonder if there were just some defective palettes going out??
Oof yeah the white one sucks
Like it wasn't prestige enough for Sephora 🙄 so stupid. Reason number 84759 why Ulta is better.
I used to work for theBalm and they are definitely not sold at Ulta. They are actually difficult to find in stores unless you have a kohl’s nearby, or some select Walgreens. It’s one of their biggest downfalls in the US. The majority of their sales is outside the US.
@@madisonnelson8867 oh ok. Well they used to be sold at Ulta so I guess both Sephora and Ulta dropped them.
I found the shimmers on the NikkiTutorials pallette work really well and got less dry when you broke past the surface layer.
The green palette from elf is actually a duchrome-type shade. It's a nice palette.
Wait whaaaaat the shimmers in the Nikki palette are literally so amazing for me???
SAME idk how people can have a hard time with them, they're so easy to use¿¿
@@einhorntaschentuch9404 I feel like it has to be inconsistencies in the batches or something?
Your channel is growing like crazy lately, and I just want to say it's SO well deserved. ♥️♥️
Living in Korea I almost never see palettes with a lot 9f bright pigmented colours. The trend is more neutral shades, pinks, corals and light shimmers
Glad you brought back the braid, it’s an A+++ look for you ☺️
Thank you! 🥰🥰
Whaaaat, I had to stop mid video. The Nikkie pallete is amazing! The shimmers are like butter. Squishy and buttery. I never use brushes for shimmers tho. But they are my favourite shimmers I own.
There have to be batch inconsistencies or something, it’s blowing my mind that people are saying they don’t like them
Or maybe people have different preferences
@@kat8559 idk this seems to be how it works for people, there isn't much in terms of preference that goes into eyeshadow beyond color since it generally doesn't vary for how it works person to person dramatically
@@nastassjahall9358 I mean people have different techniques that can cause eyeshadow to perform differently. For example a lot of people don’t like using their fingers to apply shimmers so will find shimmers lackluster if they don’t pick up with a brush.
Speaking from a Filipino perspective- the everyday consumer don’t really use eyeshadow palettes, unless you are really into makeup. One thing I’ve always been surprised by about the American makeup market is how it’s rare to see cheek tint!! it’s so popular here with brands like Colourette Cosmetics- with how natural makeup is booming rn, I’m surprised there aren’t as many being promoted/made
I love how when you criticize a product for something, you immediately give another product that does the concept or the job better so its not just critique, but helpful to us as buyers too
2 videos in one day! 😭 thank you!
I’m having a really stressful day so this video came at the perfect time. Thank you!! ❤️
I don’t even buy makeup I just love your videos. Like you’ll roast a certain palette’s chalkiness or whatever and I’ll be like “what a good point” even though I have no idea what you’re talking about
♥️♥️♥️ I hope tomorrow is better and I’m happy I can help at all!
@@smokey_glow It literally was better you’re a miracle worker
On the affiliate links not being through Sephora for Hello, it's a UK-based magazine and we don't have Sephora over here (as much as I would like us to!)
The Dior backstage mascara is the best mascara literally ever. I’ve been using it since 2004 & I haven’t gone a single week without getting a compliment on my lashes!
I have successfully avoided buying any new palettes since November 2019 (which led to me FINISHING a palette), so these lists intrigue me, but in a different way than when I was buying
Same! Not since mid 2018, but still really enjoy this content. In a different way
Smokey my anxiety is at an all time hgh. I have work in 7 hours. I feel someone is looking over me right now, now that i've seen you are posting a roasting. I NEED it. LOL
Low key I’m kinda surprised there was only one Morphe palette and no J* palettes, I would think he might pay his way onto a couple lists to save his brand
forgot he existed lol
And will keep on forgetting that he exists.
Loving the fluffy braid/velvet headband/glasses combo!!
I live in Chile and everyone here loves Urban Decay palettes😂
For me, making my own palettes with singles is the most inspiring aspect of makeup lately. I can use multiple formulas, save money, and do something perfect for my own complexion/needs. And if I don't actually use my homemade palette, I can re-arrange it without the guilt or hassle of decluttering.
I love that in every single video you say hello to us at least three times 😂😂
I love that you roast these webpages. They made me look like a clown when I started getting into makeup.
I have hundreds of palates and this is one of my favs 💀
omg same! I think they’re so shiny n pretty, i’m so confused at people saying they weren’t good 😭
A lot of my friends who got it had a similar experience to me where it was super dry and awful to work with but judging by the comments it seems like maybe some palettes were just inconsistent?
I love mine too only one that's meh is the yellow it doesn't show up on me at all
@@smokey_glow I think that you're probably right about the incosistancy because for me and most other people the shimmers literally feel wet in the pan and go on super intensely and easily with a finger, so if yours were dry and difficult that's a huge red flag.
@@harlottebronte “All-In” is seriously one of my favorite eyeshadows to date, “Pride” and “Roxy Catan” are close behind ❤️
Regarding the byTerry pallet, I have seen that pallet everywhere and everyone raving about it. (I’m in europe). To the point where I’m intrested in going to a store and swatch it. (When you can do that again).
Ok but the wild west palette is actually really good! The quality is really nice, I was really surprised because I wasn't expecting much lol
I found your channel a couple of days ago and now I'm just binge-watching it. College? I don't know her 🚶♀️
isn't it fun!! 🙋
I agree with you on the Naked concept, but I found the Wild West palette to be substantially better than the last few! Especially impressed with the matte teal, it is nearly as pigmented as Subculture but it actually blends. But I've always been a sucker for this kind of color scheme, so I'm biased...
"I didn't realize there was a mini palette included in this elf release."
Me, a mint-green addict : Is anybody gonna tell her there were two mini palettes in that release? Should I tell her?
Holymolly i haven't been this early ever but i'm really glad you uploaded now. I really needed to get out of head and i really enjoy your content and your personality. And keep doing what makes you feel good, that's the most important. Love from Hungary

omg you look so cute! love the braid and the headband matching the eye makeup 💖
My girl's are empressed 😆
I loved this video. We don't always have to agree. That's what I like about you. I love your add. Its been hard sick and isolated in pandemic. This would help alot. See how much you help. You always make me smile. Thank you so so much for being you. 💕
Although I have never tried Lorac I grew up seeing it sold in Kohl's. It gives me the same vibe as Forever 21 makeup
I'd love to see your list Smokey Glow! We would trust that one!
