Relying on that engine management is like entering an FB group and asking a question. The number of answers you’ll get back will range from reasonably accurate to downright bizarre. The moral of this story is fit two aftermarket temp gauges, ideally with a warning buzzer so you don’t miss the cooking whilst admiring the scenery. All this pain for one poxy thermostat! 🙄

After high school I worked at a Detroit shop in Houston called Stewart & Stevenson. We found some 92 series that overheated would crack the block right across the liner O-ring grooves at the thin section in the block between the liners. After you clean those grooves give it a close look. The cracks were always visible.
We also checked thermostats in hot water to verify they opened. Most of the time when they failed they froze in the open position.
The 92's were just rolling out in 1977 and we spent most of our time replacing main and rod bearings after DDA redesigned them by adding the large slot across the top shell.
Your channel brings back a lot of vivid memories.

Thanks for the opening fault explanation Been wondering why you needed the overhaul (I know VERY little about engines) Just a simple part causing so much damage Seen so many guys sent thermostats to a trash can saying unnecessary You just proved them wrong

I am an old aircraft mechanic and I have a exhaust temp and cylinder temp guage that monitors both sides of the engine. The CHT pickup is a washer that goes under a spark plug or a bold somewhere on the head the egt gauge is designed to do the same under a bolt on the exhaust manifold. This way you can monitor the head temp as well as the exhaust gas to see if you have a dropped cylinder. They are available on line for about $400 for two. They are a great indicator of the type of problem that the Wanderlodge had.

A was with a woman who’s father was a Member of Vintage Bluebirds. He was grandfathered in and allowed to keep his two digit number placard on his new Wanderlodge. I first met him at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. He drove the Coach from Titusville, FL to Alaska and stopped here in Denver area on the way home to Titusville. Some line fitting had broken from the rough Alaska roads. I’m not sure what part it was, but a place outside of Denver had the part in stock. He pulled a Cadillac Escalade painted to match for his go to town rig. Very nice setup 👍🏻

Yes. Dual thermostats on this beast. My first thought. Great repair, Scott!
Bet you feel more comfortable with the 8v92 DDEC. Good stuff, man. At its heart, it's still a Detroit. You're a good man. Don't limit yourself...i didn't. The electronic stuff is different, but it has the same soul.
Hehe, at 10:25? Yes, those are foot-pounds! Love those Detroits!
    Beautiful Silver 92.
Loved seeing Leroy at the startup. Bear's scared of the relief valve sound on the air brakes (compressor), poor guy. I have to get him used to that. Didn't think a 180 pound Saint could be afraid of anything...
Glad to see Tyler out there, man. You guys are a real team. Thanks for making yet another weekend great for this old wrench. Hehe.
On my good friend's Prevost, 8V92TA, I've been telling him I'll do his bearings soon. It's a labor of love. You guys understand. Looking forward to having a coach of my own soon. I'm 56. You understand.
I have a nice FLIR digital camera I use at work. Going to test the Webasto heater soon on that coach. Why? Because it's fun, man.
Replaced the electronics on that system last year. I want to be sure it's distributing heat through the block properly. We went crazy with solar as well, three industrial panels on the roof. Lots of fun. MPPT system, he's been boondocking with no issues.

When you are working with thin headed bolts you either need to grind the end of the socket flat or you need to get the special sockets for that purpose. With the tapered tip on sockets you are only grabbing about half of the thickness of the head of the bolts. If I don't have the specific size flush end socket I just take it over to my belt/disc sander and make the end of the socket flush.

I am not a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel specialist, however i have built a few engines and whomever said " It sounds great" ,
you are absolutely right! That messed with me; After Torquing the main caps, showing no oil pan, oil pick up screen in full view, ............ , forgot to show or say we installed the oil pan and filled it, and then "We are just going to run it for about sixty seconds" engine starts and i like was holding my breath.. Consider me pranked.

Short head hex bolts.. require grinding the end of the socket flat to get rid of any relief cuts put in by the socket manufacturer.. i have also had to regrind sockets that get used a lot to work down to fresh hex broaching to avoid rounding over the bolt heads.. yes.. it will void the warranty on the socket.. but that is better than rounding a bolt head.. on similar 12 point bolts.. i have shortened the socket significantly..

An extension with a swivel and socket can affect the torque depending on the angle. Adapters will affect the torque wrench setting if the distance changes between the fastener and the torque wrench handle. A straight extension will have no effect on the torque wrench setting.
