  • Gigafactory Texas! This is where Model Y’s, and Cyber Truck production happens and soon, the Next Generation Car!
6 March 2024 Giga Texas images! Low clouds & mist, but very active site!
I was surprised driving to Giga Texas today because it was clear skies with a nice sunrise developing as I left San Antonio, but I saw a low "wall" of clouds in the distance over Austin and as I drove through it, it became foggy with low clouds and mist, and this persisted throughout my drone flight at Giga Texas. Despite this weather challenge, I was able to capture a lot of interesting developments today!
One important item I discussed in the video introduction is the date for SpaceX's next Starship launch has been announced, and it is planned for 14 March (next Thursday. Because of this, barring any last-minute changes, I will be departing for Starbase early next week and will be covering the launch, so I will not be doing Giga Texas videos next week. Jeff Roberts and Brad Sloan will fill in the gaps while I am away.
    Timestamps:
Drone flight overview with discussion & illustration: 0:06 to 4:09
Drone flight footage & infographics: 4:31 to 31:01
A few areas to highlight from today include:
The west outbound lot and new End-of-Line (EOL) facility continue to see final developments underway while at the same time becoming more operational every day! The supercharger installation on the south end of the EOL is a good example of this today. Now all the asphalt is completed, the painted line markings with directional arrows have been added, hinting at how this site will be used. In addition, two Cybertrucks were plugged in supercharging at the time of my drone flyover ... the first time I am aware of that these superchargers have been operational!
The outbound lot is still getting work on the south end and the north extension area, but otherwise was filled with Model Y's and Cybertrucks, along with many transport trucks loading up new vehicles and taking them to various distribution sites around Austin. In the north expansion lot, more trenching and conduit installation was underway today.
The new concrete apron on the west side of the EOL facility has been marked as a test track with turn around loops on either end of each track. This will replace the temporary test track on the east testing lot, including relocating the rumble strips that are installed on the east side track.
The south end main factory extension shows a lot of progress on many fronts. the southwest corner is nearly completed with steel erection, which just a small triangular area left to complete. on the east side, more steel is being added to the new perimeter grade beam, extending towards the four large tanks. Mud bases have been added to the two large excavations on the ground floor near where the south perimeter grade beam is double thickness. Window crews were preparing to add even more huge glass panes on the south side of the new structure, with the large yellow lifting strut with suction cups ready to pick up another pane being unloaded from a wooden crate. I was able to confirm only three panes are loaded into each crate.
The northeast corner of the casting section of the main factory was very busy today, with many castings and casting rack systems filled with castings sorted along the east and northeast sides. Crews were working in the newly cleared section of concrete, preparing delicate trenching operations while two large bundles of steel poles were delivered near this section. These recall an earlier stage of construction at Giga Texas where poles like these served as temporary supports for huge concrete columns.
Much more to see in the images and talk about in the video later today around the site! Thanks for watching and for your continued support and encouragement!

    Thanks Joe
5:22. Westside. Tunnel Project. Spoil pit. Fixing ties across the concrete lego long edges. Steelwork on the ground to the left appears to have cleats/tabs at a similar spacing. Some material already dumped in the pit. Probably the sludge that was in front of the TBM.
8:49. New EOL north. Inside the door. White machine. Could be part of a drive-on dynamometer, or the traction motor for a movable production line deck.
9:33. New EOL Superchargers. Couple of arrows marked to show the normal orientation.
11:26. GA west. Old ramp location. Threshold has been saw-cut and part removed.
11:37. GA. Highway side. Lift station. Some issues still. Might be by-passing whatever is in the rectangular vault.
13:09. Southend, west. Stack of steel. Right. Particularly deep beam with connection brackets for bracing. More ‘bracing’ related beams seen to the left, and at 13:47 to the right. Conspicuous lack of braced columns in the structure until now.
14:10. Southend, south. Left. Worker standing on a 6’ or 7’ 1.8m or 2.1m stepladder. Shows the top of the cast-in groove (potential door opening) centre is about the same height.
14:19. Southend, south. Inside. Joe’s photos include ‘The Money Shot’ of a view inside. Top of mud slab to underside of what I think is a lintel/beam for a door opening is about 12’ 3.6m.
14:29. Southend, south. To the right. Painted section of retaining wall would be a clue as to the finished grade outside the building.
15:03. Southend, diagonal corner. Bottom. Black frames that look like frames to store glass on.
15:46. Southend. Tank farm. Top. Lids/caps have the various fitting flanges arranged. Some cut out.
16:01. Southend. Inside. Top. Excavation. Formwork shuttering for a finished slab placed on the mud slab.
17:23. Stamping, apron. Left. Large white crated delivery.
20:24. BIW, apron. Left. Concrete placed for a footing for the ramp retaining wall. May be the mud slab only.
21:44. Casting east. Apron. Stack of screw/auger piles. Some handy pilot holes.
Something heavy to be placed here. Not the setout expected for a structure. Might be another Tank Farm.
Left some pipes on the roof may be related.
22:39. Paint. Apron. Cybertruck rear castings seen being crated up in Brad’s video yesterday. Completed castings, not untrimmed castings like these.
23:59. BESS switchyard. Knife switches that control the Megapacks are closed. To the right, the knife switches controlling the cables to the Mega-Vaults at the new switchyard/substation are open.
Megapacks ‘might’ be connected to the grid. Not connected to the factory.
27:00. Crash Test Track. Near the bottom right corner of the yellow plastic. Thin hose connected to the end of a Dewalt battery blower. Blowing debris out of holes drilled for the starter bars.
28:36. Cathode, west. Trench. Bottom centre. As noted by Bob Callahan a hydrant was just dropped off. Presumably the trench related.
29:11. Die Shop, north. Installing a flue or ductwork between the kiln/oven and the Die Shop.

Thanks Joe for the close up view of the switches!
    Megapacks:
@ 23:59 A lot of vehicles in the yard. cabinet door open on one of the megapacks.
    BESS substation:
@ 24:01 all 12 switches to the megapacks closed on this side.
@ 24:05 Don't have a clear view of the 12 switches on the other side but they appear closed as well.
Those switches were open for the last two weeks. with only 6 switches being closed for a few days. They were all open yesterday.
Let me remind everyone that closed switches doesn't necessarily mean that the megapacks are operational. Since circuit breakers along the way may be open.
When the megapack yard is empty of work crews, that may be an indication they might be operational.
    EOL facility:
    South superchargers:
@ 9:42 Two Cybertrucks parked in the wrong direction against the arrows, also not plugged in.
    EDIT: Cybertrucks ARE plugged in.
@ 11:41 (Right) Another closed vault. An indication that the duct-banks to the superchargers are energized or soon will be.
    Parking garage:
@ 17:33 (Lower left) What appears to be 2 bases for switchgear cabinets.
@ 17:41 (Bottom) Where duct-banks head towards the building.
    East parking lot superchargers:
@ 20:09 Speculating that these will be temporarily shut down soon, when the westside superchargers become operational. That will allow them to be disconnected from the temporary power supply and reconnected to power from the main building.
    Eastside of casting:
@ 20:58 With the exception of reconnecting the superchargers to power from the building....
Cable splicing appears complete in the open vault by the stairs. Bringing to an end a months long project to connect the factory to the new substation.
@ 21:40 Stacks of screw piles?

At 28:37 you see those four large pipes with valves and temporary end-caps? The four openings above those pipes appear to be the same as the openings under the four Evapco units to their right. That, in combination with the bare ground to the left implies that this is expansion space for, perhaps, a doubling of the cathode production capacity later. The two stainless steel tanks to the right of the Evapco units look exactly like the two not yet installed ones that have been stored up north for the last several months, on their sides. That big white tank up against the building has two open ports as well. Their are also four pairs of buried conduits coming up from the ground in front of that white tank. It all looks like planned capacity expansion.

Thanks Joe for another great flight, and the insightful commentary. Can you check if there's been more tunnel segments delivered? Last I saw there was only about half of the required number. I think they're either 1.5m or 5ft long, and 6 segments per ring. so that may eventually allow us to estimate total length.
Also worth watching the nearest point the tunnel can exit. Inside the factory is looking less likely, with all the steel in the way. Also, going back to May/June, there seems to be a groundwater management well along that path, which wouldn't make sense if they have to tunnel through it.

13:19 One of the theoretical TBM exit points is just inside or just outside the opening on the perimeter of the building in the center of this screenshot. That's because it is perfectly across from the TBM ready to go under the freeway. However, if you look closely, you will see the deep pumping station that was installed last year literally feet away. I would find it incredible that they would plan to tunnel so close to this with only feet away as the TBM would have to have made it's upturn by then..
Therefore, the TBM either has to exit within the Southern extension, traveling safely far below the pumping station, or some place on the other side of the new building. What does everyone else think?
Edit to add: another possibility other folks have mentioned is that it comes out of the ground just past the freeway in an analogous position of it's new to be drilled entrance!

    • @DessieDoolan
      @DessieDoolan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

13:19. Deep well. The well is well* clear of the tunnel alignment. Manholes to south also clear of the alignment. A drain connects the manholes to the well, that drain is deep enough for the tunnel to pass above. No other reason for it being that deep.
This deep well (in hindsight) was the first part of the tunnel project.
      *pun intended.

    • @DessieDoolan
      @DessieDoolan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Cut and past from a previous comment. "Southend glazing. 12,000lbs. For that weight it must be laminated glass.
      In metric, 9m x 2m x 0.12m x 2.5 (relative density of glass) = 5400kg. 50kg for a surrounding frame. 12,015lbs.
Counterweights on the vacuum lifting rig are 5 x 1000kg. 5000kg."
I think it might be doubled glazed with one surface (likely outer) multiple laminations (4 or 5), gap, 2 laminations.
Sedak the German glass supplier has a particularly good website.

    • @DavidJohnson-tv2nn
      @DavidJohnson-tv2nn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not necessarily connected to the grid. The might be, but it can't be confirmed. The thing about switch positions is that they can only tell you if something is NOT connected. They can not confirm a connection even if they are closed. That is due to the fact that there are also circuit breakers that may be open. While circuit breakers may have indicators, they are not visible from the drone.
Not sure about green blinking lights on the megapacks. A better indicator may be.... Switches closed, the absence of work crews from the megapack yard, and all gates closed. Or... If Joe or Brad get a chance to talk to one of the contractors working on the project.

Just a thought about the tunnel. My bet would be that there could be up to 4 when finished. 2 at the south end to bring Cybertrucks to the EOL facility and a people mover to take porters back and 2 at the west side for Model Y’s and porter return.

I’d be very surprised if the cars won’t end up going through the tunnel by themselves. There might be a separate tunnel for the Y, but they might just as well drive them through the factory to the south tunnel.

    • @stephenboyd897
      @stephenboyd897 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The maximum capacity of a single tunnel is way more than the production capacity of all 3 lines.
Let’s assume both Cybertruck and MY production is one vehicle every 30 seconds and compact is twice that, for a total of 8 per minute or under 500 per hour.
At 10 kilometres per hour, a vehicle every 10 metres equals 1000 per hour.
If vehicles drive autonomously there isn’t a need for a return tunnel.
