Good race. Vmax is legend. Though the 1/4 mile is almost always won way before the 1/8th. The start and first few feet can mean everything. Jay Gleason got a near stock 1200 Vmax into 9's back in the 80's. ;)

You can only put so much power down on a street tire. I remember when i was riding Busa's and a zx14, The Busa just wanted to wheelie so I extended the swing arm 6" and all it wanted to do is spin the tire. I think 4" would have been perfect for me. If I ever got it to hook up it would wheelie about 6" and spin the tire at the same time, that was as good as it ever got. If you had a soft slick you could gear it up slightly, but these bikes just make too much power for a street tire...
I don't understand how the Vmax rider is getting that rear tire to hook up so well. When I test rode the Vmax last Summer it spun the rear tire almost every time I shifted gears.
I had to leave like a baby. The track was S*it! If you watch my last pass, it spun in the top of first, and I wasn't full throttle. I really like riding the V-Max, it's a fun bike (:
It's a drag strip. VHT is put down for traction so it's mutch stickier than the road. Otherwise you gotta slip the clutch and load into the rear tire, rather than just give it the berries. But yeah, I go through a tire a year and less than 1500 miles.
that rider comes off the line like a boss with that sport bike, that's why they lose to a lot of bikes races in the 1/4 mile because they go straight up.

I understand the Vmax was a way heavier bike but it's bullshit it was never picked up by the performance crowd. It had the displacement to make up for the weight. And not in a Triumph 2300 or Harley way, in a fully fleshed out high rpm DOHC engine way. You slap a sufficient sized tire on there, and sufficient suspension, add aggressive cams and some compression, and that alone probably would have been good for high 8s passes. Take it further with forced induction, bb/stroker or nitrous, and it would keep up with any similarly modified busa. But Yamahas marketing is notoriously bad. They make REALLY good, actually the BEST products for a specific market that doesn't quite exist... If the 09 Vmax had been made appropriately to compete with the Diavel, or even marketed and equipped appropriately to take on muscle cruisers, it would have been much more of a success. Instead Yamaha made something for, uh, muscle cruisers who uh, only want to go for short trips... (100mi range) or for short trip sport bikers who only go in a straight line, and also still get beat by liter bikes... Like what were they thinking, making a nostalgia okay for a minorly noteworthy bike from 1985!??!? That was otherwise smoked by competition just a few years after. It'd be one thing if the 09 Vmax was the quickest bike you could buy at it's release. It wasn't even that. Multiple regular production bikes could slaughter it. And it's not like there isn't a market for a bike like I'm describing. A comfortable cruiser that could easily out drag any superbike made?? Americans would be all over that. We don't have curves. Why do you think muscle cars were so popular!? Hell the Zuk M109, Harley Vrod, and Indian Scout are plenty popular and they're not even the fastest. They just have/had the price and fuel tank to support what they really were used for. Cruising.
