Pray for my father oh saint Monica. May he be delivered for alcoholism, he is troubling us all with his habits. He doesn't listen at all. My wedding is on 2nd Jan 2020 but I am in agony because of his behaviour. He had left alcohol after attending retreat for and lived a good life for few year and became an example to everyone. But today the clock has again gone back to old bad days. Now he only holds bible when he is drunk. I feel he is offend God. We pleaded to him but he doesn't listen at all. My mother got diabetes after handling this pressure for so many years but still his heart doesn't melt. When he had left alcohol few years beck he even gave a testamony in the retreat center on the altar on how God changed his life after being a alcoholic. But today he forgot everything. I ask everyone's prayers I have hope in God and waiting for him to convert him for his glory. It is agonising.
I've wondered in the past if St Monica prayed the Rosary for the conversion of her son St Augustine but if she was born in 330 AD the Rosary wasn't in use until St Dominic who was born in 1170 so I guess that answers that question.
I love St. Monica, an African holy woman of the ancient African Roman Church but I have to say as an African Catholic I am appalled that all the images of her were not just European but mostly northern European. Even North Africans were darker skinned than any of the pictures. Monica was of the ancient African Rite and kept those customs even when the Europeanisation of Catholicism was becoming more complete; she brought food offerings to the tombs of ancestors, embarrassing her hot shot newly Christian son with her "African ways." She was African ad Catholic and shows the beautiful practices of the church before it became a completely Eurocentric. To erase the history is to erase an important truth the church needs tooday; that the church is not just a white institution historically and that African catholicism and its rich practices, lost to war making and white supremacy are valuable and worth lifting up again. It would sure help bring and keep more African Americans in the Catholic church to know that its history is also African and its current expression can be that again as a gift to the universal church. This video makes me wish Monica's body had been sent back to North Africa where she wanted to die and too where she was headed. I understand though that Augustine must've wanted her near (oldest kid's perks), that and her tomb wouldv'e fallen to coming arab invasions as so many Christian and Jewish-and Muslim shrines have today.
