As someone who doesn't have anyone local that reloads and shoots this is simply the best and most educational resource available. Johnny is the man. Hey Johnny, a friend and I both shoot this bullet. We load to 2.250. I do not crimp, he puts a light factory crimp. We both use cfe223. My load is 23.5 with cci400, his load is 23.0 with cci 450. Honestly we can shoot each other's load and have exceptional results. We are both shooting regularly 1/2-5/8 groups. Now that said he deemed this bullet a unicorn bullet for the longest time until I let him borrow a pound of my cfe223 powder. He tried four or five different powders and could not get them to group. I let him borrow a pound of cfe223 and they immediately started giving excellent results. I have not tried any other powder but cfe223 and found that it worked and never changed. I'm shooting a 1/8 twist Barnes precision 18 inch barrel and he shoots a Hanson 1/8 twist 18 inch barrel. Lastly, I did a primer test and federal AR match did exceptionally well too. Your videos are awesome and in my opinion the best on TH-cam for reloading by far.

24gr with aa2230. OAL 2250 and it’s just awesome . Just an awesome all purpose awesome bullet. Second only to 62gr gold dot with the same charge. CFE 223 works well also. In a Jacketed BTHP the hollow point is actually a hollow space in there. A technique of manufacture that causes the center of gravity of the bullet to be more advantageous to accuracy.
Flat base bullets are useful at shorter distances in cartidge loads intended for hunting, shooting at shorter distances as they allow for more surface area for the expaning gases to push on and a better seal. I'm told this discourages throat errosion. The boat tails bullets I'm told come into importance at longer distances as they increased stability and decrease drag by shaping air flow over the bullet.
Shhhhhh! I have been using these for a while. I purposely developed a cartridge that would be 'good' in all my AR-15 and Bolt .223 Cal. All guns deliver one MOA or better and my Thomson Center Compass is 3/4 MOA or better as long as I don't overheat the barrel. Same load for all. I am using Benchmark 24.0 gr., CCI 400 primer, Federal or Lake City range pickup shells trimmed to 1.750" and bullet seated to the far edge of the cannelure (about 2.235 OAL). Use caution with my load. work up to it. I just received another 1500 and plan to order 3000 more soon. I would like to see these shot into ballistic jell. Great videos as always. I always learn something.
George... CCI 400s are pretty soft. Pierce easily, same is true with Rem 6 1/2... I'd strongly recommend Win WSR, Fed 205, Rem 7 1/2.. Tula match primers are REAL consistent.. Tough an resistant to AR doubling.
@@caleroby9483 After thousands of cartridges fired with the CCI 400 primers and not one pierced I feel safe with them. I am still using that load successfully and have given a few to others in my club to try in their rifles with the same grouping when the shooter is able to control his rifle. When I suspect the shooter, I ask to let me do the shooting and, what-do-ya-know, good groups. I have friends reloading with a work-up to my data and they are getting the best out of their rifles with the 24.0 grain of Benchmark. Remember that my goal was to better 1 MOA in all my rifles with the same load.
A Hornady representative answer my query regarding availability of this bullets by stating they are produced by Hornady on exclusive contract for Mid South Shooters supply.
I have been using this exact load for .223 for some time now and am very happy with the results. as a matter of fact, I just ordered another 500 62gr Hornady BTHP projectiles. I load 24.5gr charges with no crimp. Fantastic consistent results. Its strange that there is no data avail in the Hornady book.
Johnny, Once again you have a winner. For those that shoot competitively, these will do the Job at the 200 and 300-yard stages of National Match High Power as seen they will hold an "X" ring. and a competitor can switch out to the 75-77 grain bullets for the 600-yard line. Been working on TAC loads and have come with 24.8 grains. Its a solid 0.750" load at 3000 FPS. The best part is that 24.7, 24.8, 24.9 are all .750" loads. So this means I can run off a large batch on my Dillon and still have a solid sub moa load.
@@MyLonewolf25 Sorry for the slow reply. Yes standard deviation and extreme spread mean more at distance than maximum velocity. The catch is I don't shoot this load at long range. This particular load has a cone of fire that is smaller than the front half of a coyote at 300 yards. (which is this load primary purpose) I have another AR15 coupled with a 77 grain Nosler OTM for target shooting. That load shoots a lot tighter because low SD's was my primary goal

I just have standard 62 grains on the way with the penetrator I think. Just have 3031 and cci primers. Got good groups yesterday with just 55 grain bullets. Hornady and PMC brass. PMC held more powder before being compressed.
The reason hollowpoint is normally found in match bullets. They make a (Minor) turbulance that makes the bullet mor stable when you go out for long range

I got your message over on Patreon! I actually already ordered some more of these from Midsouth. I was ordering some 40gr Nosler BT's and some 40gr V-Max and decided to go ahead and add some of these 62's. So, thanks for the offer but I am covered for the time being! If you call Hornady I am sure you can get some data on components to use for the 62 grain bullets. The technical service guys at Hornady are very nice to get info from and they will help you one hundred percent. .
I would think that when you fire the hollow points air pressure holds the air in the hollow of it in place and that trapped air is what causes it to expand on impact the impact increases it's pressure and starts the expansion
John, when you get a flyer like that, get that piece of brass and set it aside for the scrap pile. Or mark it with a black magic marker on the head and load it again. This is what was going on with several guns of mine. I started to mark the brass and it was the same pieces doing it. This was in a bolt action. Being a Semi.... you might be seeing a bullet set back issue and that is what is causing the flier. Usually when the bullets get set back in an AR they get damaged and that would cause the flyers as well. Something to think about

This is the video I’ve been waiting for. I’m much more interested in the 62 gr bullet than the 55 gr version although I’ve been using the Armscor bullet out of ignorance more than anything else. I’ve been using H335 and Tac and, while not the most accurate, I enjoy them for plinking. I’ll be fascinated to see the results. Thanks!

I would love to see you shoot AA2520 and 8208 with this bullet. Im interested in these powders because they meter well in a progressive press. I am especially interested in 8208 because its less temp sensitive than AA2520.
Here we are 1/8/21. These are (as are most reloading components) hard to come by....like chicken lips! I've been loading these with 24.2 of Tac over a CCI #41 primers. I seat just barely to 2.250 with no crimp. One AR is a 1:9 twist and the other is 1:7 and both shoot the bullet great. I don't have many on the shelf....hope they come back soon!
I would love to see what 24.7 and 24.8 grains of H4895 would do. My guess is they would fall right in line with 24.6 and 24.9. Since I load on a progressive press, I look for a spread of at least 3 charge weights that shoot well enough for my needs. I pick the charge weight in the middle and fire up the Dillon. In my rifle 26.1 grains of AA2520 was the magic charge. My 20 inch chrome lined BCM shoots this load with no pressure signs and hold about MOA from the bench. My chrome lined (but hand lapped) Criterion will shoot this load in the .7's. Its a great practice bullet that will let me save my 77's for when it counts
Great channel! For the 6.5 Grendel you can use AR Comp, but you need to use 107 gr SMK (G1 BC .430) with 28.4 gr AR Comp, CCI small rifle magnum primers, hornady brass, out of a 20 inch Odin Works barrel gives me 2649 fps ave, SD 13--also no pressure signs. That's 3.1 mils out to 500 yards confirmed!!! I did not see pressure signs until 28.8 gr of AR comp in the 6.5 grendel.
In case you do not know this (and you should know ) a long distance match bullet is a combination of a BTHP (the HP is not a real HP but a product of how they are manufactured), perfectly concentric jacket and a good ogive design. Mix these up and you get a long range match bullet. For short range match bullets everything applies the same but for the boat tail which is not necessary for short distances used in in most bench rest competition since a bullet that stabilizes by 100 yards is required. There are match bullets (such as the 185 gr 308 cal Lapua that do not have a HP but a full jacket instead. and are also super accurate. This info is made available by Sierra and Hornady.
I did not know these were available. That is awesome. I have not played around with super heavy bullets but 62 grains and less I have quite a bit. My problem is I have so many different caliber rifles that I need to just stick with one and really work up a good load. Ever since you bought the Thompson Center Compass I went out and bought one in 30 - 06 and have been playing around with it. I really wish you would purchase one of those rifles and work up some load data on it. You know what would be awesome? If you decided to hook up with some of these gun manufacturers and see if you could put together a package that is reasonably priced and we could actually follow along with you on your reloading. Obviously your information gives us a good Baseline however everybody's rifle is different so what might work for you might not work so well for me especially if I have different Barrel or barrel lengths. Just something to consider a Johnny's reloading bench gun package or upper package or even just Barrel package :-)
it would be really great if at the end of the videos or in a follow up video you re-visit the charges that were most accurate and see if they are repeatable.
Taking weight out of the nose and moving further to the rear increases in flight stability and BC. That's why BTHPs tend to have higher BCs than fmjs of the same weight.
I load these with Tac and I'm no match competitor but they are very good bullets and even I get good groups. I've loaded these at 24.2 and I like the results. I'm shooting a 20" upper from Model1Sales. I put the lower together. I just really like this bullet. Right now its 9/14/2020 and these are scarce as hens teeth. Only have 200 on the shelf !
@@markgoostree6334 This is my favorite bullet. It accurate and cheap. I have great experience with TAC, AA2520, 8208XBR, W748, Power Pro Varmint, and AR Comp. This bullet works well with many powders. With todays conditions you don't have many powder choices since most is out of stock. It will also work with CFE223, N140, N135, and shooters world match rifle. All of these powders other than N133 and Power Pro Varmint work with 155 BTHP in my AR10 as well.
Has anyone seen the new Lee auto breech progressive press that will be available in April? I know Midsouth Shooter Supply has them available for back order, just wanting to see what people think about if it will be a practical press. It has 4 stations that will use the Lee breech lock system where you set the dies in the breech lock and will not have to reposition them when changing dies without having to change the entire die plate on top.
I'd be interested in seeing how these run with CFE 223, IMR 3031 would be cool to. And just because it's cheap and they have 62gr load data for 5.56 pressures, I'd really like to see Shooters World Tactical Rifle.
I've been using bulk hornady 62 gr spbt's with 24.5 grains H4895 as my go to hunting load for a while so was interested to see your loads shoot accurately in the same charge weight.
I'm just guessing here, but if its anything like the 75/77gr otm's, I've been told that the cavity in the front is to move weight more towards the center of the bullet for better rotational stability in flight. The mild expansion is just a positive.
Hey JRB, with the Hornady 62grbthp I have had good luck with h335, 8208 xbr and varget using LC brass and Win SR primers. With my AR the worst group I saw with these three powders was with h335 at 1.1 inches. SDs with xbr and varget were pretty good as well. For all my test strings I run a coal of 2.255. Just a little bit of info for you for when you continue with these bullets. Thanks for all the videos you produce its greatly apppreciated.
2019 update - Hornady has released this bullet in their Frontier ammo line Item Number FR300. Frontier 5.56 head stamped brass loaded by Lake City. I'm going to shoot some in my bolt guns and see how it does. Warning on the label to shoot only in 5.56 chambers.
I'm about to try these with TAC and see what I get. When I spoke with Hornady they mentioned this was going to become a permanent part of the line up. Also they said the load data on the website for the 60gr stuff I believe was the correct data. No OAL or BC provided though. It should be in the next edition of their manual according to the rep.
How did they do with Tac? Have any load data and velocities because the next time they are available I am going to pick some up? Btw if you still dont know the bc its .270 and OAL should probably be best from 2.250-2.260 unless you want to go deeper to line up the cannelure and crimp.
Never shot the 62gr. But I can say that in completely different guns I have had similar results as you across the hornady line. The big stuff (6.5 140's and mid weight 308's) seem to be truly match ready and the .224 stuff doesn't seem to knock my socks off. They're alright, but in the small stuff Sierra seems to be the right choice.

I have used these Hornady 62gr BTHP for a few years now sitting on top of CFE223. I have had very accurate groups with them. I would be interested to see these rounds sitting on some VitahVuori N133.
HP's put the centre of gravity further to the rear for better stability. Boat tails developed originally for machine guns to stabilize for long range. How about 70g Bergers??
I know this is a really old video, but since I can't find my goto powder (8208 XBR) I remembered this video and just ordered a jug of AR Comp. I'm really interested in seeing if I can can a sub MOA load at 3K fps with the 62 grn Hornady bthp. If I can't (as usual) accuracy trumps speed.
Late to the game here. Thumbs up. On the AR Comp, I would recommend going 1 or 2 charges higher and seeing what the groups do, and what the brass looks like. You found an accurate node at 2800 fps, and it looks like you may be closing in on another accurate node at 3000 fps. While it may or may not be worth the extra wear and tear on the brass (depends on the application), IMHO, it's worth knowing what all the potential loads are and where the max is actually at for each of my rifles. Flat base bullets are generally more accurate than boat tail bullets, but most people want a boat tail because they THINK it makes a big difference in wind drift at longer distances. Problem is that most shooters think 300 yards is a long distance. It's not. The only advantage for a boat tail on any .224 projectile under 69 gr is that it does make them a little easier to reload. It helps keep the bullet from falling over before you can get it up into the seating die.
Another great video Johnny! Just a data point for reference. In my experience M855 62gr "green tip" OAL Is 2.260" (Mag Length) and produces 2994 fps from my 16" barrel. Not to over simplify but given the burn rate of H4895, I would say your on the mark around 24.9gr
You wanted feedback, so I purchased 500 and laddered 120 with LVR in a CZ 527 22" barrel 1 in 12 twist. Rem 7 1/2 primers. LVR is not recommended for 223 in any manuals so do not copy this. Your experience may differ, and I am not responsible if you use LVR. Started at 26.0 grains and went to 27.2 grains at 2.255 OAL. Ten shot groups and the worst was 1.25" Best was at 27.0 grains with a .85 group at 3060 fps avg. SD was 19, and ES 42. The CZ has a skinny barrel, very tight chamber. Brass in this rifle does not grow in length, in fact it always loses .003 to .005 after firing. After firing the brass only needs neck sized (Lee collet) and it will fit a case gauge perfect. Switched to a Savage M11 26"heavy and used 27.0 grains and set OAL 2.255". This Savage has a very long lead and I can chamber these bullets touching the lands at 2.395". That is about .145" jump. Ten shots were 3178 fps avg, .358 GP, SD 11, ES 28. Did 4 more ten shot groups and none were bigger than .6". SDs ran up to 22. Primers were well rounded edges, no cratering, and no extractor bolt face marks. Think I have my bullet for 100 yard practice.
not sure if you have done a gear video but it would be cool to see what your preferences would be on brands and reasoning behind it as well as thought on like dillon gear and stuff like that. also maybe talk about your "dream setup" would be and knowing what you know now, what you would tell yourself when you first started
I have loaded over 1k of these, when powder was scarce I ended up with accurate 2460. I can normally shoot sub .. .75moa with 23.1 gr and cci 400 primers, seated at 2.255 without crimping
its great shooting bullet. I've been using CFE223 with them. 27.6g seems to be a good node with no presser signs. I'm getting about 2834 fps with a SD of 11 in a 16" barrel. I'm about to try AR Comp and 2520. looks like you beat me to the range with the AR Comp
I have been using AA2520 for a long time. It is a VERY ACCURATE powder. Just remember that when the weather gets warm, AA2520 is a temp sensitive powder. 26.1 grains with a 62 grain BTHP gave me 3050 fps in 88 degree temps with no pressure. 28 degree temps during deer season I lost 100 FPS.

I know this is a two year old video, but This bullet is hard to find right now. Its cheap and shoot well. The good news is that the Nosler 77 brain custom competition bullet is in stock (FOR NOW). They are not as cheap as the 62 grain Hornady BTHP but I believe its a better bullet. GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN.
I found 2800 fps for my Sierra 69gr works well no matter what powder I use. Mine rifle is Rem. 700 20" heavy barrel with Harrel's tuner/brake. Tuner/brakes really help factory barrels
Just a wee question Jonny I'm shooting 69gr smk .223 over 26.1gr cfe223 out of a cz527 22in 1/9 twist zero at 35yds but hitting 1in high at 200yds which would mean volicity is very high and they are grouping 1.25in at 200yds . Cromo not working and a shooters ballistic chart on internet gives 1.9in drop at the 200 with a volicity of 3000 fps and I shot three groups with same results. The brass looks great as do the primers I'm using Papua brass with rem 205 primes . Just like your thoughts on this as the volicity seems high to me
The best group I get is 1.05". Over all case length 2.45" 24.8 grains H335 CCI 400 1.05" CCI 41 opens up to 1.5" I shoot 10 rounds 2730 FPS I'm from New Mexico.
I load the 62gr fmj in mixed headstamp 5.56 cases, cci 400 primer, 24.0gr h335, 2.230” OAL, light crimp and usually get somewhere between 1”-1.5” groups. It’s my go to bulk load. I’m shooting out of a MK12 SPR build so 18” 1/7 twist.

Thor's Axe they'll work out at longer ranges too. I've shot 55gr bullets at 500 with a 2.75" group.

Been working on TAC loads and have come with 24.8 grains. Its a solid 0.750" load at 3000 FPS.
The best part is that 24.7, 24.8, 24.9 are all .750" loads. So this means I can run off a large batch on my Dillon and still have a solid sub moa load.

@@MyLonewolf25 Sorry for the slow reply. Yes standard deviation and extreme spread mean more at distance than maximum velocity. The catch is I don't shoot this load at long range. This particular load has a cone of fire that is smaller than the front half of a coyote at 300 yards. (which is this load primary purpose) I have another AR15 coupled with a 77 grain Nosler OTM for target shooting. That load shoots a lot tighter because low SD's was my primary goal

I like the 62 grain RMR bullets behind H335 and sometimes imr4198 out of my 11.5 pistol.
I just have standard 62 grains on the way with the penetrator I think. Just have 3031 and cci primers. Got good groups yesterday with just 55 grain bullets. Hornady and PMC brass. PMC held more powder before being compressed.
Hornady does list load data online for their 62gr fmjbt.

The Mk318 Mod 0 is loaded with a 62gr OTM BT bullet. The marines used that round in 5.56 several years ago.
Ive shot those for about a year with 25g of TAC with sub MOA at 100 yrds out of a wylde chamber with small magnum rifle primers
The reason hollowpoint is normally found in match bullets. They make a (Minor) turbulance that makes the bullet mor stable when you go out for long range

I would think that when you fire the hollow points air pressure holds the air in the hollow of it in place and that trapped air is what causes it to expand on impact the impact increases it's pressure and starts the expansion
John, when you get a flyer like that, get that piece of brass and set it aside for the scrap pile. Or mark it with a black magic marker on the head and load it again. This is what was going on with several guns of mine. I started to mark the brass and it was the same pieces doing it. This was in a bolt action. Being a Semi.... you might be seeing a bullet set back issue and that is what is causing the flier. Usually when the bullets get set back in an AR they get damaged and that would cause the flyers as well. Something to think about

Anchor Bait , I weighed 20 of out of the top of the box. Most were 62.1. None more than .4 different.
This is the video I’ve been waiting for. I’m much more interested in the 62 gr bullet than the 55 gr version although I’ve been using the Armscor bullet out of ignorance more than anything else. I’ve been using H335 and Tac and, while not the most accurate, I enjoy them for plinking. I’ll be fascinated to see the results. Thanks!
Nothing wrong with the Armscor bullets! I haven't had a chance to try them myself yet, but it sounds like you're using some good powders.

Here we are 1/8/21. These are (as are most reloading components) hard to come by....like chicken lips! I've been loading these with 24.2 of Tac over a CCI #41 primers. I seat just barely to 2.250 with no crimp. One AR is a 1:9 twist and the other is 1:7 and both shoot the bullet great. I don't have many on the shelf....hope they come back soon!

I would love to see what 24.7 and 24.8 grains of H4895 would do. My guess is they would fall right in line with 24.6 and 24.9. Since I load on a progressive press, I look for a spread of at least 3 charge weights that shoot well enough for my needs. I pick the charge weight in the middle and fire up the Dillon.
In my rifle 26.1 grains of AA2520 was the magic charge. My 20 inch chrome lined BCM shoots this load with no pressure signs and hold about MOA from the bench. My chrome lined (but hand lapped) Criterion will shoot this load in the .7's. Its a great practice bullet that will let me save my 77's for when it counts
Great channel! For the 6.5 Grendel you can use AR Comp, but you need to use 107 gr SMK (G1 BC .430) with 28.4 gr AR Comp, CCI small rifle magnum primers, hornady brass, out of a 20 inch Odin Works barrel gives me 2649 fps ave, SD 13--also no pressure signs. That's 3.1 mils out to 500 yards confirmed!!! I did not see pressure signs until 28.8 gr of AR comp in the 6.5 grendel.
My personal experience is that the HP 62 is slightly better than the 62 FMJ. Finding the sweet spot is a challenge. Appreciate your work!
In case you do not know this (and you should know ) a long distance match bullet is a combination of a BTHP (the HP is not a real HP but a product of how they are manufactured), perfectly concentric jacket and a good ogive design. Mix these up and you get a long range match bullet. For short range match bullets everything applies the same but for the boat tail which is not necessary for short distances used in in most bench rest competition since a bullet that stabilizes by 100 yards is required. There are match bullets (such as the 185 gr 308 cal Lapua that do not have a HP but a full jacket instead. and are also super accurate. This info is made available by Sierra and Hornady.

I did not know these were available. That is awesome. I have not played around with super heavy bullets but 62 grains and less I have quite a bit. My problem is I have so many different caliber rifles that I need to just stick with one and really work up a good load. Ever since you bought the Thompson Center Compass I went out and bought one in 30 - 06 and have been playing around with it. I really wish you would purchase one of those rifles and work up some load data on it. You know what would be awesome? If you decided to hook up with some of these gun manufacturers and see if you could put together a package that is reasonably priced and we could actually follow along with you on your reloading. Obviously your information gives us a good Baseline however everybody's rifle is different so what might work for you might not work so well for me especially if I have different Barrel or barrel lengths. Just something to consider a Johnny's reloading bench gun package or upper package or even just Barrel package :-)

Taking weight out of the nose and moving further to the rear increases in flight stability and BC. That's why BTHPs tend to have higher BCs than fmjs of the same weight.
Why not TAC? I've hear that TAC really shines with 62 gr. yo 77 gr. bullets.
I load these with Tac and I'm no match competitor but they are very good bullets and even I get good groups. I've loaded these at 24.2 and I like the results. I'm shooting a 20" upper from Model1Sales. I put the lower together. I just really like this bullet. Right now its 9/14/2020 and these are scarce as hens teeth. Only have 200 on the shelf !
@@markgoostree6334 This is my favorite bullet. It accurate and cheap. I have great experience with TAC, AA2520, 8208XBR, W748, Power Pro Varmint, and AR Comp.
This bullet works well with many powders. With todays conditions you don't have many powder choices since most is out of stock. It will also work with CFE223, N140, N135, and shooters world match rifle. All of these powders other than N133 and Power Pro Varmint work with 155 BTHP in my AR10 as well.

Has anyone seen the new Lee auto breech progressive press that will be available in April? I know Midsouth Shooter Supply has them available for back order, just wanting to see what people think about if it will be a practical press. It has 4 stations that will use the Lee breech lock system where you set the dies in the breech lock and will not have to reposition them when changing dies without having to change the entire die plate on top.
I’m gonna try some of these out pretty soon. Midsouth usually carries the Del-Ton parts that I like so I can get some of these bullets as well.

I’ve loaded with CFE223 settled on 27.0 grains (223 listed max) at 2.245 OAL, and Shooters World is my favorite at 25gr (.5gr under 556 max) same OAL

I've been using bulk hornady 62 gr spbt's with 24.5 grains H4895 as my go to hunting load for a while so was interested to see your loads shoot accurately in the same charge weight.

I'm just guessing here, but if its anything like the 75/77gr otm's, I've been told that the cavity in the front is to move weight more towards the center of the bullet for better rotational stability in flight. The mild expansion is just a positive.
Hey JRB, with the Hornady 62grbthp I have had good luck with h335, 8208 xbr and varget using LC brass and Win SR primers. With my AR the worst group I saw with these three powders was with h335 at 1.1 inches. SDs with xbr and varget were pretty good as well. For all my test strings I run a coal of 2.255. Just a little bit of info for you for when you continue with these bullets. Thanks for all the videos you produce its greatly apppreciated.
2019 update - Hornady has released this bullet in their Frontier ammo line Item Number FR300. Frontier 5.56 head stamped brass loaded by Lake City. I'm going to shoot some in my bolt guns and see how it does. Warning on the label to shoot only in 5.56 chambers.
I'm about to try these with TAC and see what I get. When I spoke with Hornady they mentioned this was going to become a permanent part of the line up. Also they said the load data on the website for the 60gr stuff I believe was the correct data. No OAL or BC provided though. It should be in the next edition of their manual according to the rep.
How did they do with Tac? Have any load data and velocities because the next time they are available I am going to pick some up? Btw if you still dont know the bc its .270 and OAL should probably be best from 2.250-2.260 unless you want to go deeper to line up the cannelure and crimp.

Never shot the 62gr. But I can say that in completely different guns I have had similar results as you across the hornady line. The big stuff (6.5 140's and mid weight 308's) seem to be truly match ready and the .224 stuff doesn't seem to knock my socks off. They're alright, but in the small stuff Sierra seems to be the right choice.

I have used these Hornady 62gr BTHP for a few years now sitting on top of CFE223. I have had very accurate groups with them. I would be interested to see these rounds sitting on some VitahVuori N133.

HP's put the centre of gravity further to the rear for better stability. Boat tails developed originally for machine guns to stabilize for long range. How about 70g Bergers??

I have had great luck with TAC. Settled on 25.5 grs. Also had some luck with 26.5 CFE 223, TAC seemed more reliable in more rifles.

69gr Nosler's with Varget vs. AR Comp... BTW I have seen data that shows AR comp to be about 1/2 as sensitive to temperature variation than Varget?
Late to the game here. Thumbs up. On the AR Comp, I would recommend going 1 or 2 charges higher and seeing what the groups do, and what the brass looks like. You found an accurate node at 2800 fps, and it looks like you may be closing in on another accurate node at 3000 fps. While it may or may not be worth the extra wear and tear on the brass (depends on the application), IMHO, it's worth knowing what all the potential loads are and where the max is actually at for each of my rifles.
Flat base bullets are generally more accurate than boat tail bullets, but most people want a boat tail because they THINK it makes a big difference in wind drift at longer distances. Problem is that most shooters think 300 yards is a long distance. It's not. The only advantage for a boat tail on any .224 projectile under 69 gr is that it does make them a little easier to reload. It helps keep the bullet from falling over before you can get it up into the seating die.
Another great video Johnny! Just a data point for reference. In my experience M855 62gr "green tip" OAL Is 2.260" (Mag Length) and produces 2994 fps from my 16" barrel. Not to over simplify but given the burn rate of H4895, I would say your on the mark around 24.9gr
You wanted feedback, so I purchased 500 and laddered 120 with LVR in a CZ 527 22" barrel 1 in 12 twist. Rem 7 1/2 primers. LVR is not recommended for 223 in any manuals so do not copy this. Your experience may differ, and I am not responsible if you use LVR.
Started at 26.0 grains and went to 27.2 grains at 2.255 OAL. Ten shot groups and the worst was 1.25" Best was at 27.0 grains with a .85 group at 3060 fps avg. SD was 19, and ES 42. The CZ has a skinny barrel, very tight chamber. Brass in this rifle does not grow in length, in fact it always loses .003 to .005 after firing. After firing the brass only needs neck sized (Lee collet) and it will fit a case gauge perfect. Switched to a Savage M11 26"heavy and used 27.0 grains and set OAL 2.255". This Savage has a very long lead and I can chamber these bullets touching the lands at 2.395". That is about .145" jump. Ten shots were 3178 fps avg, .358 GP, SD 11, ES 28. Did 4 more ten shot groups and none were bigger than .6". SDs ran up to 22. Primers were well rounded edges, no cratering, and no extractor bolt face marks. Think I have my bullet for 100 yard practice.
not sure if you have done a gear video but it would be cool to see what your preferences would be on brands and reasoning behind it as well as thought on like dillon gear and stuff like that. also maybe talk about your "dream setup" would be and knowing what you know now, what you would tell yourself when you first started

I just loaded ar comp and cfe. Ar comp gave about 1- 1.5 moa cfe wasn't good for me... Trying xbr, and varget now.
its great shooting bullet. I've been using CFE223 with them. 27.6g seems to be a good node with no presser signs. I'm getting about 2834 fps with a SD of 11 in a 16" barrel. I'm about to try AR Comp and 2520. looks like you beat me to the range with the AR Comp

I have been using AA2520 for a long time. It is a VERY ACCURATE powder. Just remember that when the weather gets warm, AA2520 is a temp sensitive powder. 26.1 grains with a 62 grain BTHP gave me 3050 fps in 88 degree temps with no pressure. 28 degree temps during deer season I lost 100 FPS.

I know this is a two year old video, but This bullet is hard to find right now. Its cheap and shoot well.
The good news is that the Nosler 77 brain custom competition bullet is in stock (FOR NOW). They are not as cheap as the 62 grain Hornady BTHP but I believe its a better bullet. GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN.

I found 2800 fps for my Sierra 69gr works well no matter what powder I use.
Mine rifle is Rem. 700 20" heavy barrel with Harrel's tuner/brake.
Tuner/brakes really help factory barrels
They list 24.6 as max for ar comp.

Just a wee question Jonny I'm shooting 69gr smk .223 over 26.1gr cfe223 out of a cz527 22in 1/9 twist zero at 35yds but hitting 1in high at 200yds which would mean volicity is very high and they are grouping 1.25in at 200yds . Cromo not working and a shooters ballistic chart on internet gives 1.9in drop at the 200 with a volicity of 3000 fps and I shot three groups with same results. The brass looks great as do the primers I'm using Papua brass with rem 205 primes . Just like your thoughts on this as the volicity seems high to me

I load the 62gr fmj in mixed headstamp 5.56 cases, cci 400 primer, 24.0gr h335, 2.230” OAL, light crimp and usually get somewhere between 1”-1.5” groups. It’s my go to bulk load.
I’m shooting out of a MK12 SPR build so 18” 1/7 twist.
