My mom always comments when my legs, arms, etc. start looking hairy. She acts all weird about it like it's some crazy crime. Hair on women needs to be normalized! And parents shouldn't shame their kids for it.
Tell her, that she gave you that beautiful body and you don't want to change it. 😊

Tell your mother to pay for laser treatments for you if hair bothers her that much. Also tell her it’s her fault or your father’s fault if you are as hairy as she says you are. Hairiness is genetically inherited from one or both parents, make her feel like shit for making those hair comments to you.
I haven’t shaved my legs since I was 15 because I frankly don’t give a damn what people think, and when I tell my male friends and boyfriends I don’t shave, they always exclaim, “neither do I!”
Ha. They are older men then because young men do shave. Just look at the smooth arms and legs on the beech. Or should that be beach? I always get that wrong.

I shave my legs because when the wind touch me hairy legs it feels like spiders are crawling up my legs,and I end up swatting at my legs thinking I'm killing a bug

@@alicjaradoszewska4249 the point is not to be super hairy or go against hairlessness, it’s to do what YOU like. that includes maybe having armpit hair but no leg hair or 😼 hair but no hair anywhere else. it’s all about choosing. maybe that choice is no hair at all or hair everywhere but the face but it doesn’t change that they’re normalizing body hair and most importantly, being happy within themselves because they chose that look.

I want to see this; who was the lunatic that thought clothes without pockets were a good idea?
Some people suggest it required women to carry purses which made them vulnerable to theives, encouraging them not to go out without a chaperone.
Clothes started out with no pockets. (People carried their stuff in pouches attached to their belt) So the origin of the pocket would make more sense.

I have always noticed that attractive male actors tend to shave several areas for ‘sexy’ scenes. Sean Connery had a large amount of body hair, which I hadn’t really noticed, until I rewatched one of his ‘Bond’ movies (You Only Live Twice). He was going to get a massage, so his legs were bare...... uhm.....whoa that was a lot of very dark hair!!

The only hair removal trend that bugs me is the modern idea that women need to remove ALL their pubic hair and look like prepubescent girls or else they are gross, regardless of the fact that having some pubic hair actually protects that area. Grooming, fine, keep it under control lol, but being totally bare is just a little too creepy for me
Exactly! I guess its also because of porn. My ex bf 24years (virgin), never seen a vagina live in front of him before, wanted me to shave it all.... because he likes it that way. Excuse me?? So how does he know what he likes before actually having had sex? Well, he got used to "naked" vaginas because of porn.

Yeah, and the fact that shaving or waxing pubic hair very often leads to ingrown hairs, skin infections, razor rash, lacerations, and increases the likelihood of getting certain STI's. Plus, it's all prickly one or two days afterward. You can't wax everyday, so your pubic area is usually prickly as hell. You could shave everyday, but that just makes the razor rash worse. So, yeah... red, inflamed, bumpy, and prickly pubic areas aren't very fun. If people want less hair there, the best thing to do is trim it.

I feel like I’ve wasted so many hours of my life shaving, waxing, epilating, and plucking. I wish that hair follicles would just give up growing hair after a certain number of plucks.
Laser hair removal is the bomb. Permanent solution.

That seems to be the case exactly with the hair you don't want gone totally, like eyebrows, haha. The women from the thin eyebrow era say it stopped growing back as they got older. My ballet teacher told us not to pluck them too much for this reason. My eyebrows seem to be falling out all on their own though. Which is weird as I have plenty of strong hairs elsewhere that is too uncomfortable to remove as it grows back under the skin.
Having hairy legs is very beneficial for swatting mosquitos that get tangled up in the hairs before getting a chance to bite. I urge all women to invest in growing hairy legs for their health & safety.
God made sure we grow leg hair for a reason , i still shave but i shave once a week , now i do check my facial hair daily for embarrassment but thats the only thing i really really care about

My mom makes fun of me when she sees my armpits are hairy and starts telling other people about it

during the pandemia i did and experiment and didn't shave for 4 months, it was a nice experiment to break my aversion for hair in the armpit. But my mom also din't have a nice time looking at it, she made sure to tell me how disgust she was everytime, and in the other way, my older brother did not care at all. I think it's very hard for some woman to realize their are ashamed of their bodies, because other people told them to be.
My mother and sister are very judgemental. Because I grew up in a judgemental environment I make sure to do anything to not look weird and to look desirable. But when I don't have to shave my armpits they make sure to always say that they are disgusting. I find my family disgusting and I hope I will be able to leave soon

Though in Europe they don't shave their armpits, well I know in Poland they don't, as my mom was born there and never once shaved her pits lol

Sadly, this covers some of the history of "when" women shaved their legs and underarms, but absolutely not the "why" which I was looking for. If I remember correctly underarm hair was requested to be shaved on actresses of Hollywood in the first movies by the censorship which viewed women's hair as sexually explicit. This is just an example of the why, women hair = women sexuality = forbidden / gross.
A parallel example would be nipples : Men nipples where also banned from the screens and the beaches until the 30's when some men took their freedom without asking, and it slowly became mainstream...
I was hoping for a bit of chronology and quotes about why women's hair is considered gross while men's hair is almost all the time valued, and in the worst cases, tolerated.
It says flat out about fashion trends as the why.
Trends are always weird and irrational.
I was thinking about this very thing. For a very long time women has been made to feel ashamed of our private parts. It has been treated as something dirty that needed to be hidden. Female body hair used to be seen as something private and sexual. These days the allure of the hair is pretty much gone but the shame remains, fuel by economic interestests.

@@ChristmasCarolyn Actually, trends usually aren't irrational at all, they just may be hard to explain without a deeper exploration of the time, place, and subject matter. That's what we are complaining wasn't done, the reasons behind the trend weren't really teased out in this video.
My thing is...women were wearing stockings to make their legs seem smoother, so there was already a 'need' for smooth legs on women even before the war broke out. Where did this need come from? What was it about women's legs specifically that needed them to either be covered and unseen or entirely naked when exposed?
Pretty sure women were also wearing stockings for warmth. These days, too, even the thinnest nylons can keep your legs just that little bit warmer. At least that's why I like to wear them.
To answer your question, though: From all I know, apart from the things mentioned in this video, just some really dumb beauty standards made up by advertisers who apparently hate women. Add to that lots of shaming over the tiniest little 'flaw' on your body and a decidedly unhealthy dose of photoshop and you end up where we are today. Many women are made to believe that looking as unnatural as possible is what the opposite sex prefers and somehow, that idea has stuck with us. Similar things apply on the weight front, too. I mean, historically speaking, heavy-set women used to be considered more beautiful as being rounder indicated both health and wealth. Most guys back then wouldn't have even so much as glanced at a skinny woman.
In fact, it's because they were underwear.
The existence of the garment dates from the 1500s, in fact, the first weaving machines were to create these garments. The reason, easy. Women on a large scale wore skirts, rich or poor, it did not matter.
That left as a consequence that the legs were exposed to the weather, therefore they were used as underwear. In as much, to your question of why they became standard of beauty, then simple, it is underwear.
The legs became a symbol of beauty and a standard thanks to this, a private / intimate garment that evoked, like all underwear, a symbolism of intimacy. For that reason, the sexy pictures of the period, was with respect to this garment, it was underwear. Follow the logic of the current lingerie, only being more 'modest', as it was an intimate garment that revealed, did not expose any genital. From there to have had that boom of sexapell
So, when they fell into disuse, the most "rational" evolution within the logic, was the shaved legs. It was the loss of use of the garment, but it kept all the weight of intimacy, taboo, "modest" sexuality.
I read this interesting theory somewhere that it became popular because women appeared younger not having hair on their legs.
Nerdicaful Seems like almost all of social femininity is connected to a type of leisure and prioritizing beauty to represent the success of a country. Like... the more successful a nation is, the more the men want the women to showcase that success in their very bodies by having the women preoccupy their time with shallow pursuits where the unspoken goal is to make themselves look as different from their male counterparts as possible - we call it beatification.
I think it's because body hair means sexuality, puberty. And women sexuality was and still is seen as a taboo
Some razor manufacturers make women's razors in pastel colors, like pink. And they cost more than the men's version, which is essentially the exact same product, just packaged differently.
Then there's the waxing issue. Grown women are made to believe that their "lower regions" need to have a more youthful appearance.
I thought the 'lower regions' needed to be shaved because it was more sanitary. This is the point where I'd add anecdotal evidence... but I *really* don't want to, and I'm sure you don't want me to either.
(I think the razor thing's dumb though. + electric razors, IMO, are better and you don't need to replace the blade as often).
@@noelstar1456 no, it has nothing to do with being more "sanitary." In fact, not having hair there leaves one open to skin infections, especially if the method of hair removal is either shaving (that can cut skin) or waxing (which leaves hair follicles open to germs). Even with depilatories, the lack of hair can lend to chafing and irritation that hair protects from happening.
I don't buy the 'women's ' razors. Simple
Actually, women's razors ARE manufactured differently. Leg hair has a different texture from facial hair. And it lays at a different angle as well. You need to use different razors for each. Or choose a razor that's somewhere in between the two designs. It won't work as efficiently as either of the specialized razors, but it gets the job done and is inexpensive. That's how Dollar Shave Club does it, and it's also why they include a lot of replacement razor heads. I have to replace a head every time I shave my legs.
@@AtarahDerek I didn't notice any difference between mine and my husbands razors, except than his is sharp longer. Upon that discovery I stopped buying any razors for ladies and just use his :)

When I was in 5th grade other girls had started waxing and one frowned at me for not doing that like it was the norm that I SHOULD follow. Guess what bruh Im an adult and I can do whatever the hell I want, never shving my legs again
Shaving takes too long and it just grows back so I don’t even bother unless it’s a important like a wedding of someone I care about

@@mkm1015 there are long-term problems associated with not bathing or cleaning your teeth, I can't think of any relating to hair growth.
So if you show up at my wedding with hairy legs it's a subtle sign you don't really care about me. I have to start paying attention to this kind of detail. I'm missing a lot of social cues...

This is really interesting, but still doesn't really answer the question of why women are expected to be hairless in the first place. If the answer is 'women started wearing shorter clothing and couldn't wear pantyhose', you'd think that as men started wearing shorts, they would have started shaving their legs as well. In Ancient Rome, hairlessness was already a symbol of status for women, so clearly there's some other origins for this beauty standard.
I don't know about ancient Rome but at least I think in America man weren't involved in the trend because of marketing. The ads were designed for women. They could target man but they were too busy working in factories or fighting the war. It wouldn't work, they couldn't care less about body hair.
However most women were housekeepers and had time to worry about their appearance, so they were more vulnerable to this kind of manipulation from companies making them feel inadequate trying to sell their products. Over time this became the norm and currently we just keep giving them our money for such things.
I think its just men dominance over the world. who ever invented the idea of hair removal spread that idea and it was accepted/liked by society.

@@davidcervantes9336 I had a boyfriend in Panama (Bocas del Toro) who asked me to stop shaving my legs. At another point I had a boyfriend in Costa Rica who asked me not to shave my legs. I lived in a rural mountain area. Also some women asked my why I shaved my legs. When I told them that we think that it is sort of masculine they said that thought it was prettier with hair.
I hate shaving anything, it feels itchy. I hate bra too, its itchy.

It's probably an European or American thing...in West Africa, nobody cares about hairy legs. It is even considered quite cute like light side burns on a woman. You guys have weird stuff...
It depends my dude. Maybe women in western Africa don't grow as much hair as the European women do. Also, perhaps body hair is more visible in White skin compared to Black skin, so this could be the reason.
I have to say though as a southern European, that we have many women who have A LOT of body hair. Some of them nearly have mustaches. So I am guessing this might play a role
Pit S. I can assure you women in wester Africa grow more hair than European women do this whole notion of shaving legs just derived from colonial thought hence why the person who commented above is very confused by this . Also hair is thinker and more visible on darker skin.

I'd have to correct you, shaving and waxing is and was very common in the middle east, africa (especially in the north) the sugaring method is the most practised and it's inhereted from travelling backwards Thousands of years, techniques like running a lit candle all over to slightly burn the excess hair, threading, plucking, waxing and plenty of other ways to remove unwanted hair, perhaps the story is diffrent for America and Europe (despite proof from ancient times about practicing hair removal) all around the world including Asia, the middle east and Africa, even there people have practiced it too, and they were way more meticulous about it, it wasn't forced upon them, it was standards that they've created for themselves especially women because it made them feel more feminine and softer, others didn't care much and that's fine too. What I want to clarify is that it wasn't badly intended or with some sort of evil plan to control women's bodies it's simply a choice & a preference, also an evolvement moving towards a more civilized world. Hair can be itchy, retain odors and moisture, harbor yeast/ bacteria and it could be unpleasant especially for those who have a lot of it, so the easiest way to get the soft touch is to simply remove it, it's like humans naturally getting dirty but it doesn't mean that dirt doesn't require care just because it's natural, sometimes less is better. Trimming the hair is also an option instead of fully shaving it or leaving it bushy, plus, Ever since humans started wearing clothes, body hair gradually decreased because it doesn't serve much.
Because society can't accept we have hair too.

I've been a physical laborer all my life and I went through several years wear I chemically removed body hair... it felt great! ... if I had the money I would probably do that again. "Hair is a constant substance pressing against your body desensitizing it" - Wrong, *our bodies are so complex and hair is mostly necessary,* it defends us from sun (which isn't a small thing to do), and from diseases (in other parts). Surely sometimes, when having a big risk for an injury, it's better to remove hair, but you don't see tiger without any hair just because they got hurt, the hair protects them mostly, and that's why it's there.
I shave because I hate how my body feel when covered in body hair, especially when I feel sticky and sweaty during a hot day. I always liked my soft smooth skin.
I as a men do not like having hairy hair at my body. First I sweat as hell and stinks. It is itchy to the extreme and literally my whole body was itchy and was scratching everywhere on my body like a suffering from epilipxia. I come from a tropical place like Puerto Rico that is hot that can range 90 ° C or 100 C or More. So can guess how much sweat can get from my hot tropical caribean island. Also, I hate that my body hair grow fast after I shave . Just one week my whole body is cover by hair. Weirdly my big sister prefer that have a beard because it make look like more handsome for her.

I shave everything except my eyebrows. My underarms stopped growing hair,wish the rest would follow. I'll never have a beard again,made me look old.

I like the gender norm discussions! How about we talk about cultural differences relating to appropriate dress? For example, in Ghana, no one bats an eye when a woman exposes her breasts to feed her child because that's what they're there for! But by no means should a woman expose her belly button or waist beads in public! I think learning about differences like this would be interesting!

@@myheartwillstopinjoy8142 i have never seen someone get bullied for having hair unless it was unwanted facial hair like a unibrow or mustache. You have to have a gross amount of body hair to get bullied for it.
I’m so irritated. My underarms get so irritated when I shave them, that I just had them waxed. At the same time I just saw a young lady wearing a sleeveless shirt and she wasn’t shaved. I was jealous. But society and Gillette taught me it doesn’t look right. At 53 it’s hard to change your thinking on that type of beauty. But I did think, good for her.

KJR Channel Well, they were just waxed last week, so seems fine so far. 👍
you may try laser or diodo depilation. For me it was a miracle, because I suffered so much with wax and razor. It seems more expensive, but in only 5-6 sessions (the normal pack they offer) you get rid of 80% of the hair. And if you are over 30 is easier, because your hormons are less crazy and you don´t generate as much hair.
I started not shaving a few years ago (I only shave when I wear strapless tops, which isn't that often, even in summer) and found that I don't sweat as much anymore. My deodorant seems to stick to the hairs much better, or maybe the razor irritates my sweat glands, who knows.
The hygiene argument is a myth. I wash my pits thoroughly with soap and water every day (sometimes more than once) so I really don't see why it would be unhygienic. I don't shave my head either and that hair is right by my face, so I don't really get the logic.
I just wish our society was at a level where we could show off body hair and not be seen as being unkempt, not feminine or unprofessional.
Yeah I tried not shaving my pits when I was younger. That or I forgot to do it. My sister though complained to our mom that I needed to get rid of the tarantulas I was growing.
It should be perfectly accepted wether a person wants to shave or not. We just need to remember that hair is normal :)
I quit shaving at the start of the pandemic when silly things (like shaving my legs and dying my hair) became obvious to me.
As a women, I don’t like the feeling of hair on my underarms so I actually like shaving my underarms. The hair is kind of annoying especially when I get sweaty

Same here plus it's so much easier to apply deodorant with no underarm hair. Shaving legs is a other story for me though. I keep getting razor bumps :/ luckily my hubby doesn't care about leg hair so i seldom shave them 😊

I start off nice and gentle on one leg, then when I get to the other leg, I'm so sick of shaving that I'm hacking at my leg trying to get it done leaving cuts. My back hurts like a 90 yr olds back afterwards. It's not pretty and it ain't fun.

Where I'm from, leg shaving isn't a thing. I came across the term during my teen years when I was an avid reader of Wattpad stories. It's really interesting to realize how different beauty standards are from society to society. Now the question is, if I happen to relocate would I have to adopt their norms?
Hahaaa, good old Wattpad! Depending on where you go, it might be more or less the norm to shave. But that decision is still yours! I've lived in the US and Germany, and I think the EU in general might be more accepting but then again the US is very varied :)

I stopped caring about shaving a few months ago. It feels so good to just let go of it haha. I feel so beautiful and feminine when I let my hair grow. But I’ll think I’ll keep a razor around because I like to shave for very special events. I just do what feels good to me now when it comes to shaving and it’s great.

I stopped shaving all of my body hair a few years ago. I’ve got hairy pits, legs, and a furry pubic area. Guys seem just as interested in me as when I was smooth 😁

Really is just "to each their own." I like the feelings of shaved legs and I have an issue with pretty smelly sweat which is worse if I skip shaving for longer than a week. At the same time I wouldnt bat an eye at another woman not shaving any part of her body or a man being hairless because what does it have to do with me?

I'm actually sort of surprised by how many comments make it sound as if shaving underarm hair is a MUST. Sure, I've done it a couple of times (only because it feels nice and smooth) but I see more women not shave them here in Germany than I see those who do. I've never even heard about "smelly underarm hair" until a couple of moments ago o.O
Underarm and pubic hair smell is actually attractive to the opposite sex. The trick is to wash the area with water daily to make sure the pheromones don’t break down and go ‘stale’
I think it's a common stereotype in the UK that German women are hairy than British women. I think it's cool that it's less taboo there, but growing up on the 80s/90s here it was often seen as a bad thing/used as a punchline. Those wacky Germans, not body-shaming their women into oblivion! 🤦♀️😳
(I mention 80s/90s because the stereotype may have diminished since then. It's much less visible in our media at least now. Can't think of the last time I heard anyone mention it. So 🤞 hopefully we've improved on that front)

I'm not married yet, but when I am I'm making my husband take me on LOONG drives. I prefer looking out the window and picking the music (yes, I'm one of those evil women that pick the music) while annoying whoever's driving with long rants. It is how it is.
LOL When my wife and I drive together, usually she drives because 9/10 we take her car. It is set up for her. Her seat settings, her mirror settings, her radio settings (I've slipped one or two of mine in there) Bluetooth for her phone etc. I navigate, I nap and in general enjoy being chauffeured around. After many years of driving a semi all around the US, someone else can drive for a change. She likes driving and I am perfectly willing to let her. When she didn't like driving, then I drove, now she does. I have gotten many looks and even a few questions about it.

I think women put a lot of pressure on themselves with what they think is expected of them. I realized after I got married that my husband really didn't care if I shaved my legs or not, so I only shave when I feel like it. That amounts to on occasion in the summer and not much at all in the winter when I am wearing long pants. Just do what is comfortable. And if someone gives you a hard time about it, just tell them they're being shallow. (I have heard stories about women being corrected by strangers in public for not shaving. How rude!)

Interestingly, male road cyclists shave their legs, ostensibly to make treating road rash after a crash easier (cleaning, as well as applying and removing bandages.) You would be hard pressed to find a serious cyclist who doesn’t shave his legs, although these days it’s probably more about fashion. I say this because these same cyclists don’t shave their arms, which also get abraded in a crash.
I never knew this! Although I am a girl you rode her first two wheeler bike head first into a fence...so I hardly have the concerns of a serious cyclist. Thanks for sharing!
I think is the norm in any sport. Many of my classmates did one sport or another (swimming, football, etc) and all of them shaved. They said they felt cleaner and didn´t sweat so much
My husband shaves his legs for this reason, it really does help clean up after roadrash because you dont have to pick hairs out of it. Also the hair dosnt grip on the road and make it pull off even more skin that way.
Same goes for swimmers, but as with cyclists, it's also to obtain a faster speed. Aerodynamics and all that.

I used to shave my legs & pits. In fact, I distinctly remember when I turned 14 (in 1970) & was allowed to shave and to wear stockings & a garter belt. I felt so grown up! Fast forward to my 40s, and one day, I just decided "What the hell? My (second) husband thinks unshaven me is just fine, so why bother?" Nearly 25 years not shaving! It helps that I have very minimal, light colored body hair to begin with . . . Such freedom and no more stubble, razor burn, irritation or cuts! I stay fastidiously clean in the pit area and deodorize, no worries there. It really is very liberating!

Why accept only men shaving their faces when you can convince women to shave way more surface area? You sell at least double the razors if you get them to buy in.

IF they surveyed a million women over thirty - Not teenagers or twenty-somethings- but just regular Women over thirty and asked them how often they shaved or removed hair- Would anyone actually admit they shave their hair that often. Would any woman over thirty shame any other woman for having hairy legs- I wouldn't- I've never had my pubic area waxed off but beauty magazines, TV programs and Ads all make out women are hairless down there 24/7, sometimes in the summer sure- when you get a free day off to go to the beach you shave the darker hair on your legs- but that is only for the conditioned internalized shame of the hairy legginess- but you know for a fact no one gives a rats arse. God help the individual who makes a comment that my legs were hair, my arm pits fuzzy or a few pubes escaped my swimsuit. I think we need to highlight that shaving for women isn't really a thing- you can do it or not do it, but don't make it a "thing"- WE set up young people to feel gross and ashamed of their bodies and then when we grow out of that and realize no one cared and all that time spent worried about how other people see you was just wasted time and ate away at your self-confidence.
I work in Heath care- EVERY single woman has apologized for not being hairless when you have to assess a sprained ankle- the number of teenagers who come in with infections and abscesses from shaving is too numerous to count- you give them quick health advice that the hair that is there is meant to be there for a reason- but they all know better- I'm sure that pustulant draining wound is super sexy over a tad of fuzziness.

Idk about other people, but at least for the crotch area, I tried once but I couldn't stand the itchiness and constant discomfort. Never again. Not even trimming it was remotely bearable. I guess I have sensitive skin or something.
Interestingly, I went to the gynecologist recently and while she was doing a procedure she kept asking me why I didn't shave or trim my pubic hair, like it was a nuisance to her (lol). "You don't even cut it shorter? Not even a little? " I couldn't see her face because of the sheet but I could hear the incredulity in her voice. In the end she trimmed it because it was "in the way" and I felt betrayed a little.

As a man I very much like women's shaved legs. I like their legs anyway but more so when they're shaved. However, I firmly believe that's their choice whether or not to shave, I understand if they don't want to, it is a lot of trouble to go through.

I dont shave. I have a waxer but I am "allergic" to the sun so no one really sees it. I just personally prefer the feel. I'm also pretty poor so I dont get to wax often. I just do it for me and it's a luxury:)

I lost my give a damn for shaving 2 years ago. Now I enjoy feeling the breeze on my hairy legs lol plus i save money not buying razors and shave creams. Saved time and water too. Less chemicals going into the water also. While I was at it I chucked the dangerous deodorants and now make my own.

Second of all, I never claimed others don't experience it. You're right that pressure is itself not a gendered thing, I agree with you there, but that doesn't mean it's EQUAL. Groups experience different things, as do individuals within those groups.
But you know, the fact that you say you'd "trade any day" tells me you don't believe it's equal either...it seems you believe you have the worse end of the stick if anything.
Are you _sure_ that isn't a little self-absorbed (in the way you described)? Just because you "don't vocalise them or moan about them" doesn't mean you just "got over it" - it sounds to me like it still bothers you but you're just pushing it down.
And why would you be ignoring and suppressing it if not...because of pressure and shame? It's not _complaining_ to openly talk about and deconstruct things, and even complaining itself can be productive if it's to vent emotions as long as it isn't consuming you.
And if none of this was true and it wasn't bothering you and you were doing fine, why would you want to trade?
How would you know they don't have it worse, if you're really fine about it and they aren't?

If you haven't experienced what it's like on the other end, there's no way to truly compare and know for certain, and no one can experience what it's like to live in everyone's shoes; but in my experience the closest you can get to that is...listening to people, really listening to them and trying to understand them, without assuming anything beforehand/being dismissive of things they're trying to say.
In any case...I believe we SHOULD be having these conversations, we should be acknowledging and discussing these things so we can better understand one another, help others and make improvements overall. I've learnt a LOT I'd never have known or ever thought about this way, and the more and more I've looked into things with others, the deeper I've found things to go - like how OP said "it's crazy how strong of an influence society has on our perceptions" - that's something I only realised more and more the more I talked about it with people.
I don't see any reason to be against this, especially in such a hostile way, unless you yourself feel pressured not to spend time on things like this, so you take your shame out on others who do, because they aren't just _toughening up_ like you maybe feel you have to, "big whoop" and all that...
If I may draw a parallel, I'd guess it's actually pretty similar to what OP said. Shame hurts, doesn't it? It subconsciously reminds people of all the times anyone around them has made them feel lesser for displaying certain behaviours, whatever they may be, and they try to cope through frustration, taking it out on others.
Even if I'm wrong about my guess, I'm sure you have _something_ like that which bothers you enough that you judge others for doing and are totally unwilling to do yourself, or be seen doing. Most people have certain ones in common, like being perceived as having made a fool of themself, and there are also different ones common in different groups, like the aforementioned things.
Anyway...I don't agree with the idea of just shoving all our problems aside and continuing to live subpar lives in any capacity, we should all try to strive for the best we can all be as shamelessly as possible. If we were all more understanding and accepting of ourselves and each other, we'd learn to feel less ashamed of the things which bother us, we'd judge others less and we'd accept ourselves more.
If you don't think everyone should try to help themselves and everyone live as happily as possible, then that's a fundamental worldview disagreement, I suppose. But I hope you're satisfied with how that approach leaves you feeling in your life.

@Overlord 3108 I see, I think I can understand thinking the pressures don't seem like a big deal depending on what amount of things you've seen, and I'm certain some people have it easier than others (just in general like, _within_ groups, I don't think all of one group have it harder than all of the other group) - I don't expect to change your mind with just me telling you things, but I personally reckon it's because seeing complaints about things here and there doesn't paint the full picture. I'd recommend talking to more people than just me, I'm no expert and I can only speak of my own understanding, but if it gives any idea, I think all those things you see being complained about tend to tie into bigger issues that it's difficult to get the full scope of even for those who experience it sometimes.
Like, say, shaving your legs might not seem like a big deal on its own (and it certainly isn't the biggest problem among other things), but consider like, what if you've been taught to tie your entire self-esteem to how attractive society perceives you to be, to a degree which contradicts itself and is unattainable by its very nature but it _includes_ things like that, and then you're constantly reminded of every little thing by people all around you, especially if they're any close to you at all (the comment I'm currently seeing right beneath this one is someone saying their mother treats body hair like some crazy crime) - so like, every time you're made aware of this sort of thing, it's like being continually told that your existence is good for nothing unless you're conventionally attractive, and on some level or other, everyone around you seems to contribute to thinking that. Not that each person literally believes that in their minds, but from the other perspective, all these people together paint a picture like that.
And then it's like...attractive to whom exactly? Well, it's to men specifically - and I'm not saying individual men necessarily consciously view women this way (and again, I only generalise insofar as to speak of the trends which exist in society, and there are always many exceptions and different types of people) - but there are underlying things which cycle through society, which all come together and paint that picture, send that message, that a woman's self-worth is tied to what she can do for a man. Even more self-actualised women still have to fight that messaging to get to that point.
And then what stems from that is things like...women's thoughts, women's desires, are respected by overall society considerably less, and that sort of thing runs deep.
Like, can you think of a single thing which is seen as a "teenage girl interest" which ISN'T widely made fun of? Again something which may not seem like a big deal on its own, but what of the long-term psychological effects when combined with everything else?
There are people who care less about what women think in every situation (sometimes not even consciously! it can come out in the most subtle ways and it can be difficult to identify what they even are unless you're looking for it, although of course there's also things like...perhaps the elephant in the room, which is the extreme example you can probably think of someone's wishes being went against), but not only that, there are women who barely feel able to consider what _they want_ since they haven't learnt to develop those boundaries in a healthy way, because of what's been signalled to them all their lives, so they don't believe what they want or think is important.
And not only do a lot of people not think to ask and pay attention, but even when they do, it's difficult to answer because that sort of thing isn't so easy to mentally break out of after growing up that way (not only because you don't feel allowed without feeling like your interests are shameful, stupid and unimportant, but also because the options aren't really presented so you may not even know what they ARE), and so you end up being at best kind of directionless and unsure of yourself, and at worst, deeply traumatised...and full of self-blame over it, which is an added immensely messed up layer. And of course, everything in between...and I won't even go into detail right now about all the different ways this undercurrent within society makes things actively dangerous, and I don't just mean strangers, but even things like, how much you can trust any given person to properly respect you and such... I'm just trying to give _some_ idea beyond it just seeming like it's all superficial, or trivial.
I won't tell you any of this is _worse_ than the messages and things society makes men internalise; I don't think being competitive about this sort of thing is helpful, and I think everything has its time and place to be discussed. However, I do think it's serious enough that it isn't just like...overblown, nor such an easy trade to make.
Also, I think every gender-related issue is ultimately tied together on some level in a two-sides-of-a-coin sort of way; every issue men face has a counterpart women face and vice versa. These are all things which divide us and stand in the way of people making genuine connections with each other just...as human beings. Even going back to shaving body hair, I think the dots can be connected all the way even to the shame you experience with enough steps. It's difficult to explain my thoughts on all that in a TH-cam comment though. In any case, I hope I've been at least just a bit more helpful. I do think it's all worth thinking about a lot. I'm also self-conscious that I missed something in my wording or made something seem oversimplified or like I'm missing something but I'm tired so I'm just going to hope this is good enough for now.
@Overlord 3108 That's understandable, but sorry I can't really think of a platform I have and would be comfortable moving to from a TH-cam comment discussion...but also like, it's fine if you don't respond too much anyway - if I've added more things to think about at all in general, I'm pretty satisfied for the time being. In general it bothers me to see people on either side of any issue being dismissive of each other, not understanding where the other side is coming from; that doesn't? Typically tend to end up convincing anyone of anything anyway from what I see? Like...even when someone says something that seems really radical I think it's still good to understand what thought process and other things led them to that point, whether one ends up ultimately agreeing or disagreeing. Like...sometimes something that seems absurd is actually right if you approach it in the right way, and sometimes some things may be totally wrong but the person who believes those things still ended up believing those things for personal reasons which are wholly real to them? I don't know, I just hope I've added stuff worth considering in general at all! I hope we can all continue to learn and grow as people. And thanks for listening to me! Listening is something I think everyone should do, but I'm still appreciative especially when it may be close enough to one's heart to be difficult to do that (as I'm sure is the reason a lot of people have trouble opening up to each other in general...), and at the same time I did ramble a fair bit and not everyone has time for that which is also fair lol. But yeah I'm always glad when people hear each other out and consider where each other may be coming from with the benefit of the doubt.

I just got back into shaving my armpits and legs after 10 years of not because I was "above it" and decolonizing my beauty standards.. I'm back to shaving and getting rid of my body hair and I actually feel so much sexier, good, and confident! I actually LOVE feeling super soft and the look of hairlessness. Totally my choice, makes me feel good, fresh, and sexy! Plus it's easier to stay fresh and hygenic.

@ sexual competition isn't biology, it's social behaviour. As is shaving. It is a very recent part of our history, one we have relatively recently only decided was attractive. Who is to say it won't become unattractive again. It's not a biological process, it's a trend.

When I stopped shaving, my pit hair made me feel more powerful...or in charge. Then I felt weird about it the first couple of times others saw it, now I don't care.

The history of pets would be very interesting, especially since I'd imagine that early "pets" (rather than working animals) tended to be exotic strange animals like the ones you listed!

There's actually a movie out about dogs and man (can't think of the name of it) where i believe they show you how dog because man's best friend (who knows about cats) as for everything else i bet it's as simple as rich folks, rich folks with money who want something new and unique.

@Jazmyne Colio same here... for whatever reason I grow very little body hair. And what little that does grow is blonde in color and very fine. So I don't shave because there is nothing really there to shave 🙃 I have a friend though who not only has to shave her legs daily, she also has facial hair that she has to get waxed. It grows thick and black. I don't know, but if that was my situation, I would just have to become the bearded lady or something, because I couldn't keep up with all that maintenance lol

After a decade of shaving while under my parent’s roof and being told not doing so is disgusting, it’s really hard to grow body hair and not feel dirty. At the very least when my leg hair is long I hate hate *hate* the feeling of stuff brushing up against it and the wind blowing on it. So I shave when I feel that it would make me more comfortable
@Overlord 3108 well I’m saying that in my case, it does, it definitely does. At least for conditioning me to think it’s better to not have body hair, especially when you had all the people close to you just point to the hair and tell you you’re gross. Now that I’m an adult I try to not shave because I’m lazy and I don’t have time, and I usually just wear pants anyways and I try to tell myself it doesn’t matter, but seeing and feeling the hair still drives me nuts sometimes.
In fact, I somewhat like shaving my armpits because it helps you to smell clean, so it makes some sense, and i know some men who do shave their armpits for hygienic purpose (mostly guys from Pakistan and Bangladesh). But shaving legs? A darn waste of time, money and energies, and a useless gender-based double standard.
I remember during sex ed in 5th grade they gave us these little "Puberty Packs" that included razors and shaving cream, and if that isn't the most disgusting predatory thing.

This video is a great history of shaving, and contains much that needed to be said about women's body issues, BUT it doesn't get at the underlying motivations. Yes, the raising of hems exposed more skin, but why was it decided that the skin should be hairless? Was it entirely because of marketing hype? How did the marketing "catch on"? I mean, if everybody thought women *should* have hairy legs, then the marketing would have been ineffective. Ditto the 2nd world war. Yes, nylons became harder to find, but why was the obvious alternative (i.e. naked hairy legs) rejected?
i did something stupid when i was young: i shaved my body hair hoping it'd get more visible when it regrows because all of my friends have visible body hair and i feel different & bald😂 thankfully it didn't grow coarser or thicker, i've never shaved again

I literally do not care what strangers think of my legs. Worst case they privately think I'm gross, best case some other woman who secretly doesn't want to shave her legs but doesn't feel brave enough feels inspired to finally give up the razor

I don’t care if you shave or don’t. I personally like shaving my legs and arms and that’s MY CHOICE. Though I do care if someone judges me FOR shaving my own body. I had a female roommate who saw my legs freshly shaved and began to say that I was “brainwashed” and told me that I shouldn’t shave at all. I merely said “I know that I can and don’t have to shave but shaving in my choice and I life smooth legs.” Also I shave my pits because I get infections from hair growing in and keeping that area clean prevents more breakouts
No one should try to make you feel bad for shaving or not shaving. It feels cool to have smooth hairless legs on your sheets! It also feels cool when you save time by not feeling pressured to shave them! BOTH ARE COOL AND PRETTY AND SANITARY AND ACCEPTABLE

I had relatives visit from Eastern Europe in the 1960s and the man wanted to know if there was a disease rampant among my teenage cousins because they had no hair on their legs.
I don't understand Jefferson's logic. I have never seen a picture of Thomas Jefferson (or most founding fathers) where he had a beard.
Beards came back into fashion before the Civil War, most likely because of the frontier and European military influence. As we all know from pictures in history books, they remained in fashion until the 20th century for men wealthy and "important" enough to be business and politics.
Different cultures in different eras have different fashions, sometimes even religious strictures, in facial and scalp hair. Ancient Egyptians shaved off ALL visible body hair. Most Semitic cultures in the ancient Middle East, including Hebrews/Israelites/Jews and the surrounding nations (ref. picture of Hammurabi) had full beards and untrimmed mustaches. Romans shaved off beards and cut hair relatively short, especially Roman soldiers, because in close quarter combat, an enemy might try to grab one's beard or hair; other cultures with whom they fought or traded, particularly the pre-literate tribal peoples, kept long hair and beards to show their courage (I'm so good a fighter that you won't even have a chance to grab my pony tail or beard!), and the Romans consequently called them "barbarians," from the Latin word "barba" meaning "beard" (a barber shop was where a man got his beard shaved or trimmed).
In the Christian Roman Empire era, western men, including churchmen, followed the Roman custom of being clean shaven, while Easterners, including priests and bishops, wore untrimmed beards (we see this in Orthodox priests and bishops today), one of the cultural differences which eventually caused the Roman Catholic Church to break off from the Orthodox (the theological excuse was the "filioque" debate; the original Nicene Creed, in both Greek and Latin, affirmed that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Father," but the Western Church added "and [from] the Son"). Meanwhile, in both East and West, Jewish men continued to wear beards, following the Nazirite vows taken by, among others, Samson, and in more recent times, even kept long, untrimmed sideburns, called "peyot" (singular "peya") in Hebrew, still observed today among the Hasidim, but not all Jews, obviously.
In the 18th century in Europe, it was popular for kings and military leaders to wear beards and really big mustaches, a fashion that spread to the US before the Civil War. But the German sects called Amish and Mennonites, being pacifist, shaved their mustaches, but kept trimmed beards in imitation of the Biblical commandments.
So it's partly fashion, partly religion, and partly practicality. Going into WWI, German officers had large mustaches and thick beards, as did the enlisted soldiers. But the use of poison gas required gas masks, and they required airtight seals around the mouth and nose. So soldiers were allowed only a short, narrow mustache, if they wanted to have one at all. One ex-corporal became infamous because he kept that kind of mustache after the war, and on into the next war (which he started), making the "toothbrush" mustache much less popular among other men.
Anyone else have a story about beard fashion changing? Like why does the millennial generation wear beards while most of my generation doesn't (except mustaches during the seventies, which we shaved off for the eighties)?

Well, you discussed the history, but didn't discuss the reason why it all started. Anyway, I remember that I read somewhere that shaving started centuries ago in brothels where older women would shave their bodies to compete with younger girls who didn't grow as much hair. The trend continued, and here we are now.

Yep the video doesn't really get to the point of the matter. It's just "clothes became skimpier and with more skin showing women started shaving". But why did women feel the need to be hairless because they were showing their legs when there never was that same expectation for men?

I think this video is supposed to be more 'edutainment' than anything - intentionally succinct and somewhat shallow in terms of info, in order to encourage as much engagement as possible.
