Ben, check the alignment of the alternator to the water pump and crank pulley. you'll need a straight edge to check it, but my money is on it being slightly out of alignment. You can shim it if needed to adjust. Taking my final ASA courses in the Grenadines this February. You are some of my greatest inspiration and I thank you for that. Be safe, have fun.
Not only alignment but ensure that you have the right belt for the pulley. Make sure that the cross sectional shape is correct such that it matches the pulley shape and that the belt is not over tensioned. The correct tension should be such that when you twist the belt in the centre of the span you can get a 90 degree twist but no more.
absolutely do not want only 2 videos per month for us regular people!!!!!! We have been watching you for years and look forward to watching every sunday morning. When you don't post by sunday evening, we realize you had a tough week. Or are in the middle of an ocean somewhere. Please do not limit us regular people to 2 videos per month :)
WoW!!! I remember a year ago , or so,when there was an "Oh, Oh" moment. Bodie went between the netting without a pfd on. And now, he is jumping off the boat, into the water. You two are great parents. 😊
I've dealt with boats eating engine belts. Sooooo many people think the belt is misaligned. Never the case. If your seeing belt powder 99% of the time it's rust in the pulley shieves. Boats are notorious for this. They sit for months on end and rust oucours on the part of the pulley that is exposed. This creates a rough bumpy alternating to smooth surface. This eats belts. Throws belt powder. Super easy to fix. Take a wrench or a triangle file , welding rod , a stick .... Whatever and wrap it in sand paper. With the engine running and belts turning the pulley shieves find a "SAFE" way to insert "whatever" wrapped in sand paper and sand pulley shieves until 100% smooth. Try to not loose any fingers. I've performed this risky finger biting operation on crew boats around north Vancouver Island many many times. Often you can't see the rust dimples in the pulley. I'd bet a pay cheque this is your issue.
Belt alignment is dependent of the Harmonic balancer or Crankshaft Pulley use two straight edges and align all belts off the Harmonic Balancer as a reference or change the Belts to Serpentine in Nature.
Love watching your videos! Especially with the little ones. You are living the life I only dream of, I hope to find a mate to take me around the world, in the meantime you are keeping me warm!
Hey guys , luv your Chanel , I have similar yanmars to yours and the issue lays with the belt size is too small for the alternator , I solved my issue with a flat belt installation and then upgraded both alternators to larger output . Haven’t had an issue in 2 years since . Merry Christmas.
Dos babies are so fun to watch. So glad y’all are enjoying the people. Such nice surroundings to do a bit of work when you want to or have to. That makes for a happier boat and family. So glad yall are getting to work out those kites again. Letting your spirits sing with the wind; does a body good plus you supply the show for those who are on the spectator circuit. Have a good holiday. Stay safe.
I went to the places you are when my wife was 5 months pregnant. They took care of her when we went with the locals to the Tabago Keys to a picnic in their boats. Volleyball on the beach, Domino's, and fresh speared fish cooked over a wood fire on a grill. Fun laid back people👍
Love your videos. Kids are adorable! Ben & Ash are fit & so chill! Glad you guys are enjoying this anchorage! Love Ash’s new glasses and watching her kite! 💛Merry Christmas from wet (not yet snowy) Ohio! 🎄
Use a long enough ruler or level or something with precision machining and lay it across the 2 pulleys. Look for gaps, along the edge. The alignment has to be perfect so the belt is not offset. Belts wear during use, but it shouldn't be excessive. I had this problem with a Universal 35, and it was because the pulleys were out a tiny amount.
I always get excited when you post a new video,,but you need to enjoy your life too so however many videos you want to put out works for me,,stay safe and always have fun!
It's Nice to see the framed map of one of most beautiful islands in the world on your wall. Our home Vancouver Island, After 16 years in the Caribbean I'm going back to Vancouver Island on Jan 29th for a few weeks then moving to the Philippines. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. God Bless.
Here's a thought for the dingy stealing conundrum. Paint the pretty engine to appear like the worst of the worst "Force Outboards " motor (non diesel) and for good measure paint a few cracks and make what looks loose fiberglass patches with releasable adhesive. The key would be finding releasable adhesive to put on silver fabric tape and strap it or rubber patches that just stick on when you're in shore. The idea being to make it look like shit...make every dingy and a few row boats look far better than messing with your hunk of junk. I could probably build you a painted cowling that fits right over the pretty Yamaha. Make a bunch of stickers or other patch making (rubber patches over nothing....perhaps in reinforcement points to make the dingy look barely able to get you back to your boat. I built out a camper shell on a pickup truck that I could leave at trail heads while I backpack for up to a week. I needed a design that wouldn't temp bears or people to breaking in. I could not think of any locking system that couldn't easily be broken, so after a summer of designing (Im an artist) the perfect truck. In the end security won out over everything. So I built an insanely simple, soft, warm and cool open area with thick insulation. I made two convertible lounge chair/bed combo...covered in fur because I had it (fake) The chairs with minimal hidden storage appear like a back seat pulled out of a car when covered with a pee stained hiker trash sheet. White on white truck with zero storage in the back...no drawers that could hold treasures, or cabinets - just space and super comfortable bed/chair or both comfort. Oh and for good measure when I'm sleeping in it I fill the back window with an insulated full window size close up of Steven Kings "It" clowns eyes. Its horrifying...I would never tap on that window. Hide your dingy in plane sight and have people wondering how the hell you got to the dock - and all removable when your among a less desperate populous. I dare you to take me up on it. Cheers and BOOOOO to the twice a month idea, but I get it.
Hi Guys, just so you know, the moorings in Myreau are not from “some entrepreneur “ they belong to the Tobago Keys Marine Park which is a national park and are regularly maintained. The etiquette is NOT to anchor in a way which stops other boats being able to use them.
its gonna be so cool for them kids to tell their stories later in life...yeah,grew up on a boat, sailing around the world, island hopping, what a way to grow up

Check the alignment of the pulleys with regards to each other. If one pulley is not aligned with the others, even by a few thousands of an inch, that can cause your issue. From an old retired automotive teacher in Ontario.
You have LFP batteries, and they put a very large load on the alternator for a long time and that creates excessive wear on the belt. I only get about 50 to 75 hours out of a belt with my 100A alternator with it dialed back to 60A with the rediculously skinny 3/8" belts our engines have. I am going to add a serpentine belt kit which should help greatly.
I'll watch as many videos as you can put out and remain an avid viewer /subscriber (hitting the thumbs up everytime)! I realize you're extra busy with two young kids who I thoroughly enjoy watching grow up (since I couldn't have kids). Bodie is fearless and such a boy 😂..... love it and Willa is just as fearless but so sweet. Love your videos guys and I'd become a patreaon if I could but we are all (my mother in law from over seas with no income lives with us 😏) living on my husband's disability pension as I can't work to contribute but don't qualify in Ontario for a disability pension. As soon as I can, if possible, I'll become a patreaon 🤗💞
On the belt… you could check the pulley temp after it’s run for awhile, see if one of them is getting hot. I think I’ve seen you with an infrared temp gun
My family were in Caribbean I was around 10 years old but I remember it, Trinidad and Curasao. I liked it a lot there. Trinidad was my older sisters fav place mine was Durban South Africa because we had a fire on board the ship and stuck n port for an extra 2 weeks. Beach everyday. It’s the first time I swam out past the breakers. Accidentally swam too far because had to get my head down and swim hard. Suddenly I am out past the heavy surf. It was cheaper travelling by cruise ship than airplane in those days, in the 1960’s. Trinidad was awesome, probably it is different now but I liked Mexico equally. Going through the canal was a treat but Panama hardly remember it it was only a short stop. I remember huge ants n Africa and Trinidad also and lush green in parks around both but Trinidad was first time I saw a really black skinned man, I was kinda awe struck and he saw I was a bit weirded seeing him. He came right up to me shook my hand and put me at ease. Such a wonderful gesture. I will never forget it. His smiling face and welcoming us.
Good questions for the viewers... I tend to like the day to day, particularly when in port, it's helpful for route planning... I also like boat work, there's occasionally things I've not thought about. I'm not big on telling people how they could have made life easier by using X or doing X, and thankfully you don't ask for folks to help with suggestions for jobs that are completed in an episode (other than for comments, not sure why people ask for that).
The Alternator when charging lithium batteries will be under significant load, it will be much harder to turn for prolonged periods of time. Might be the reason for the belts disintegrating.
One of the best upgrades in engine design has got to be the serpentine belt. One fat thick long juicy belt turning all accessories and lasting for years. I have an old motor with the old thin belts and find they are a pain. You need the OEM belt because the pulleys are made so other non OEM belts do not fully seat in the groove of the pulley and wear prematurely. The OEM belts for my engine are hard to find and grossly overpriced so you are always tempted to try a cheaper belt that looks like it should work. The joys of boating. One man’s opinion.

I've seen the belt issue before. I suggest checking the alignment of your alternator. It may be slightly out of alignment causing your problem with premature wear on your belts.
Merry Christmas!!! Best wishes for you n the kids! Be Blessed enjoy life daily and have a Great New Year Start. Nice to see you smiling and enjoying the Boat Life! Mmmmm
That drive belt needs a tensioner. Not having a counter pulley putting tension on the belt, that 'slap' of the belt will delaminate the belt and then it will grenade.
A grandma here in BC Canada. Look forward to your weekly videos. Understand that you need to make a living but will miss your weekly videos.

What I'd LOVE to see is Nahoa merch, which includes Ben's wicked beautiful tattoo - as a temp tattoo option! It's awesome.
Yup I think 2 public makes sense. It's a ton of work pushing out 4. Love you guys. ❤

I'll remember this: "sailing around the world is fixing your boat in beautiful places" 😂
Get the belt conversion kit. It bolts right on and uses the flat grooved belts rather than the stock vee belt. Waaay better. Cheers!
Love Y'all! Thank you for sharing again!
Merry Christmas & blessings in the New Year to your family. Create what suits YOU! 🇨🇦 ❤

Great camo idea: I just used stick on shelf paper to cover my snow skis while I ‘rested’ in the bar. But the lock seems easiest too.

He deserves as many beers as he wants! he's a wonderful father and mate
Check that your alternator pulley is inline with the crank. An 1/8 inch out of true will wear belts out fast.
Hi from cold sweden and happy christmas to you all.
Thank you
You need a temp gun, take temps of each pulley, your gonna see a noticeable high heat in one, that’s the one with the issue
Because your alternator under load has more resistance, I have added a twin pulley and doubling your belts. Two belts run cooler than one.
Love you're videos
Must have along with belts is the tensioner pulley
Oh my! I have twin teenagers. I do not miss the double stroller up hills.😅
Yeah Ben...pushing the kid's trolley up hill that has got to be quite the workout. Beautiful lifestyle you guys have. Enjoy it!
Love you guys.. and the kids too!!!
@12:55 Hard working father, relaxed children, 45° angle uphill. Nice setting.
Thankyou 👍
Keep it the same it nice why mess with something that good? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🎉

Woww that baby is brave!!!! That’s a big height for that baby, I couldn’t do that at that age and I was raised in the water wowwwwwww
So one of the things you look for when diagnosing a problem is everything. 😂
Thanks for sharing 👍
Sometimes the belt(s) material (rubber) it's made out of is not up-to-par. Life experience 😮
Wonce, I rebuilt an engine. The next week, 'THEY' came back complaining I had broken their windshield (water) washer.😮 They were just out of water 🫤🤦

Good to see You all having fun. Merry Christmas to You and your family.
that was so much fun to watch! your kids are so cool. love seeing them jump off the boat. no fear. Felt like i was there. just chiilin is fun!
I love your channel so much. Thank you for sharing. I'm tempted to support you guys for sure.
Go on it’ll feel great to join their fun loving family. Won’t hurt a bit and it’s good for the planet.

My family were in Caribbean I was around 10 years old but I remember it, Trinidad and Curasao. I liked it a lot there. Awesome story to share. Thank you.
Nice video of just an ordinary visit to and island and being anchored while visiting a beautiful beach. Thanks!
check the line between all 3 pulleys that they are facing each other correctly, if they are out of line the belts rise up

kids don't come any cuter!! the cap with the green and pink ...OMG ( best way to learn to count..." How many cookies?" (LOL)
One man’s opinion.
check the pitch of the V groove to ensure they are correct.
Engine belt
It's much too loose.
A simple test is after shut down feel the pulleys. If hot ok , if very hot it's slipping.
I'd say less than 10mm deflection mid span.
On hi load setups like your alternator I reccomend a cogged back belt. Then it flexes a little easier around the smaller alternator pulley and it drags some cooling air around with it.
Another test is look at the pulley bottom if it's clean. It shouldn't be as belt drives on its sides.
Water pump uses very little power compared to alternator.
Alternator will spin easily until it's field is energized.
An old trick is to cable tie a spare belt to the front of the engine so you don't have to remove another belt to replace it in a hurry.
I've seen the belt issue before. I suggest checking the alignment of your alternator. It may be slightly out of alignment causing your problem with premature wear on your belts.
