Clara Haskil represents the heights of pianism of the early Twentieth Century. She and her countryman, Dinu Lipatti were the embodiment of a musical sensibility which has vanished from classical music. They were pure, almost otherworldly. They became the music when they played.
Yes, she is great - i always loved her.But now: listen to Claire Huangci!!! I can't beleive it, so natural, without any effort - i cannot describe it in english (am german)
@@sololipsist Thank you for the reference to Huangci. Her Scarlatti is indeed delightful. Haskil and Huangci can be compared on Kk 332. They are matched on tempo (about 3 minutes each) but differ in dynamics (Haskil's phrases are more varied) and touch (Huangci's staccato/legato contrasts are greater). Too bad the recording quality for Haskil is so poor. Huangci is here: th-cam.com/video/b0soIkotkVE/w-d-xo.html
a wonderful tribute to un sung musical heroes and heroines meaning Clara and Scrarlatti who composed these 550 works 300 years ago, yes 300 years ago and just now being recognized I had the opportunity to take classical guitar lessons in Asturias Spain at age 14 my instructor introduced me to Scarlatti and now at age 68 I still love his music over and over again always reinspires me now. Scarlatti had 7 children composer to the Portugese court. He would be impressed with musical legacy.
Osloden1 (Savoie)
heard her at a live concert in my provincial , dutch home town. I was 18 and these outings were romantic because all the town's pretty girls were in the audience , all done up....
I adore her artistry! And the same I might say for Dinu Lipatti....refined and elegant ....not forced...true musicianship in the best sense of that word!!! I only wish they lived now...They indeed "became the music" when they played.
♥️🙏🏻♥️ Klaus - lovely. Several months ago, I had deleted all that was on my channel and began to add to it afresh. It’s time to revisit the great Haskil again. 😊
Indeed exquisite but please also give a listen, if you've not done so already, to Antony di Bonaventura as well. Scarlatti's Sonatas are truly incredible.
Since I wrote my comment, around 3 years ago, I have placed Scarlatti K322 myself, a really charming sonata. I still think Clara plays is beautifully and within inspiration. It is at an ideal speed for me, not too fast and never sounding "technical".
@@zvezdinki7998 well, lets say you have music in your head or ears, silent still, then you sit down at a piano and you write it down in notes on a peace of paper, after many many years, the paper lying down in a drawyer is taken by someone who can read notes, has a piano and the skills to play it on the piano, moreover the pianist knows people who want to record it on an LP, after some time computers and the www is invented, implemented in every street with the creation of YT going along and at last, we, you and I, each of us seperately, are listening to the sounds written on a paper by a man who once had them silently in his head. And we share and enjoy the music 🌳.
I was sitting in the dining hall at Prades in 1953, at the age of 15, with Krachmalnick and Grumiaux, when a woman entered at the other end of the room. Krachmalnick said, That is Clara Haskil. Grumiaux said, So that is Clara Haskil.
Clara Haskil missed German fancies that occupied south of France in November ‘42 by one day because she left for Switzerland. Otherwise they would show her what they are capable.
The way youtube cuts up these ezquisite gems of artwork - to insert comercials INSIDE the pieces!!! It's beyond barabarism! It's pure evil. IT HAS TO STOP!!
I went ahead and sprang for TH-cam Red. Maybe I caved in to the Corporate Goliath, but now gems like this aren’t desecrated by ads and I can download beautiful recordings I don’t have the time, money, or equipment to get hold of.
In the baroque period people composed a melody without even specify the instrument, could be a flute a violin etc. Music was important and not filology, as it should be.

I totally agree. Clara has allways be my 'guide' as a pianist. And Dinu has my love since my piano teacher introduced him when I was 5 years old.
I agree.

This is unbelievable! I've never heard such a refined and expressive touch from any pianist.

You nailed it. That's what she was known for. She was also a first class violinist.

She SPEAKS music! Thank you!
Magnificent touch!
Lovely interpretation and Scarlatti. It is very clear without ever sounding "technical". Thank you to whoever has posted this!
Sublime; certainly, she is the princess of piano!
Unequivocal keyboard finesse! plus wonderful photos of this devoted artist of the instrument. Thank you for posting...

Typo: obviously I meant 'played' and not 'placed'!
I positively adore her…and her Scarlatti is simply exquisite!
So do I - Thanks for commenting!
Haskil plays Scarlatti beautifully
According to Nadia Boulanger she was also a fine Liszt player!
It is lovely but if you wish to hear wonderful Scarlatti on the piano try Christian Zacharias. I think you will find his playing magnificent.
As ever, the playing is clean, articulate and intelligent (despite occasional slight distortion in the piano sound).
Thank you so much for this beauty.
It is no longer piano it is pure music...
Kristine Willems what is wrong with piano?

Wow! You were witness to history.
I have been listening to her records (all of them that I could find) for decades. You actually were in a room with her? What a moment!!!

Genial

Just listen to her Chopin!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haskil has such a soleme look about her ,as if troubled somehow
+Charlotte Whyte Yes, because of her physical ailments. She was not very strong and suffered from scoliosis.
A little rushed. Now go hear Michelangelo play Scarlatti. You are welcome.
👢
😷😤🤒
Now go hear Michelangeli and see the great difference.
Difference isn't big! Haskil played Scarlatti very dramaticly!
Harpsichord, period instrument, period. Would the music listening audience tolerate Chopin on harpsichord? Then explain, why is this acceptable?
That is another world.
You cannot listen to the piano and want a Harpsichord!
