How to rescue a High Speed Train!

  • As part of a training exercise during the downtime, King's Cross station pilot, DB Schenker Class 67, 67024, was brought over to the front of recently arrived Virgin Trains East Coast Class 43, 43257, to carry out the procedure used in rescuing a failed HST set. This isn't a full procedure as Jumper cables that allow the Class 67 to control the brakes of the HST weren't connected, but it did give a very interesting insight into how when the HST goes wrong, the situation can be saved!
    Enjoy!

    Reminds me of the Train Sim world Great Western “Drag line” scenario where you have to use a class 66 to rescue a failed HST and take it to old oak common depot for repair.

      go to HST close to 66 then go to the drivers seat then find the parking brake then if you find the button with a cap that says parking brake hold that then it will turn the parking brakes off

    Very informative video. Just an observation, but years ago, knuckles were made compulsory in the USA after a lot of serious accidents with loop and pin couplers, yet here the knuckle is only used to support the temporary coupler, and the crew still have to connect up with a pin with all the risk that entails. I know it will never happen, but it would be so much better if ALL locos and rolling stock were fitted with knuckles instead of the mixture of BSI, hook and chain, Schaffenberg types and other couplers that we have now..

    A few HSTs were retrofit with draw hook couplings. I don't know why there weren't all retrofit as I'm sure if they had it would have made it easier to rescue a failed HST.
    It's possible for an HST to be rescued by another HST, no idea how often that happened

    • @james123212
      @james123212 ปีที่แล้ว

      those 8 HSTs fitted with standard drawhooks and buffers was done as part of a modification so they could be used as surrogate DVTs due to late delivery of mk4 sets, there was never any intention to fit the entire fleet like that, also the HSTs do carry a longer coupling bar to allow 2 HSTs to be coupled together

    It seems to require very accurate positioning of the locomotive - there's even a break in the video at the point where they'd be putting the pin in, suggesting it might have taken some time to do. An adjustable length tow bar would simplify things, and surely not be that difficult to design.

    • @peebee143
      @peebee143 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sylvia Else An adjustable drawbar would likely be considerably heavier to man-handle into that gap. It would also be difficult to close the adjustable section tight without moving the assisting train, too much slack would not be good practice.

    • @Varinki
      @Varinki 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sylvia Else The drawgear that the drawbar attaches to can be let out a bit for coupling so the drawbar itself dosn't need it.

    • @smiffy1071
      @smiffy1071 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +peebee143 not needed. The link where the drawbar is placed into the HST, is extendable by 12 inches. Once you have the two locomotives coupled together, the 'flexible' gap is closed, and locked by a very thick king pin.

    • @Redmanb11
      @Redmanb11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +smiffy1071 Actually HST Mk3 trailers have fixed buckeye couplers, loco hauled Mk3a's have the drophead buckeyes. HST trailers usually require translator vehicles to loco haul them or a loco or shunter with a drophead or fixed buckeye coupler.

    • @duncanbhaltaireanraigwilso9627
      @duncanbhaltaireanraigwilso9627 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Redmanb11 To be exact the coupler use for the intercar connections of a HST is called the Alliance Coupler. It's basically an AAR Type E coupler mounted on fixed drawgear. It's the same coupler used on freight cars in the USA. However, it is fully conpatible with standard Type E, Drophead Type E's, and Type F Tightlock Couplers. So, a HST powercar (gangway end) can couple directly to a 67, or even a 91. In fact the MML electricication test train uses two HST powercars to T+T two Class 91's and a rake of Mk3's by directly coupling to the Drophead of the 91. They do however need a translator vehicle when coupling to an item of rolling stock with only Screwlink Couplers.

      BSI, Dellner, Tightlock, Scharfenberg etc are used in the whole of Britain, not just "England"... many long distance services run cross-border between Scotland and England, and England and Wales. Before privatisation in the late 90s, the nationalised company was called BRITISH Rail, not "English" Rail... Northern Ireland, the fourth country that is still in the UK but not Britain, has a completely separate railway network.
