Depending on your definition of "original" I'd definitely disagree. I mean the Hitchhiker SCP is just any other hitchhiker story but thrown into SCP universe. Or the Where's Waldo? SCP that's literally just Waldo but what if he was evil? I like them all the same, but a lot aren't original at all compared to others like Shy Guy or Hard To Destroy Reptile. I mean is God an original SCP?

For those, who do not fully understand, the Box, was once a room and gateway to Fantasy, another world where fantasy originates, the denizens of Fantasy originally could come to our world as their full selves, but the more we try to cut off Fantasy from reality, try to put out our imaginations and dreams, the more our Room reduced, and the more the dragons changed when they come to our world, they became 'paper thin' much like our belief in them has become, what was once a stone corridor is now nothing but cardboard

It does make sense when you look at it from the perspective of the Foundation. They are an organization based on logic and reason, in hopes to contain and explain all that is seen as anomalies. Because of that, there is no room for Fantasy, only Science and Logic. Without the power of imagination and creativity, Fantasy ultimately dies, and in this case where once Dragons Be, now they only Were.

Though I do think Nux should wait until after seeing some of the other SCP entrees first, as it really does rely on a lot of them for context. Thanks for this reaction.
I'm glad you didn't go with the infographic rewrite for this.
There's a counterpart, (something like The Dragon in the cave) which starts with an almost godly powerful beast, that the Foundation could never hope to contain, held at bay because one director broke the rules and expecting death, took his whiskey and went to talk.
A strange friendship held the dragon back, until they were ready, until the the 05s could be convinced, until he could fly without consequence, but in the end ... as we understand more of the world, as the unknown shrinks, as the magic and alchemy becomes science and doctrine, there is less space for dragons.

There is a lot of context that is left out, specifically the foundation the entire time was trying to communicate with the box, but as tale foundry states, they didnt know who made the box, and every attempt to communicate they tried failed. What makes this the saddest SCP isn't that the box died, it's that the box died WHILE the foundation was trying anything and everything they could to try and communicate. But nothing worked and so they really had no choice but to watch this tragedy unfold

The update about the book was created by the original writer 8 years after the initial story. They… had only a couple months left, and could barely work a pc, and this was the very last post they were able to make. As one of the Actual 05 Council (what we, the original old-school net post forum writers called ourselves when we formalized the writings we were making into a more public form in 2005) and one of the last still around, this story hits a Lot harder than for most. Not to mention that i actually had such a box as a child. (The writer was amazed that in our tiny council more than one of us did.) and yeah, no matter how many times i hear this, there will be tears. And if i ever end up in an SCP facility somehow, and find the overseers whom let this happen… i shall make sure that they never make it to clock out.

*BELIEVE DAMN IT, I BELIEVE I LOVE DRAGONS BELIEVE BELIEVE BELIEVE, WEAVE BELIEVE BELONG WEAVE BELIEVE BELONG!!!*
Damn, especially with my younger brother growing up on Dragon Tales, this is... oh god the humanity. That or I just rewatched Coco recently, got those vibes too damn, once no one is there to remember you... from dust to dust you go.
25:45... reminds me of the song in the credits of the Hobbit 3 movie... which is in reference to Fellowship of the Ring lol, when Bilbo leaves his birthday party... I bid you all, a very fond farewell. It is the song I also hope plays at my funeral whenever that happens. I may have had many demons haunting me, monsters, remember me for what I did, who I was when I wasn't in a corner crying to myself, for what I achieved, as I die with a smile on my face knowing I did the best I could, and hopefully at that point helped my dreams to fruition, if not, that they can lie in good hands, of someone I trust... I bid you all a very fond, farewell.
Also had given my dog, back in 2019 when we had to put her down, we drove her back home to bury her, the song in the 3rd LOTR movie, credits, Into the Sea. Lay down your sweet head, night is falling, you have come to journey's end.
At some point, whether it's us growing up, or our actual selves dying, yes the dreams do die, but death isn't always the end. For those tales can continue on, for others to see. Whether something is after death, no one can say, and it terrifies me, but even then, as long as my dreams can continue without me... that is what is most important.

This one was a sad one. It broke my heart as well. And as someone else in the comment said the best part of scp is they arent all scary. Some are wonderful. Some are sad. And this is an incredibly sad one.

Ok I'm up and I've got my coffee, now its take to take a critical stab at my own heart and cry a bit for the morning.
It hits me hard because I didn't really have a childhood growing up so my imagination has always been slightly out of reach for me, I can read and picture it, but its like a fisheye rough sketch, little color or details to make it more vivid.

Episodes like that makes me feel like an alien. It's one of those things that doesn't make me feel sad even though I feel I should be. Maybe because I never had a fantasy world I believed in. I had a fantasy world and even though I never have a belief in it's reality.. it still with me. It never disappeared. It's always been much darker then real life so maybe that's why "Here were dragons" doesn't really affect me that much. The saddest thing for me in this kind of stories that I'm sure that many people went through something like this

  • @DemainWolf
    @DemainWolf ปีที่แล้ว +4

I see this SCP as the concept for "The Death of Imagination." The Child's belief in the "imaginary," brought forth a "Gate" that would allow him to traverse into the world of "fantasy". A thing any child could do, linking the fantasy world to ours, but only with the genuine belief in those entities. The child that we follow in this story is just one of the last children that had genuine belief in dragons. The dragon's, being one of the most famous fantasy creatures, had the strongest connection to our reality which is why they had the ability to come to our world. Eventually humanity as a whole loses its belief in fantasy creatures being "real" due to the SCP Foundation keeping these types of creatures in the dark. Without humanities belief in them, the fantasy creatures fade from creation. The dragon's Gate is just one of many gate's in my theory, that connect to the fantasy realm. There may be other box's name "here be gnomes" or "here be elves," though, the foundation only has the one gateway. It's entirely possible that in the untold lore, the Serpents Hand or GOC may have their own versions of the boxes. I love that the cannon story isn't known so we're left to guess ourselves.

Another aspect that makes this beautiful is it harkens to how fulfilling it is to leave these fantasies behind so that yet another, your children and your children's children can be born and create their own fantasy. To protect and preserve their childhood is important but is only possible by leaving your fantasies behind.

Everytime I read or hear this one, it always destroys me. And Foundry and Nux put it perfectly, it makes me so nostalgic. It makes me think how I wanted to be a veterinarian, a paleontologist, an archaeologist. When all my family members were alive, exploring the forest around my grandparents house, of my grandmother telling me a story of a young boy going behind his house and finding young dinosaurs who could speak and he befriended (I loved and still love Land Before Time), of my grandfather taking me to his work where he painted billboards and he would slip me money. Of my grandfather on my father’s side always getting me a Boston creme donut from Dunkin Donuts and my grandmother on that side making the perfect spaghetti and meatballs.
Playing Nintendo, my father surprising me with a SNES. Trips with him and my stepmom around Christmas time to wander the city, see a play, and go to one of those goofy themed restaurants. Biking with my friends, full tilt down hills because we knew not many cars came around the area, sleep overs, my first trip to Disney World, my first time at a renaissance faire. It’s so nostalgic and makes me smile, but also hurts my heart. But thankfully I held onto some of it, through my son. We both collect LEGO, and my wife has said my eyes brighten just as much as my son when a holiday comes around. When we lift those brightly-wrapped gifts and hear that wonderful sound of bricks against bricks.
Anyway, I’m gonna end this wall of text and grab some tissues

A better way to look at it as looking at our relationship to the dragons needing to change. If we cannot see them how we used to, then we have to see them in a new way.

Ever since I first heard of this SCP about a year ago, I've been reflecting on its implications, and I think they're almost the reverse of what TheTaleFoundry suggests. Yes, Fantasy dies due to having been abandoned, but if that death had been inevitable, there would be no tragedy to it, any more than there's tragedy to a battery running out of juice.
They're right to say that each person's fantasy is different, but precisely for that reason, each of your fantasies is uniquely yours, and it will only be abandoned if you make the choice to abandon it. If you choose not to abandon it, you will never experience its loss, and this is the case with every fantasy and every myth. Not just dragons, elves or giants, but interstellar travel, alternate realities, traversing the dimension of time, the depths of the mind and soul, and yes; even immortality. I think there are good reasons to believe these things are possible, but even if immortality were not possible, and I was doomed to eventually cease to exist, there would be no point in time when I would be forced to recognize that fact. Before that point, no one could force me to give up on my dreams, and then after that point, I wouldn't be able to give up on my dreams, due to not existing anymore. To paraphase Lt. Worf of Star Trek, they can kill us, but they can never defeat us.
