The Christmas Armistice of 1914, the first Christmas of the First World War. Every depiction is a tearjerker. The Sainsbury's advert depicting it was 2014, the 100th anniversary, and I think all the Christmas adverts that year followed the same theme.

Who should be dead!! In the leaked draft scripts of S8 he blows himself up onboard the Dalek ship & it is the main reason why 12 says "Your not finished are you" as he knows Rusty is about to commit the ultimate sanction & take himself & the rest of the Daleks out! We don't know if it was ever shot but we know 100% it was in the draft script for "Into The Dalek" originally. If you do some digging the draft scripts still are searchable today.
@@frogcoin6392 Of course it doesn't make it cannon but it makes more sense when you read the S8 leaked script of what was the initial intention & why 12 said and acted as he did in that episode 🤔
When I first saw this episode, I wondered why Moffat seemed to have this thing for creating different explanations about dying and the after life. e.g. Death in Heaven (…and other eps that escape me at the moment.) it seemed a little morbid🤷🏼♀️
Capaldi's final line "Doctor I let you go" has so much subtext. It's also Capaldi letting go of the role (he's been very clear he wouldn't come back as he feels he accomplished what he wanted to do with the character) and Moffat, who (at the time at least) never intended to come back letting go of the show.
1:50 To be fair Christmas in July is probably what Australians are feeling like every year. Like the midnight mass probably would be cute during hot summer, but having all the festivities and long cooking in those types of temperatures would totally kill the mood for me. 6:40 Hopefully we are not gonna see Daleks a lot after this episode. RTD and Moffat really used them a lot to the point of not making them scary anymore. 26:00 The introduction to Jodie was really solid and upcoming episode is probably one of my favourite in her run. Can't wait for Deepa to be graced by all the new characters. I just hope we could rewrite the past and give Jodie some better scripts through those next few seasons and that Chibs made her watch at least some previous episodes of the show. Like I get the idea of having a Doctor played by someone who knows nothing about the franchise - that's really good concept overall, because it would let some fresh things into the role, but at the same time I feel like knowledge of previous portrayals of the Doctor would ground Jodie's performance much more - especially in those more problematic badly written scripts... But oh well, crossing my fingers that next ... episodes won't make Deepa want to drop the show. Too many have already orphaned it.
It was great seeing David Bradley reprise his role as William Hartnell's 1st Doctor, but I feel like they should have only had 2 or 3 of the sexism jokes since while a couple of them were based on things Hartnell himself said, they didn't need so many to show his Doctor is old fashioned compared to Capaldi's 12th Doctor, but other than that Bradley did an amazing job as the 1st Doctor in this Special as well as his role in An Adventure In Space And Time.
Not that it excuses it (and I don't like the sexism jokes either) but I always got the impression that Moffatt was less trying to comment on the First Doctor's era, and more trying to evoke that familiar 'Christmas Day' experience of having your older relatives round, and having them keep saying ahem outdated things. If that was the intention I don't know if it's a good use of the First Doctor, but still...
Ok. I had to comment when i heard you say "remember Bernard's Watch?" i loved that show as a kid. I was a big fan of the 90's "The Famous Five" series, if you haven't seen it, maybe would be a fun one to react to, if you can find it. Such an underrated show.
This episode was not boring. Yeah they was nothing going on like an evil plan but it was just a fun episode before we say goodbye to Peter as The 12th Doctor and welcome Jodie as The 13th Doctor. Really Peter was supposed to regenerate in series 10 finale but Chris the next showrunner didn’t want Jodie first episode to be a Christmas special episode and we all know Chris hate Christmas and Christmas specials lol, so Moffat changed the story and put Peter last episode here so this episode was just thrown in really.
I do hate how fast Jodie was chucked out of The TARDIS because the memes & jokes immediately after (especially women drivers) were not flattering after this episode ended that Christmas. That perception should have been clocked by someone in production & was totally unfair on Jodie but how can anyone perceive it differently?? 13 pushes a button, The TARDIS blows up & tips her out the damn door after regenerating from a man into a woman!! 😡 Let's not make a big deal of the fact the TARDIS tipped her out to save her life & the TARDIS console screen flashes up "Systems Crisis: Multiple Operations Failures" for a micro second 😬
Not only that, but the previous three Doctors (all male) didn't have steady landings... 10 crashed around the Powell Estate like a pinball. 11 destroyed Amelia's shed. 12 landed in a dinosaur's throat and sent her forward to Victorian Times.
Wow! It slipped my mind that you began these reactions right after this had originally aired. You really have "come so far". 👍 Since you're going to be having New Year's Specials instead of Christmas for the next few years, will we be getting a drinking game whenever a certain word is said? (I won't give away which one I have in mind cuz of possible spoilers, but I suspect you know) 😂
Just wondered, if you two ever caught up to the actual show would you both do reactions to the episodes for the first time so we'd actually see both of your reactions for the first time of future episodes? Would be quite cool. Also absolutely cannot wait for the series 11 reactions it's going to be so fun!!
It probably gonna happen at some point. In the span of last 4 seasons they were able to watch first 10 of the New Who. And with how the newer seasons have less episodes they should be caught up in no time. Probably around season 16, unless we get another break (like during C19) or Deepa drops the show.
Idea for a little bonus reaction - show Deepa the Jodie reveal trailer and some of the great reactions from kids, especially girls, who were over the moon that the Doctor was representing them.
I'm also in two minds about this episode; David Bradley does a great job filling in for the long-deceased Hartnell but the writers put in too many cheap sexist digs that just weren't reflective of how the Doctor was written back then. Who was actually a pretty progressive show featuring women not only as the traditional 'damsels in distress' but also as strong, capable and proactive actors in the stories. Capaldi's farewell speech just went on too long and the reiteration of the mood of 'I don't want to go' first introduced with the Tenth Doctor still grates--its happened enough times now that he should be used to it! It was a nice twist that there wasn't actually an enemy or any evil plot, just a gap in the Doctor's knowledge (how did the Time Lords fail to notice this outfit?) but it did tend to drift at times. Jodie, however, won me over immediately with that single "Brilliant". As an old time fan dating all the way back to Hartnell, I had my doubts bout casting a female Doctor but. . . no treading on spoiler territory!
A great epilogue story , it's such a fever dream the final third of the episode is my favourite of the story ....bring on the Whittaker era can't wait 🌈💙💙
This episode could have been a great sent off for Doctor Who. In my opinion this is where the show should have ended. The Doctor die by saving people life’s just like he always does. There was no evil plan, he got memories of Clara back. Got to say goodbye to his 2 companions and he met the good Dalek again who was actually good. Yeah could be a good way and sad way to die for The Doctor. Die as happy man.
I really love Peter Capaldi as the doctor, and he is my favorite reboot doctor. Moffett is also my showrunner. I will most definitely be back when Jodie is done. Don't particularly care for her era
If you want another take on the Christmas truce of 1914 check out the video for Paul McCartney's song 'Pipes of Peace' which also depicts truly wonderful acts during the ceasefire and what brought it to an end. I found this a better episode on second viewing. It is an analysis of the Doctor's ethos and character and also full of humour, so I forgive it the lack of a huge reveal. But Christmas Specials did tend to the saccharine after the Tenant era and I do prefer that over battle episodes. And this is where I leave you (I did watch on a bit in and out until this year because as a 1963 veteran I wanted it to work). Not because of politics (huge Buffy fan and it is the posterchild for the progressive) but the quality is about to nose dive.
The ending of "The Doctor Falls" in my opinion is where the 12th Doctor should had regenerated but I get the 13th Doctor wasn't yet cast at the time of filming and Chibnall didn't want to do a Christmas special which is ashame because that would had been a perfect way to end his Doctor taking the heroic route rather than the typical "Oh i don't want to go" route. David Bradley great actor and perfect for the casting of William Hartnell for "An Adventure in Space and Time" but I have to say I did not like his take as the First Doctor even Hartnell's Doctor wasn't that sexist I felt they went abit too far with the jokes. I look forward to seeing Deepa's journey into the 13th Doctor era.
I liked the reaction and your thoughts regarding it being a softer episode that allows you to breathe as you say goodbye and how it ends the era in a neat bow as it were. I am however not a fan of this episode especially coming off the greatest finale in Who history and a lot of my feelings is down to the portrayal of the 1st Doctor in this episode. I love the First Doctor and he's one of my favourites and I thoroughly enjoyed watching his era of the show (bring back pure historicals you cowards), but he so often gets miscategorised as a grumpy, crotchety, sexist old man but that is not who the First Doctor is and if you watch more than his first two stories you realise that. It felt like Moffat wanted to critique societal attitudes from the time period more than portray the First Doctor. There are things I do like in this episode, I like how there is no villain in this story as you say, it is a nice touch that the 12s final story is him challenging his pre-conceived nothing that everything must be nefarious (especially as he's about to change). I also really like 12s ending speech, I hear some people say its pretentious or takes too long but this is a Doctor that spent years trying to find himself and realise who he is and wants to be so of course he doesn't want to struggle like that again. I did laugh hard when Deepa compared it to a drunk person rambling incoherently lol. I also do like the idea of having a Doctor thats reluctant to regenerate meeting his first self before their regeneration too, I think a llot more could have been done than what was in the episode. Overall the episode gets a 3 or 4 out of 10. I might have missed it because I started typing this while watching but did you not give a rating? I think I missed it. There's a tonne I could say about Capaldis era but this comment is probably already way too long so I'll just say that 12 is my fave. I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions to Jodie's era, I feel like its hard to get thoughts on that era without it being marred by the toxicity of the discussion for stupid reasons
And the moment when things really went wrong fundamentally… Hello Chibnall, goodbye Doctor Who 2005… We loved you, you didn’t recover yet, we hope you will.
@@booradley8895 is it important for you to see me here or not? 👀 It seems so. You took the time to write 2 different comments for it. And no, it’s not overdamatic. (It’s not a word in English anyway...) It’s a simple fact that at this point Chibnall started his rampage of destroying the show. I love Peter Capaldi and he's my favourite Doctor out of the entirety of NuWho, Jodie Whittaker is my second favourite Doctor but however I have to say I did feel the regeneration speech dragged on far too long and I was getting to the point and i was like "Come on man get on with it you've been through this 12 times before" i do feel it takes the drama out of the regeneration when they do that I much prefer when a dying Doctor regenerates they just say one word then that's it then boom done new Doctor I do feel it lacks that with NuWho alittle which was one of the reasons I wasn't a fan of Matt Smith's regeneration because the speech went on far too long and I wish the Doctor would stop holding the regeneration in and just embrace it it should be natural to a Time Lord anyway. I wish they would bring back the lying down regenerations and do a different special effect regeneration rather than the predictable golden glow it was interesting maybe 1 or 2 first times around but it's kind of getting boring now I wish they would do something new with it.

I really love Peter Capaldi as the doctor, and he is my favorite reboot doctor. Moffett is also my showrunner. I will most definitely be back when Jodie is done. Don't particularly care for her era
Clara the best companion.
Deepa missed the best speech telling the Doctor what it means to be the Doctor. Please rewatch.
“he’s not experienced it before”
yeah about that😭
Bruh, this comment is enough to be a spoiler! Delete it!
*Delete, Delete, Delete!* In Mondasian Cyberman voice
Would you and deepa ever do classic who and also react to big finish audios together
I would watch those in a heartbeat
I’ve got some Classic Who ideas - but no promises
Was it not the queens nose, they rubbed the nose and got the wish
Yeah, on the 50p
I'd give it a 4
You need to do Merlin together xx
And the moment when things really went wrong fundamentally… Hello Chibnall, goodbye Doctor Who 2005… We loved you, you didn’t recover yet, we hope you will.
*yawn*
Wow overdramatic much
So won't be seeing you here again?
@@booradley8895 is it important for you to see me here or not? 👀 It seems so. You took the time to write 2 different comments for it. And no, it’s not overdamatic. (It’s not a word in English anyway...) It’s a simple fact that at this point Chibnall started his rampage of destroying the show. And like it or not, if it’s not a cultural phenomenon like Doctor Who, he would succeed in canceling it. Any other show would be. The view numbers, ratings, the hate, everything was on the typical level of canceling.
@@nazimelmardiplease don't bring up the viewing figures in thud way. All shows went down, but that's because of the TV landscape compared to how it was
I love Peter Capaldi and he's my favourite Doctor out of the entirety of NuWho, Jodie Whittaker is my second favourite Doctor but however I have to say I did feel the regeneration speech dragged on far too long and I was getting to the point and i was like "Come on man get on with it you've been through this 12 times before" i do feel it takes the drama out of the regeneration when they do that I much prefer when a dying Doctor regenerates they just say one word then that's it then boom done new Doctor I do feel it lacks that with NuWho alittle which was one of the reasons I wasn't a fan of Matt Smith's regeneration because the speech went on far too long and I wish the Doctor would stop holding the regeneration in and just embrace it it should be natural to a Time Lord anyway.
I wish they would bring back the lying down regenerations and do a different special effect regeneration rather than the predictable golden glow it was interesting maybe 1 or 2 first times around but it's kind of getting boring now I wish they would do something new with it.
I mean...
