How To Replace a Gameboy Cartridge Battery

- Do not replace a Gameboy game battery any other way! Say no to the electrical tape method 🚫
Make sure you have these tools:
- 3.8mm Gamebit
- Soldering Iron
- Solder
- Flux
- Tweezers (not NEEDED, but good to have)
- New CR2025 battery depending on the size your game needs
- IPA for cleaning up.

I just dug out my old original GameBoy from the attic & this exact game had a dead battery!

Video helped a lot man, thank you. It wasn't until my 3rd time changing a battery that I felt comfortable with it. Coincidentally though that 3rd time was the only time I had flux, the first 2 I didn't have any and it went okay but the flux helps.

With the analogue pocket coming out, I really need to learn how to do this, but I’m really afraid that I’ll burn a part and break it entirely.
I would maybe try buying some cheap Gameboy games that use battery for game save and practice on them? Google search to see which games use a battery and then see if you can pick them up cheap. Or you could find someone/retro games company that offers Gameboy game battery replacement, obviously for a fee.
You could always buy games noone cares about and low qualities but tested to work so u save time and gain experience
Very clean work, and well made video overall. So much useful information and explanations. Too bad the process of this inevitably requires much skill and effort as well as it can be pricey to get all the necessary soldering equipment. But once you learn the skill of soldering, it stays and can always be used for future circuit board repairs! I would say it is definitely worth the money and time investment especially if you are into retro games and electronics!

For the IPA, is that short for isopropyl alcohol? I have some as I’ve used it to clean and replace an old cpu.
Yes, IPA is isopropyl alcohol. Also known as isopropanol. I know this is an old comment but I *hate* when someone uses an acronym and I can't find out what it means!

Thank you! 🙏🏾I bought Pokemon Crystal for a quite a lot of change, and it arrived with a dead battery. I have a solder iron (used it once on my guitar), ordered some batteries and gonna do this. It would be better to use a multimeter, right? I don‘t have one. Maybe I should get one too, though.

I only have one "complaint"! (More of an observation)
I think flux and braid are not necessary for this replacement, if this is supposed to be a super-beginner's guide. But my concern is mostly with the braid. Recommending a braid to a beginner (especially if they buy a bad one) could result in them panicking when it sticks to the board and ripping the pads off, I'm guilty on this but not on a cartridge
This is a good point - although I wanted this video to be the "covers all aspects" of replacing the internal battery. Having said that, I didn't cover the issue of losing the game save so in the end it didn't cover all aspects 😂

So this would probably look a bit clunky but I'm curious what would happen if you attached a battery holder with two double aa batteries.
What kind of flux did you use
Is this something a complete newbie could do? I want to replace some old gb batteries, but have never soldered before, and thus I'm very afraid of damaging the board
Same here, I tried it for myself a couple weeks ago and was able to do it. But I suggest understanding the process fully before getting into it so you don't panic. AND get one of those chisel tips for your soldering iron like he does in the video. I used a fine point tip and I feel like i struggled more with it because of that
I recently got F-Zero for GBA and the seller said it wasnt saving so i went a had and grabbed it. Swpped the battery and i still get no saves on the game. Idk what else can be happening

Yes, search for "tabbed CR1616" or "tabbed CR2032"
Is there a way to provide temporary power so that you don't lose save files if there still are saved files but the battery is getting really low
the only thing I know is, before you allow your battery to run out, there is ways to back up your save file by using a GBA backup tool. That way, you temporarily keep your saved data stored there, allowing you to change the internal battery, and once done just re insert the saved data into the GBA cartridge using the same backup tool.

if you remove the battery do you have to replace it for the game to still work, i understand no battery no save, but if someone could let me know if i remove it to prevent the battery from corroding and destroying the game itself, will i still be able to play it if i put it back together with no battery in it?
I need to do this. Still gotta buy the batteries but now I think I can do it. This feels simple enough that I can do this without fucking it up. I need to borrow a solder kit from someone though. I know someone with one. Then I can start Pokémon Crystal again.

So, if you want to replace the battery, no matter what, your previous save will disappear, am I correct?
It is possible to keep the game save, but you would need to look into cart readers and dumping the game save from a Gameboy cartridge. You can also supply the cartridge with power but this will be more complicated and harder to pull off.
But yes, if you just remove the battery it will lose the game save.
If you replace the battery with a battery holder you can technically also solder some floating wires (properly insulated) so next time you change the battery you can use those wires to supply some voltage via two AA batteries inside an external AA battery holder with alligator clips.
Alternatively you can use the AA batteries here too but you'd need to solder the wires somewhere else than the battery pads or you'd just have the wires come undone.
So yes, you can keep the save, but it may not be an easy thing for a beginner. Best to just get the cheapest cartridge dumper you can and dump the save.
Basicly, if you want to change the battery it's because you can't save ;D
But you can solder wires with a 3,3V alimentation during the process so you can change it without have any deconnection
@@zeldrix6 3V will be enough if powering off of other batteries
@@zeldrix6 They're obviously talking about when it's not low enough voltage yet to lose a save, but low enough to warrant replacement. As mentioned, their only option to preserve their save file is to dump their save file onto a PC, but then of course you can't transfer that back to the cart. You'd have to use one of those re-writable carts to transfer the ROM and save file to.
I was 32 years old when i found out the cartridges had batteries.......lol i assume this is why my Gold wont save a damn game but my Ruby Red will? (replaced the battery in the Gameboy itself)
Alright, I have a question that isn't battery related. I have two gb cartridges that I'm having an issue with. One has a weird buzzing sound in the audio, and this is the only game I have that issue with.
The second one, when i insert it into the system and boot it up, only the copy right symbol shows up, but not the Nintendo logo; and it fails to load.
I've cleaned both of them with IPA, but am still having the issues.
Any tips?
If you’ve cleaned the cartridges and there’s still an issue it’s poor contact with the pins on the cartridge because of either; corrosion on the pins/cartridge or dirt/corrosion on the pins inside the gameboy itself.
How to you change the tabs?
The tabs come already spot/tac(?) welded onto the battery so you can’t change them without destroying the battery. (If that’s what you mean)
