Love this video. So excited to try my hand at these. I did not quite understand the size to cut the pockets. Could you help this silly woman? Thank you in advance.
Hi Katherine, So sorry, I wasn't very clear on this. Here's my measurements for a 5x7" journal: -The peltex stabilizer cut 7.5" high x 11"wide (round the corners) -Outer and lining fabric cut 8.5" x 12" -The Pocket fabric cut 8.5" x 15" . Cut the piece in half height wise. So you have 2 pieces measuring 8.5" x 7.5". Fold each pocket piece in half and press. Each should measure approximately 8.5" x 3.75" folded. Hope this makes sense. Thanks so much for watching! Julia
You all prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the login password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Louie River I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Love these journals. I have to say that I find your videos so soothing and enjoyable. They spark my creative juices when I get too entrenched in my "working from home mode". Bless your whimsical heart Julia.
Hi, I am so glad you like the style of my videos. I am constantly making things for my Etsy store and my summer shop. When I started my channel I turned on my camera and shared what I was working on that day. Some of it gets repetitive but hopefully there is always something new to learn. Thanks so much for watching...Julia
So cute. I really like your straight forward style of presenting the information. It's clear and concise, without so much "chit chat" which can make the videos too long. Thank you so much.
Going to teach this in my class at the women's shelter/treatment center here in Detroit, MI. Great journal and I like that they can personalize it. Printed up some great words of encouragement. You have added so much to the creativity of the projects I teach. Thanks so much.
Hi Julia! I just wanted to say what great company you and your ideas are during this 2020 quarantine in Buenos Aires, Argentina. So pleased to meet you!
Such a great tutorial. I have this on my Christmas To Make list. I am going to watch your other tutorials. As a quilter, I am fascinated by your creative ideas.
@@stitchesbyjulia I bought the fabric paint, but found the brown to be too dark, so I will get my other acrylic paint out and see if I can find something suitable.
Thank you for sharing this pattern and instructional video. I sewed a notebook cover for 5x7 composition book. It came out pretty good except that my pen holder came out so that the seam & extra elastic was on the outside of the cover! I was able to easily take it off. I’m excited to make more of these as gifts. Thanks, Julia!
Hi Julia - My goodness these are adorable. Love the base fabric you used. Do you remember where you purchased it? I always say it but you come up with the best creations. The sky is the limit with how you can decorate these. The way you paint the face is perfect. Just enough to show but it doesn’t take away from the design. Hope you are having a great summer and that your market shop is doing well. I’m always excited when I see you have posted a new video. I know I’m in for a treat just seeing what you have come up with and sharing how you do it. Big Hugs! 🤗💕🦜🦋
Hi Pam, I don't know where the fabric came from- sorry about that. It's been hanging around my sewing room for a long time LOL! I'm not much for an artist/painter but I found that less is more. I try not to overwork or overthink it! Hope your summer is going well. Mine is going way too fast! Julia
Hi Julia what a fabulous project I love it, needless to say I love everything you do. I will be certainly having a go at these beautiful journals. I am currently trying to finish 3 wedding planner journals for my granddaughter, her Mum and her future Mum in Law, these have taken ages and are my first real go at making journals. My goodness they have taken over my life so I hope they all like them as they are surprise gifts. Your tutorials have been so helpful, I have found sewing them together a challenge but they are nearly ready to send off to them. I hope you are enjoying good weather and your market shop is thriving. Sending you all my love as always xxxxxxxx Dorothy 👍😘❤️🌟🌟🌟🌟💐
Hi Dorothy, Your journals sound beautiful! Handmade journals are a labor of love! What a wonderful surprise. It's always so good hearing from you. I hope your summer is going well. Mine is going fast! Seems like it just warmed up LOL. Have a great weekend. Julia
Love this, Julia. I am a journal maker and I am always looking for good ways to make a soft fabric cover. I’ve never thought of rounding the corners - definitely going to give that a try. And wow, that free motion stitching looks like fun! TFS. 🤗
You’re so talented and I have picked out a few ideas . The touch you give to your work keeps growing and whimsical to any eye !! You so love what you do!! THANK YOU !!
Julia these are exquisite! Great gifts for family and friends. Still unable to order been outta work 5 weeks, no work no pay. Later I will be buying theses! TFS ❣️💚 💜💙
I bought a bunch of these notebooks from Staples several years ago. I have way too many. Now I know what to do with them. Thanks for this great video. Also, you inspired me to use my quilting foot. I have been intimidated by it. But you make it look so easy. Thanks again.
HI Karen, So glad you are trying the quilting foot. Once you get the hang of it- the possibilities are endless. It's addicting! I will let people know about Staples. I can't always find the 5x7" compositions at Walmart. I really like the size. These make great gifts too! Happy creating, Julia
Hi Julia! I'm a new subscriber. I am really enjoying your channel! You do really nice work! I'm really inspired to try my hand at this. Thank you for your generous heart in sharing your talent!
Love it!! Mixed media journaling is one of those things I'm kind of obsessed with but haven't been actually *doing*...I hope to change that soon. Thank you so much for the inspiration!!
Just found your channel. Had to run out and find these little composition books. 67 cents in Walmart. Dollar trees won't have til school starts I guess. I'm going to make these as a set - a covered journal and an extra one to replace. Thanks!
Hi, I am so glad you enjoyed this video and are making some of these notebook covers. My Walmart usually carries these small composition book too. The price makes them doable! Thanks for watching, Julia
Where is the PDF on your site? Thank you for all your instructions on your projects. I really enjoy watching you. It gives me great ideas on making various crafts.

Nice job Julia. Your instructions were easy to follow and I love the idea of using the small, lined notebook that will be so convenient to replace. All I need to complete some books are the label sheets that i pick up at Staples.....or maybe check Amazon and order from them. I noticed again that your prices are in Euros. It's the only site I have this trouble with. Very strange.
That is so strange! Someone else said it shows as AU currency. It's US on my end. It must be something in Etsy's settings. Great hearing from you Phyllis. I hope your summer is going well! Julia
stitchesbyjulia Hi Julia. I'm pretty sure you are going through this nasty heat wave. I've been lying low and playing in my studio. I recently picked up these little note books. I found a pack of 3 on sale at Target and another pack at Tues. Morning. Amazon also has some good deals on these notebooks. So, you and I will be making some covers together today. The other day at Target, I found an old 2018 wall calendar with a price tag of $6.50. I asked what the sale price would be and was told $3.25.......for a 2018 calendar! I refused it. How much you want to bet it will end up in their dumpster. :-) It would have made a good junk journal. LOL. Hope your summer shop sales are doing well and that your weather isn't like ours. Thanks for all your wonderful ideas. Phyllis
I am so excited to find your channel! I have been wanting to do a project like this. Can this be done with a standard sewing machine? Thank you for the inspiration 🌸🙏🌸
Hi, Yes! I am using a standard sewing machine. I am using a free-motion foot. If your machine did not come with one, ask a sewing machine dealer to get one that fits your machine. You do need to disengage your feed dogs. This is done with either a button or lever to drop the dogs, or a plate that covers the dogs. Hope this helps, it's a lot of fun!
Hi, I have not, but I love working with cork. I will have to try. I really love using cork for accent pieces- stamping works well on cork. It also cuts well in my BigShot. Thanks so much for watching! Julia
Hi Kathryn, You can use any heavier weight stabilizer. Usually the craft stabilizers are heavier. The Peltex 72F has fusible adhesive of both sides but you can also use a single-sided fuse. Thanks for watching, Julia
Great and as always your instructions are super easy and clear to follow👍🏼Really love this and that size of notebook is perfect. I once found that size of notebook at Dollar Tree. I was wondering what type of printer is needed to print on fabric. Thanks so much.
Hi Julia, I am hoping to do this after Christmas but I am still unsure about how to get the picture onto fabric, also which parts to put in the printer. Perhaps you could leave instructions step by step in the comments, thank you so much, I enjoy following you. Mandy
Hi Mandy, Cut your fabric the same size as copy paper. (8.5" x 11" in the US) Cut a piece of freezer paper the same size as your fabric. Iron the freezer paper unto your fabric ( wax side to wrong side of fabric). Place in your printer the same way your paper feeds. My printer has a tray in the front. I lay my fabric with the freezer paper up because that is how my printer feeds. Your printer may be different. Hope this helps. Julia
I did some research on the laser printer and it sounds like you can run fabric through it. A laser printer uses heat but as long as the waxy side of the freezer paper is completely covered with fabric it should work. I have both a tray loading printer and a top loading. Both work with with fabric.

May I ask what price you ask for these? None in your store to see price and was thinking of trying at my bull bash.
Hi, Most of my journals are $24-$28. I have to get busy and get more in my shop. I was born in ND:)
So awesome!!
Am interested to know if you use an ink jet printer ? Would the prepared fabric go thru a laser printer, do you think?
Hi, I used an ink jet. I'm not sure about a laser. Maybe someone else will chime in on this question. thanks for watching! Julia
Gillian Ellison I had the same question. Also wondering what inkjet printer Julia used; was it top loading or sheet fed by the bottom tray.
I did some research on the laser printer and it sounds like you can run fabric through it. A laser printer uses heat but as long as the waxy side of the freezer paper is completely covered with fabric it should work. I have both a tray loading printer and a top loading. Both work with with fabric.
Not sure if I’m brave enough to try a laser printer....did you actually try this, or is it a theory?? Would be great if it could be done
Have not tried it- I don’t own one. Perhaps someone will chime in
Can any machine use the free arm for free stitching .?
Hi, Most machines are able to free-motion stitch. You need a properly fitting free motion foot ( a sewing machine dealer can help) . Also, the feed dogs need to be disabled. Some machines have a lever to lower the dogs and some a plate to cover the dogs. Hope this helps. Free-motion stitching is so much fun!
