  • Games disappear. Some forever. There are a lot of reasons for this across PC games tabletop even sports. Some can be saved but many simply can't. There are games that are just "gone." Even with all the efforts to preserve and remember games the void can still claim them. Join the GeekNights crew as we explore the how and why of games disappearing from this Earth. Along the way we'll dive into several fascinating examples of games you should play but you can't.
Presented at #PAX West 2023 on Sunday, Sept 3 at 3:30pm in the Blue Morpho Theatre. #paxwest #gamedesign #panel

Just watched your ancient "Is Go A Bad Game?" clip. Glad to see you're still doing conventions and entertaining your audiences. Nice work.

I played Action Quake (1?) and Moirai. The first game I played was in 1972 on a Plato IV mainframe with 16x16 touchscreen and vector display (plasma?). Good luck preserving that thing. I wonder how long Minecraft Java Edition will last.

A great example of the least concern with tabletop games, when I was in middle school my gaming group was massive into Cosmic Encounter. We were into it so much that at the time I didn't own a copy, but I was literally able to recreate the entire game on my own from memory. And the only part that I got wrong was just a few of the quantities of the cards, but I wasn't off by much.
(Have to watch the video in chunks, but you guys are my favorite for game discussions so I'm looking forward to the rest!)

We got all the cords, and all the Gameboys, and the GameCube, and the tv, and 4 friends, and Crystal Chronicles was great.

You guys are something else man. Asking nerdy analytical questions (which I love) about video games and it’s culture (which I also love) so glad I found y’all. And it’s long so I can watch at work and I’m hooked.
Also “We live in a capitalist society”
    “Sadly”
Comrades 😎You guys are so neat.

Check out Democratic Communism or Eurocommunism (in opposition to "revolutionary communism" if you want to take a wild ride on what could have been (and possibly could still be).

World’s End Chapters 1-3 are amazing Flash games with a small but dedicated fanbase, currently unplayable but may move to
mobile or Steam eventually. They’re tactical combat story games set in a dystopia and have fun dialogue, lore, and character design. Would love to see those games get some attention.
Also Rym the beard is awesome you look great.

This was pretty fun to listen to as someone who is really familiar with Quake, Tribes and Action Quake 2. Thanks.
On a side note, Tribes: Ascend had a fate more horrible than death with the developer Hi-Rez. Handful of players are still keeping that alive in some dark corner of the internet too.

I'm playing in RTS Beyond All Reason (basically it's similar to remake of total annihilation 1997) and it's didn't extinct because of being open-source project. P.S It's a long story...

That's always been my observation. All "board" games are really just card games. We should call them card games, but we don't. Not only can cards simulate the other pieces, cards are already a part of ~95% of board games.

But playing Go with cards instead of tactile pebbles might not feel as nice :(

There are certainly some components which cannot be (at least usefully) simulated with cards. Besides, most people in the hobby use the term “tabletop games” anyways, since plenty of games don’t have a board. Or don’t have cards, or whatever.

Plenty of card games you could play with tokens or dice though.
