  • Part 16: • Akon on His Former Roa...
    Part 14: • Akon: T-Pain's Career ...
Part 1: • Akon on Growing Up in ...
    --------
In this clip, Akon speaks about signing Lady Gaga and doing her two first albums, which are her biggest to date, and Jimmy Iovine buying out his stake. He explained that he took Lady Gaga's career as far as he believed he could, and Akon added that he didn't want to be selfish and hold her back despite her being the biggest artist in the world. He went on to say that the deal allowed him to invest, but Akon didn't hint at the amount he got. During the conversation, Akon also spoke about having the chance to sign Drake, who he said sounded like Eminem in the first demo he heard. Akon added that he didn't have the $1 million to sign Drake, but he added that he's worth every penny now.

its hard for drake to fall off cause hes such a neutral/ extremely talented individual, as far as hip hop standards go. he fits in almost everywhere.
Toronto is close to buffalo New York and detroit, so his style can swing east coast or midwest sounding.
Toronto also has a huge Caribbean population, so he can genuinely ride that wave.
toronto is technically international, so he collabs with mad international artists.
his dad as well as young money are southern, so he can go that route too.
and hes half black half jewish, so hes in behind the scenes and in front of the scenes in hip hop.
anything drake does is seen as positive. if he collabs or imitates other artists, people see it like hes bigging them up. if people write for him, they say "but only he could deliver it like that." (granted he has written some of the best songs.) even when he loses a battle, people talk about how well he picked himself back up afterwards.
hes been on top for mad long.

Drake pays attention to different scenes and it helps keep his brand alive as well as keeping his ideas fresh.
Vybz Kartel did the same thing within Dancehall music. The youth on the street corner spitting in unique styles and using various Monikers and slangs influence him to stay fresh in the studio. Keep ur ear to the underground is a very smart move. Because it is those young people who kickstart a new style before it is fully developed and polished to then influence the music genre in the future.
