      Hi. So my cockatiel (pfp) I got about a month ago. We couldn’t find any babies in the area for at least three months. So we were very eager to get one. We heard that a nearby store had one but It might be a little older. So when we got there we saw him and the person told us he was about three years old. So we of course Weren’t too sure because he was older. But at the store he was super nice and knew how to do step up and seemed to like me so I thought it was okay. Now at home, he wont do step up and anytime I try to get my hand near him he will viciously try to bite it. He isn’t a mean bird to me it’s more of just my hands in general. And I know we can’t know what his life was like before my house, so I don’t know what he’s been through. I’ve been spending a lot of time with him and we’ve been working at it. He is a very happy bird and loves me but he still tries to attack my hands. I’m sorry this got so long but I just Don’t know what to do now. Do you have any advice?

    Caiques fear nothing. Heard some unusual sounds downstairs, so I went to investigate. Our poor elderly Pomeranian was whining, and looking from me to her food dish and back again - caique had somehow gotten loose, clambered down, and was standing right in said dish while slowly eating the kibble piece by piece and making unblinking eye contact with the dog.

  • @1hawaii21

    You hit Caique behavior on the head. I have 5. They can be LOUD and work together like a group of small terrorists. They can be very possessive of me. They just tolerate my husband. My husband has canaries. Believe me my Caiques would love to get to them. They also require, as you know, a tremendous amount of interaction and toys. At least once a week I change toys around. People often make the mistake of falling in love with the beauty and the cuteness. But, these bird are what a bird on meth would look like. I knew what I was in for when I first got mine. And, have kept them for over 20 years. I went in with my eyes open. They are my bird of choice but they’re not for everyone.☺️

    Your "review" of these birds is so spot on and too funny! I remember seeing Nanday Conures in a Berkeley bird store near my work place. They were soooo gorgeous and I really wanted one, but at the same time, if you hear these up close like I did, you KNOW it will be totally impossible to bear indoors.
    I had a boyfriend who bought a Blue-and-Gold Macaw when we were living together. The cool factor wears off in about three days. This was a long time ago before the internet or even good parrot training guides were widely available. Getting a macaw is like putting an ad out for a housemate and letting some random, super loud person with the behavior of a 5-year-old move in. With the looks of a model maybe, but that doesn't make up for the rest. We found a person who had other macaws and re-homed him. Awesome animals but we were totally naive. We were looking for a pet and they make bad pets. Some people are able to free-fly theirs and that seems like a good way to have them...tired out ;)

    Hawk Head owner here, been absolutely loving your videos, I grew up in SoCal with a father who bought a lot of birds mostly if not all from none other than Omars in the late 90s and early 2000s, (I even swept floors for free at Omars for like a month trying to get a job there when I was like 16 lol, so it was a real trip to see you talk about them so much in your videos) he bought Montezuma (our Hawk Head) from Omars as a baby that my parents had to feed with a syringe of baby bird food formula when I was about 2 years old, I'm now 24, I dont remember a day of my life without Monte; later my dad owned a Cockatoo for a time, (dont remember why he got rid of it tbh) we had a smallish green parrot we named Yoda for a couple years whos species I'm totally blanking on the name of right now, (I dont remember why we got rid of that one either honestly) we had 2 finches of some kind that lived full lives in cages basically, we barely could if ever handled them, we had a cockatiel named Pickles who lived a full life, we had 2 budgies for a few years who lived in this outdoor aviary my dad made specifically for them until one day I think my little brother left the door open and they flew away if I remember correctly... (he was like 4) and then my dad bought a Sun Conure I think it was, I might be getting that species wrong but either way I'm pretty sure that bird, we'll just call it a Sun Conure, was the last bird my dad ever bought, Monte murdered that Sun Conure... We still owned Pickles at that time and Pickles didnt get bothered by Monte for years after that before passing away, Monte had never been friendly with any of the other birds we had owned and we knew that, we kept them separate and it never seemed to be much of an issue until one day we left the house for a few hours and I think what happened was we left Monte out of his cage which we dont do as much anymore when we leave the house, and then we either forgot to put the Sun Conure away sense we always put the other birds away cuz of Montes aggressions, we didnt ever wanna take any chances ironically enough, or it got out somehow, either way we came home to Montes murder scene that day... Obviously my dad felt absolutely horrible about it, but yes, Hawk Heads are NOT a bird you should try to own with other birds, that all being said tho... I DO NOT have to keep my Hawk Head on the end of a stick, like... What!? LOL, to be fair everytime we take Monte somewhere they tell us he's the nicest Hawk Head they've ever seen, although I'm not sure thats saying much with the reputation this bird has and how uncommon they are to actually even see in the first place, maybe it is true that I have a remarkably nice Hawk Head but regardless Monte is amazing compared to what I sometimes hear about Hawk Heads online, when it comes to my personal relationship with Monte I have absolutely 0 issues at all, no nipping or biting or anger or anything, sometimes he gets a little angsty I'd say, and when I dont give him the attention he needs, or fail to provide him with enough stimuli he will make a lot of noise, but other than that Monte is no issue at all, and while I'm not always able to hang out, I can stop 90% of the screeching just by picking him up and bringing him to come hang out with me, I also have a fair amount of success showing Monte to my friends and getting Monte to let them pick him up if not the first time they meet then another time very early on, he definitely remembers people and gets more comfortable with them over time if they are respectful of his space, he's given a few small nips over the years to the overly confident, probably a couple left marks, most have not tho, I'm pretty sure only 1 time has Monte ever actually bitten any friend and made them bleed and it was my dads friend who was kinda being a dick and both not listening to my dad telling him to not push it anymore and then not respecting Montes space, his finger bled very slightly as a result, Monte is also a tiiiny bit moody, never in a way that he gets nippy or I cant pick him up or anything like that, but he will let me know if he doesn't want to be handled just with body language and stuff, he'll still let ME or anyone else in the household pick him up in those scenarios, but a new person? Prooooobably not, only 1 time has Monte EVER biten me really, and it was on my lip, I moved to PA in 2019 and Monte arrived here over a month before me due to complications, and when I finally met back up with Monte and tried giving him the little kiss we always do, instead of reciprocating like he always does he bit my lip, not enough to bleed even I dont think but I had a fat lip for a few days, completely caught me off guard as it was very out of character, never has Monte been like that with me before, (accept when I was a little kid and was too short to reach the top of his cage, he didnt like me much then and would only let me pick him up off the floor when he had flown off his cage and I could offer him a ride back lol) and during those first few days in PA he was a bit rude with me but after that he warmed back up and has never done anything sense, I think he was just pissed I made him think I sent him away or something, Poor Monte

  • @taiitea-6936
    @taiitea-6936 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's a reason why 90% of caiques you see in cute bird videos are under 5 years old. At 4-6 years of age you get to see what a caique is really like. They turn hormonal, aggressive, and for lack of a better word bipolar. They will attack you, your other pets, anyone who visits your house, and will be at their loudest.
    They don't leave this stage until they're 10-12 years old. It's my firm belief that anyone can handle a young caique. Only a truly experienced and dedicated owner can survive the half-decade-long period where they're absolute terrors. I'm lucky enough to be adopting a black headed caique who is in her 20s. I'm at least her fourth home. At least. Do not take the phrase "these birds are not for everyone" as a challenge. It will only end in misery for you and your bird unless you're truly prepared and ready to put up with a terrible pet for about a 5-year span.
