Yep, definitely an experience. Floor and Marko always sounded great together, love the back and forth vocals here. Marko's Devil character is amorously pursuing Floor's Mermaid character. She is having none of it, and manages to get away. An old song that predates Marko in the band. From the 2nd album, Oceanborn in 1998. Studio version had Tarja and guest Tapio Wilska on vocals. Tuomas sang in studio on a few songs for the first album in 1997, he decided he wasn't good enough , and hasn't sung credited since. Between then and 2001, when Marko joined, they would use guests , like Tapio, for any male vocal parts.
Hi Nick,, my No 4 NW song. A vast improvement on the original version which had Tapio in Marco's part and Tarja never really gave it the energy and range Floor does. At the time I found it unremarkable in Nightwish terms but Floor and Marco gave it new life and it rose up my favourites list. The drumming is phenomenal and Floor explained the difficulty of timing those vocal onset you noticed.
Bassist Marko has said that this is a "love song", a poetic, mythological & metaphorical love song of a man (Devil) and woman (Mermaid of the Deep Dark Ocean- the Oceanborn) where she does not return his love or seductions. "I will die for the love of the mermaid, Her seduction, beauty and scorn. Welcome to the end of your life, HAIL the OCEANBORN". This creates chaos in the Mermaids world, “Disgraced is my virginity, death has woven my wedding dress”. As the Mermaid begs “Leave me be!” the Devil says “This apathetic life must drown”. The music then becomes intense and the stage lights turn BLUE (for the Ocean) as the Siren belts out these sharp staccato notes. In the end they break up "setting the dolphins free". Their "song" is over but will “echo” and carry on, "the eternity will begin once again in peace" they both move on. Metal Musical Theater at its best!!!
