  • Hey sailors,
As many of you know, I left my last cruise ship in November 2023 and haven't been back since. I believe I told you I was planning to stay at home for a while but I didn't tell you why so that is what I will discuss in this video, amongst other things.
Thank you so so so much for watching and always supporting me. You are the absolute best and I hope you're having the best week possible!

At 73 years of age, I found that you can't plan your life for single day events such as Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, and Funerals. I asked myself, "would it change the event either way if I was there or not"? Answer is a resounding NO, as the event is never about or for me. Me being there is only for SELF gratification. Live your life for YOU, as God forbid, it could end tomorrow.

I completely understand Lucy. I did one contract as Youth Staff with royal but then had to come home and put my life on pause because my dad's cancer was progressing a lot more than we hoped and he ended up passing away at the end of March last year. I was so glad to be home for the last 6 months of his life but I knew how much that he wanted me to go on another contract and managed to get a conract in Alaska/Australia starting that June. I'm at the place now where I don't want to do full contracts, I was on Mariner at the start of the year and it was awful, such a hard ship/contract, really long hours, no time off, short staffed. I don't want to put myself through that again. I've said to the scheduler that I'll do fills but I will not be away for christmas. My grandma is 98 next month and is definitely showing her age and I can't bare being away for too long , even though she says she wants me to go back I know she finds it hard when I'm away for so long. I don't think my ship journey is over just yet but things are going to have to change. It's not the same job as it was 2 years ago and I'm not the same person I was 2 years ago.

I’m 52 now and I worked as cruise staff on ships when I was 19-21, I often dream about those days, it was the best years of my life. There was truly something very special about being young, and carefree on ships. Especially meeting people from all over the world and they become your family.
It’s something that only people that of had that experience can understand.
I’ve traveled a lot since then and even taken many cruises but the funnest times were as crew. But your right when your at home you miss ship life and when you are on the ship you miss your home life and family.
Take care! Hope you enjoy all the days of your life on and off the ships.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my grandmother while I was studying overseas for grad school, and I’m so grateful that my in laws paid for me to fly back to the funeral. Just know, like my grandmother was, she was probably so proud of you going out at living life experiencing the world. My grandmother was an avid traveler before she reached old age and pushed all of her grandkids to go experience life. ❤ Just remember you are an amazing person and I’m sure she cherished the fact that her granddaughter was experiencing the world.

I quit cause of incompetence. I worked for Virgin as well and i couldnt stand having supervisors and managers above me who knew less than me. I had two supervisors who barely spoke english. The promotions were mostly based on how cushty you are with the managers. Luckly for me I can afford to quit ships but i feel for the people who cant.

I left in December. I now have a WFH job for a travel agent. I get paid the same as on ships but feels like less than half the work lol. Yes I’m not travelling but I also have benefits like paid annual leave which isn’t a thing on ships. And days off. Toward the end of my last contract, I was so burnt out all I wanted was sleep. I miss ship life less now than I did a few months ago. Too much bullying onboard. My gran has been diagnosed with dementia too, she’s my last grandparent left. There’s more to life than ships :) x

TBH - I was sad when you said your were ending your career ... I think you were really good at it and the content you made based on the work you were doing was always first rate. I love that for an extremely attractive women, you carry yourself with a sense of modesty and class that comes across on camera very well and very relatable. Side note - You did not owe an explanation, but the fact you did is beyond genuine. You always need to consider yourself first - but if you choose to come back to ships - I know your audience would be thrilled.

Lucy, Over a decade ago I lost my mother. I lived over 80 miles away from her and on the day that I heard that she had an accident and the paramedics were working to save her life. There was no way that I could have gotten there before she passed... I still miss her. And those are things in life, I have learned, that we must accept.
But the moral of that story is that you have to go and live your life, where ever it takes you.
I am willing to bet that one of the things that your grandmother loved most was when you got back and you would tell her your stories of where you went, the things you saw, the people you met, and all of those amazing pictures. I am sure that she missed you when you were away but just LOVED the idea that you were happy doing something that you loved so much that it put a smile on your face. And I am sure that she loved seeing you smile.
I'm also. pretty sure, that she wouldn't want you to stop living the life you loved because of her or the fear of losing someone else when you were away.
Please, don't live your life in fear. That takes the joy from life. And that's not a life.... It's just existing.

No Lucy, thank YOU! My deepest and most sincere condolences to you and your family. Losing a grandmother is one of the most painful losses in life. When you got teary-eyed at her letter, I immediately got emotional too. My gran passed away 7 years ago now, and I always say, "She was my second mother." Yesterday I found one of her old dresses in my mom's wardrobe and I felt how (I imagine) you felt when opening that letter.
But anyway, I'm thanking you Lucy, because in less than 2 weeks I will be embarking for my first contract and for the past week, I've been crumbling under the nerves of what I'm about to do, and watching this video, you've reminded me that I'm on the verge of doing something amazing, that not many people get to do. Suddenly, my nerves are gone and I'm now more excited than ever. Thank YOU, for this video...and for your channel as a whole. Lucy, you could have been down the street and not been "there" for your grandmother's passing. You can't blame yourself. When my grandfather was ill, I'd bought a plane ticket to fly to his home. I'd been there a few months before, but knew he was failing. He dies before I got there. Bottom line, live your life with what is right for you. If that is ships, go for it. If that is home for a season, do that. And yes, when you are valuable to a cruise line, they will sometimes meet your needs. I have a friend who did 4 months on, 2 off for many years in order to have time at home with his young kids.

As exciting as it is working on a cruise ship, you are away from home a lot of the time and miss out on other things. Lucy you should defo publish your diaries! A girl I worked with on cruise ships did just that, and although it was a good account of what she experienced and was very interesting, it wasn’t well written and didn’t succeed. There is definitely a market out there as it’s such a big industry!

My condolences on your loss, I wish you all the best on your current endeavor. I definitely understand perspective in regards to working on cruise ships my son is on his 11th contact, he’s currently working on Utopia of the seas and while he enjoys working on cruise ships it can be challenging. Lucy I miss your cruise ship vlogs and look forward to your eventual return😊😊

Lucy I’m mid 50s. I can promise you life is short. It’s a delusion of the young that it’s long. So many things I can’t do, so many more I want to do.

First would like to offer my condolences on the loss of your grandmother.
I know what you mean leaving something you love doing and not going back. Three years ago i retired from the army after 40+ years. Now it was all reserve time with a few deployments, but the last 12 years i was fortunate enough to be in a unit that alowed me to do a lot of 30 to 90 day trips. Now anytime pictures come up in my memories I realize how much I miss all of the training and my extended military family. True it was a lot of sacrifices from my family, and I did miss a lot of those activities. but in the long run it was worth the time i spent doing something I loved and got a lot out of in return. The one plus on your side is that you can return when you are ready.
Wantto thank you for all of the videos and information you put out. I is informitive and worth watching. Even though iI never have worked on and mmight never work on a cruise ship, Keep it up.

Funny thing about scrapbooking... I've taken pictures on all of my cruises. I occasionally review them to see where I've been and what I did. They're not as organized as your scrapbooks and certainly nor as pretty, but they're valuable for telling a story in time. Perhaps they will be even more valuable as I get older.

Dementia is so hard. My grandpa, who I am so close to, has the same. I am so happy for you that you are choosing to spend quality time with your family, time you won't get back.

Going on a cruise for me is a week or so not having to cook or clean or take responsibility for much and see a few places too. Relaxing and meeting new people and just having a lovely time. You can do this on a land vacation or you can stay home and do this but for most of us this is very unlikely. Your life, your choice. Whatever you do I hope you’re enjoying it.

You are a fantastic grandchild. Not sure how your mum's mum is doing but even if neither are able to express it now, I'm sure they would both be so proud.
This is going to sound so schmaltzy, but don't let comparison be the thief of joy, even (or maybe especially!) if the comparison is against your past self.

Lucy, my condolences on your loss. Only you can decide how to balance the factors in your life. I feel that you do not owe any of your viewers an apology; you made the right decision for you at the time and you were not ready to talk about it until now. Healthy boundaries about what you share and when are so important in life.
I hope that the blessings of being back in the UK for this phase of your life continue to come your way. As you say, the ships will always be there if it is right for you to go back in the future.
