    Did Sam drill any holes in the boat? His fans will get it 😂

    great video, and great to be linked via Sam's video. I recently started club racing as ballast crew ;) so was great to see you explain what was happening. Good luck with your next adventure!

      Thank you so much! I’m glad you found the explanation helpful. I started out as ballast too about 18 months ago, and I find it really helpful for my own sailing development to analyse what happened post race (and then I quiz more experienced crew members and steal their explanations 😂)

    I'm a longtime fan of Sam's and your video popped up in my feed after watching Sam's latest. Thrilling sailing and great explanations of what the crew is doing. Subbed! I might suggest a second camera to catch all the action.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for subscribing! Great idea about the second camera angle - I tried that for the Cervantes race we had a few weeks back, but the second GoPro went overboard during a gybe 😢 Working on alternatives, so a second camera angle should feature in most videos from now on!

      @@alexandrabevis GoPros and gybes have been problematic since the very early days of sailing. However, back then they were much more expensive and each boat only had one, which was invariably lost during a gybe, and this is why we don't have any sailing footage from history. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos and catching the new ones. Good racing, or whatever one says to racers to help them win!

    A lot of extra manures. You might want to use the Cunningham instead of raising and lowering the main halyard. You might also consider adding an adjustable tack on the asymmetrical. Again eliminate halyard adjustment. The loads on the halyards are infinitely greater the adjustments near the deck.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your advice, I’ll take it onboard. 😊 I usually adjust the halyard if it’s slipped, and the cunningham can provide something extra on top of that. I’ll have a look at the adjustable tack on an asymmetric, it’s not something I’ve come across before, how does it work? I’m still very new to this!

    At summer sailing school I raced a variety of day-sailors. We two or three slightly unregulated young teenagers were screaming and swearing at each other almost constantly. All forgotten after passing the finish line. Never first. Never last.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there certainly are a few heated moments when racing! I tend to edit any shouting/swearing out, as it’s not fair to other crew members who don’t necessarily want those moments broadcast to the internet, but just because it’s not in the videos it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen! But yes, mostly forgotten after passing the finish line. At the moment we tend to have similar results to you - never first, but occasionally last!

    Shared this on my WhatsApp group at my sailing club . Just wondering what boat was that.
    My last really competitive racing was 20 years ago on a limbo 9.9 round the island race and the royal escape race.

      Thank you so much for sharing, I really appreciate it! It’s a Jeanneau SunFast 3600! There’s a growing fleet of SunFasts both here in Guernsey and in the Solent! That’s awesome, both those races are on my bucket list!

      Glad you enjoyed the video! I started racing about 18 months ago, so it’s all still very new to me too! That’s partly why I started the channel - to document my journey into competing in some of the bigger races! Glad the video brought back some good memories! Plenty more like this to come!

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว

      The mute button is a wonderful thing! 😂 In all seriousness, whilst there is more talk onboard than comes across in this edit, over the last year we’ve worked really hard to make sure everyone knows what the course is, what sails we will be using for each leg, what the tides are doing, the tactics etc… And this has meant I have learnt a lot faster and am now starting to contribute to the calls on when we tack/gybe etc. Plenty more to learn, but good communication onboard and post-race analysis have been essential tools for my learning. 😊

  • @chhindz

    seems your starter watch was not synchronized. States 15 second to start, then start after 1 second. unless you cut some footage.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I must have cut some footage to up the tempo of the video. Although the mast instrument confusingly displays a different countdown timer to the main instruments in the cockpit! The wonders of configuring B&G!

    If your going to sail races like the faster. You all need to practice your boat handling. That only happens with practice, coming from a pro sailor. More communication onboard helps also, it looked like most didn’t know what was happening most of the time.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your advice! We’re getting out on the water as much as time allows, but in reality I’m still new to sailing so quite honestly I don’t understand 100% of what is going on 100% of the time - there’s lots to learn! And absolutely, communication is key and definitely something we are always working to improve!

    • @jamieblack9349

      @@alexandrabevis it all takes time. But worth it at the end. Next time the spinnaker is on the wrong side for hosting. Have the bowman wrap his arms around it as a sniffer from the bow. Once is half way up the spin will automatically deploy on the right side then he releases his arms. We would do that on the maxis. Saves sailing extra distance. I look forward to more videos in the future. The fast net is a fun race.

    • @alexandrabevis
      @alexandrabevis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohh thanks for the tip, I’ll pass that on to Ben! We usually ensure the spi is on the correct side, so this was actually the first time in a long time we’d made that mistake - as you can imagine, there were some words which got muted in the final cut! But it’s good to know we can fix it even it we are short on time. That must have been insane racing on the maxis - very jealous! Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoy our journey to the Fastnet. Any tips are always appreciated!
