    This classic video - originally titled as "House Search" - is a dramatized spy training film produced by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the intelligence agency of the United States during World War 2, and the predecessor of the modern Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It was released between circa 1942 and circa 1945.
    The film demonstrates proper and improper methods of searching houses, apartments, and hotel rooms for hidden information by contrasting the behavior of two fictional agents stationed in "a neutral capital in Europe." It shows creative ways to hide evidence of espionage activities, to trick counter agents so you know your place has been searched, to pass information to other agents in unsuspicious manner. It lists rules to follow during a house search, explains where to look for evidence, how to make it appear as if room has not been searched, what tools to have on hand and much more.
    Plot:
    The story begins with an American industrialist working in a neutral European country, who is working as an undercover OSS agent. He has hidden a purloined chemical sample and other info in his apartment, which is soon searched by an enemy agent, who knows a few things, but doesn't know enough to find what he's after. The tables are then turned and the enemy agent's rooms are searched by OSS operatives, who do a much better job finding secret information.
    BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
    Warrantless searches are searches and seizures conducted without search warrants. In the United States, warrantless searches are restricted under the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, which provides that, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
    Espionage & Counterintelligence:
    Espionage (colloquially, spying) is the obtaining of secret or confidential information without the permission of the holder of the information. Spies help agencies uncover secret information. Any individual or spy ring (a cooperating group of spies), in the service of a government, company or independent operation, can commit espionage. The practice is clandestine, as it is by definition unwelcome and in many cases illegal and punishable by law. Espionage is a subset of "intelligence" gathering, which includes espionage as well as information gathering from public sources.
    One of the most effective ways to gather data and information about the enemy (or potential enemy) is by infiltrating the enemy's ranks. This is the job of the spy (espionage agent). Spies can return all sorts of information concerning the size and strength of enemy forces. They can also find dissidents within the enemy's forces and influence them to defect. In times of crisis, spies can also oblige to steal technology and sabotage the enemy in various ways. Counterintelligence is the practice of various means of thwarting enemy espionage and intelligence-gathering. Almost all nations have strict laws concerning espionage and the penalty for being caught is often severe. However, the benefits through espionage are often great enough that most governments and many large corporations make use of it to varying degrees.

    Yeah, the secret chemical in the who-knows-what bottle, not smart. The thing is though, that trick with the toothpick is a trap that can't be put back, if done right, or even noticed. You would leave just the barest amount visible, so you can see it when you return. It doesn't have to be in the door either. Windows, drawers, cabinets, books, etc. They had know way of knowing for sure if they had sprung any. Could be a thread, hair, tiny shred of tobacco, etc.
    Also, I think I could tell if a couple of guys had spent hours in my hotel room shortly before I returned. Body odour, and grooming product smells, (lighted match!) unless they aired out the room, but all that window opening stuff is risky too. Could be observed.

    • @manp1039
      @manp1039 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      another interesting factor i am supposing that could be deployed is to put in a trap that not only could be obvious to the spy doing a search, but also is not fixable? Would there or could there be a reason to deploy such a trap if you know someone is or will be doing a search of your premises. So they know you know they are being searched?

    • @Catcrumbs
      @Catcrumbs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@manp1039 That would be silly. Richter's report shows that he hasn't an inkling that MacDermott is a spy. He surely thinks that devoting any more attention to him would be a waste of time. If Richter was shown a sign in flashing lights saying "I, MacDermott, am a spy," - as a trap such as you propose would effectively do - he would not and could not have formed such an opinion. Why would you want the enemy spy to know anything of what you know of him anyway?

      the chemical vial is likely an example of what it should be like when they cook it up with the instructions on the film. it doesnt have to be pristine. He likely didnt clean the cologne bottle so it still has left over cologne smell. It just smelled weird but didnt arouse suspicion from the search guy.

      can you imagine if there was a razor where they were sliding their hands underneeth.. would not bee good for the spy.. in today's world.. it would leave all kinds of DNA evidence as well as the spy could know their search has been compromised?? And the razor does not have to be obvious.. is could be a sharp cabinet nail that is jetting trhough on unner surface of the cabinet?

      If they actually showed the full search it would be like half a day and theyd have a spotter outside and at his work place. Also it seems like the best place to hide might be in plain sight like in the crack of a floorboard or on the ceiling that needs a stool to get to painted over with chalk color a small thing like the film would be invisible. Only the most keen eyed or experienced would check every centimeter of the place. The more junk you clutter the place with the harder it would be to search it all. Hoarding random junk could be a valid tactic.

      @@Andytlp The spies should see my trunk and my office workspace.
      They'd be "Yeah, we looked. There's nothing there. Well, actually, there's everything there. Everything. No, I'm not kidding. There's no way of searching it without a team of 10, a Bobcat or small front loader, and maybe 150 boxes. Either that or someone's already tossed the place or is using it to store 10 others some stuff on top. Let them win the war. We're beat."

Great information piece regardless of the comment section.

    There is one thing I really have to say: nowadays, when they make movies set in the 1940s or earlier, they get everything right-the costumes, the cars, and every detail-except the language. I hear a lot of casual English spoken that doesn't fit the time period being depicted. For example, I hear the expression "please don't be silly" used a lot in real older movies like this one. However it is non-existent in a movie that the setting is supposed to be from that era. Are the directors and producers intentionally making the dialogue sound present-day as an artistic choice, or is it a mistake on their part? If a movie is set in 1945, I want the actors and the language to sound exactly like it, as it throws me off.
    Because, one thing I enjoy with older movies the most is the language.

    21:23 That film not only is heat proof, but it must have teleported itself from the outside of window rim. Unless the first agent moved it- to confuse you in spite for using him as a bad example. 🤣 … and changed the desk, emptied the bookcase. Its not nice to make fun of people… and the bloody bed, etc. Two different movies. Unless the agents are searching their colleague’s room. The plot thickens. 😮
