  • Astronauts are to make an emergency landing after their Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned on lift-off to the International Space Station.
Nasa said there was an "issue with the booster" and the "crew is returning to Earth in a ballistic descent mode".
Search and rescue teams are in the air and heading towards the expected touchdown location, Nasa added.
The rocket took off from Kazakhstan with Russian Cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and US astronaut Nick Hague on board.

Let's keep in mind this is only the second time in the Soyuz's 51 year history that it's had to do a launch abort. That's some stellar reliability right there
That being said, hope an investigation finds the source of the problem, and good thing no one was killed. This is why launch abort systems are a thing

I agree, Paul Gibbons, the Soyuz is a much safer launch vehicle for humans than the shuttles were. The Soyuz has a launch
Escape system that the shuttles did not and 3 times now in 50 years, crews have survived a launch booster failure, which
They would have not survived without one. The Challenger crew stood absolutely no chance at all after the explosion, and the same
Was the case for the Columbia crew. Because of its design, the Shuttle was always vulnerable to a catastrophic failure of the
Thermal Protection system on re entry due to debris falling off the fuel tank. The Soyuz vehicle does not have the same problem
Because it is launched on top of its booster, meaning it cannot be hit by debris during ascent.

Interesting Timing... the safest Space Transport vehicle in the World had a sabotage and a malefunction in one month after 30 years. And in 3 months the US will start their new generation after using the russian sojus

Certainly the most proven and reliable system to-date; I heard it's 43 years relatively safe launches?

    • @Diggnuts
      @Diggnuts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

This will not impact the safety numbers at all. There have roughly been 1700 Soyuz missions, so the success/failure rate will shift by 0.0X%.
In fact, I would argue that with a successful abort, it shows how safe this vehicle is.

@Lars Rudolf , this is actually Russian fault, we know from rocket enthusiast that the Russian are planning to change their rocket technology, they probably will remove that 4 boosters (the "X" you see in the video), so it might be that they did something to the rocket and the rocket broke. Of course this coincide with the changes happening in the US because the Russian are probably motivated to improve their rocket to compete with the US.

Malfunction does not effect safety record if everyone on board survives the. malfunction. A malfunctioning rocket is just a bomb, so having any survival rate is arguably MORE prestigious than having perfect reliability.

This is a real shock really. Although it shouldn’t, considering it was only a matter of time. So relieved they’re both alright, but all the more reason to feather develop and make the switchover to SpaceX. These rockets I’m afraid, are now no longer practical.
