Some of the logic with Best Matches is simply putting something good with something bad or to be more specific "things you like" with "things you hate". It's like mixing nice/cute things (Rabbit) with mean/violent things (Tank). Kinda like offsetting the two sides, though there is a point where the logic ends and stuff is being tossed together. There's a bit more to it in the context of the show that explains even why some of them are tossed together, but that's how they were comboed in terms of logic, at least with the early sets.

the Best Matches have one biotic side and one abiotic side, that's the main rule. It's pretty broad haha, but I personally enjoy using that to make strange and unusual combos, that's a lot more fun

Basically an Alien parasite tricked an Astronaut through questions about 30 living things, and 30 man-made things to destroy them. Rabbit is Destroyed by Tank, Panda is destroyed by Rocket, Hawk is destroyed by Gatling and so on, thus creating the best matches. However, after some combinations, the Astronaut realised the intention of the Alien and just went random bs go to the alien to mess with him. The Alien was still able to make leaps in logic for the man-made things to destroy the living things.

The story elaborates on it. But the main thing you will notice on best matches is that they are a Living/Non-living pair that compliment or contrast each other, kind of.
