Just got my kinks lola box recently and looking to buy this and the Lennon pob box. It's a good time to be an obsessive fan of classic English rock.
First WHO SELLOUT I bought was a Decca US Stereo version at Sam Goody Records in the early 70's. It was a cutout version. I think I paid 99 cents for it. This box set is a bit much with the price. I have the Deluxe CD and the Polydor LP reissue and I just picked up the 2LP Mono version that just came out. With that being said the late 90's reissue CD with all the extra songs is the best buy IMO. All the extra songs are great. Some, like Melancolia and Jaguar should have been on the regular LP. Also Hall of the Mt King is excellent. All that said the new Mono and Stereo versions have some interesting extra tracks but the selection of extras are no way better then the 90's reissue. Strange thing about that 90's CD though, I had to take it back like three times because the CDS had a skipping problem on I Can See for Miles that seemed to be a bad press. Funny though, later on I gave it to a friend cause it played through without incident in his car CD player. Finally, anyone have any idea where the neck pendants Keith and Pete are wearing on the Sellout cover originated? Keith's looks to be a Tiki of some sort ,but I have never seen another like it. And Townsend's looks like some kind of Celtic or Anglo Saxon symbol but that also I have never seen another of.

It's a shame that they didn't reprint the Haplash and the Coloured Coat's promo poster for the I Can See For Miles single cause I think it's a better work of psychedelic art than the butterfly poster insert that was included with original copies of The Who Sell Out. It's a shame as well that the demos disc doesn't have the demo for Rael or Our Love Was but I'm happy the demo for I Can See For Miles is on there cause that's been circulating in low quality on bootlegs for years, this new version is a good upgrade.
Good Advertising, I expect Townshend and Daltrey will now sell shedloads of this package. Will Venal (sorry Vinyl) Rewind get paid for services rendered...Hmmm...I wonder?

These two versions make little sense to me. Why include the 7inch singles with the deluxe cd box and not the vinyl edition? Why not issue a deluxe vinyl box with the book? This seems designed to make you purchase both, even if you have no interest in the cds.
Well. You made me curious about checking out Who's version of In the Hall of the Mountain King. Comment: Nothing good. I do find it funny that it's the playing and styling that Pink Floyd made a career out of, I kept expecting it to break into Intersteller Overdrive at any moment. But it didn't work for the Who as they don't have a keyboardist. Or the ability to vocalize. Or know how to play off of the main theme before a musical breakdown back into it. The piece stopped at "main theme to breakdown" and stayed there.
Sorry! But it appears that there was typical millennial lack of preparation here if any at all ! It's like you were handed cue cards minutes before the shooting of this video. While you might actually like this product, and the material it contained, and what you have heard of The Who's music, you definitely appear to not only not to be a Who fan, but only minimally familiar with their work at best. This is the favorite Who album of many a hard-core Who fan (I being one of them) who have waited for this long overdue release for "nigh' on a year".
Because I have to pay for my copies, I feel that I can be a little more honest about them. First, the super deluxe boxed set is great, but it is overkill. The biggest highlights of this set is all the extras. Although unfortunately in mono, the 2 7"-ers are pretty cool. As with the 2LP deluxe set, all the records were mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road, although not 1/2 speed like many of the premium to be mastered at Abbey Road. The 45's sounded great, probably due to the 45 rpm speed. The "Magic Bus" 45 was a bit distorted. The packaging quality of the 2LP deluxe set is great, but due to the lower quality of the vinyl mix used in the E.U., there is lots of annoying surface noise in-between tracks. This wouldn't have been an issue if these LP's had been pressed by RTI or QRP in the U.S. or even Pallas of Germany. As far as overall sound quality is concerned, Miles did a fantastic job of mastering. As I record all of my CD's and records to hard drive at CD sound quality, I didn't have to run any of the records through a noise reduction program, which alludes to their quality pressings. LP 1 was a great pressing, flat and properly centered. LP2 was OK but had an edge warp which I could see the effect on the graph of my recording. But the only time I could see it was in-between the tracks of the first 2 songs on each side. Looking at the listing in Discogs, they were short on information about the selections on LP1. As with the original release, the new re-issues had stuff added between the main tracks and Discogs doesn't even list them. Discogs doesn't even list track #25 on LP1, "Track Records Runout Groove". This track is similar to what The Beatles did on their "Sgt. Pepper's...." record album. Although fairly well made, the 2LP deluxe version falls short of being considered audiophile, but had they used a higher quality of vinyl mix, it would be audiophile.
Great vid Geek! This is my favourite Who album because I am a massive fan of Pirate Radio history. I'm currently writing my history thesis on their role in British culture in the 60s. Also on the topic of the history, the main issue was that until 1967 the BBC didn't play continuous music at all. They only had dedicated shows, mainly around the weekend, including session programmes, but these were probably about 5 hours total. The Pirate Radios filled the void for more continuous music and forced the BBC to change it's approach in 1967. They also brought the Top 40 shows from US into Britain. They also, especially John Peel, played more experimental music that would never be heard on the BBC. You can actually find some vintage broadcasts here Radio Caroline - www.mixcloud.com/discover/radio-caroline/ John Peel - theperfumedgarden.blogspot.com/search?q=1967
