  • FRÝDLANT is one of the most important historic complexes in Northern Bohemia! The most important of them are; Frydlant Castle, the Dean's Church, the old town with Masaryk Square and the lookout tower on Resselův vrch hill. It is a city where almost every street breathes history.
    In the past, Frýdlant was for many years the administrative center of the entire region. The first written mention of the town of Frýdlant dates back to 1278, when the local castle was bought by the Biberštejn family from the Czech king. The history of Frýdlant is also connected with the name of Albrecht von Wallenstein. His seat was Jičín, but Albrecht was called the Duke of Frýdlant.

    1:09 Cemetery in Frýdlant
    The cemetery surprises with its size, beautiful appearance and the number of once grand tombs, and there are over a hundred of them. Everything changed after 1945, when the graves were neglected and destroyed. Only in 2016, thanks to the project of primary school students, all abandoned graves were renovated and tidied up.

    A stone lookout tower from 1907 stands on the top of Resselův vrch, to the north above Frýdlant. The observation tower is 21 m high.

    The dominant feature of Frýdlant at the market square is the Neo-Renaissance town hall, built in the years 1893-1896. Outside, the town hall is decorated with statues of Justice and Sacrifice, in the hall there are beautiful stained glass windows and a bust of Albrecht von Wallenstein.
    The Town Hall has a 48 m high corner tower with a clock mechanism and a viewing gallery open to the public. Every hour a bugle call sounds with different melodies from the top of the tower.

    In the main hall of the town hall, there is the "Wedding Hall" with a three-part stained glass window and antique, original furniture. There is also the Town Museum and tourist information in the town hall.

    The Frýdlant square (náměstí T. G. Masaryk) is surrounded by pretty tenement houses, mainly Baroque ones - two of them are occupied by the restaurant and hotel "Bílý Kůň".

    At the back of the square, above the Smědá River, there is the Renaissance Dean's Church. Finding the Holy Cross. The construction was completed in 1551. The most valuable element of the church is the chapel with the Redern family tomb from 1566, which is one of the most beautiful Renaissance monuments in Bohemia.
    In the church square, you can see a Marian column from the 18th century.

    In the half-timbered house (the oldest building in Frýdlant) there is a mechanical nativity scene with an exceptionally preserved old mechanism, made by Gustav Simon (1873-1953), he built it for 60 years. On a 4x2m surface, he placed 130 movable and 50 static figures.

    The history of the castle began in the 13th century. Albrecht Wallenstein, an expressive figure from the Thirty Years' War, played an important role in its history. Today, the palace houses collections of porcelain and glass, furniture, palace equipment and weapons. There is also a gallery of paintings by baroque painters and a unique collection of pipes.

    Frýdlant chateau and chateau rises on a basalt rock above the Smědá River. The basalt pillars visible under the castle are called "devil's organ".
