  • Adding Cherry Shrimp To a Betta Tank | Nano Aquarium
In this video we add some cherry shrimp to my nano Betta aquarium. We have to change over the filter to a sponge filter to make is safer for shrimplets and also give it a good clean. Cherry shrimp are a very good beginner shrimp and are very tolerant of temperature variations, which is ideal for this tank. Hopefully the betta fish will get on with them and not eat the cherry shrimp!

I remember when I put shrimps in my betta tank, the betta immediately started chasing the biggest shrimp female the game last for more than 5 minutes but then shrimp decided to commit suicide and jumped out of the tank, I remember it was a big jump

With a 'hang on back' filter it is always a good idea to put a small sponge over the water intake, but sponge filters work fine too.

Looking forward to seeing how these shrimp do. Hopefully the betta doesn't eat them!

I've tried Betta with cherry shrimps in a 55 gallon but i've never had success long term. The adult shrimps were perfectly fine, the Betta tested them but they were always able to get away so he eventually just left them alone. It was the baby shrimps the Betta would go after. I never saw the Betta actually eat the baby shrimps but the shrimp colony never really grew and declined over time. The shrimps were having babies but few were making it to adulthood. After the Betta was gone, the shrimp colony bounced back.

Yeah i think this will be the case here, probably just have adults for a while and the babies getting eaten

I feel like I got lucky. My Betta is pretty old and grumpy but she and my guppies completely ignored the CS I got. (And don't worry, they don't have fancy fins and I've never had problems with them and bettas) There's plenty of plants but they still happily swim in the open and none of my fish care. Thank god, I love seeing them swim around so openly. Only problem is when my Betta dies (she's getting old) and going to have to be careful to get another Betta compatible with cherry shrimp.... Hmmmm.

If you can put a small air stone inside your sponge on the end of the line it helps with noise from the large bubbles and also looks better than a volcano of bubbles. Nice Tank and lovely Betta

Lol I added 2 cherry shrimp to my 8 gallon with 1 betta and 1 small snail along with 3 ghost shrimp. Betta immediately became super territorial and chased around the big female cherry shrimp til he bit her on the back and she died! Then he tried going after the big ghost shrimp. Wouldn't recommend adding shrimp if your betta is super territorial and mean 😢😭😭

So true. My halfmoon girl is NOT happy about the 3 cherries I added to her 5 gallon tank. There’s driftwood, live plants, fake plants, and 2 big hideaways so plenty of hiding places for the shrimp. One shrimp is currently hiding just out of reach on the heater suction cup and the other two have disappeared. They might have gotten gobbled up. My girl is still searching everywhere for them and it’s been about an hour.

HOB filters just seem to drop the water down where it's inflow area is and doesn't seem to get any decent water movement around the tank as a whole.

I just got 6 cherries shrimps today with a baby guppy(was planning on being a feeder to keep focus away from shrimp) in my 3.5 gallon tank and my betta couldn't care less about the cherry shrimp! The shrimp will literally walk/swim over him and he chases the baby guppy but eventually gives up. I low key hope he catches the fish cause I don't want it to get bigger and for the betta to eventually catch it and torture it instead of eating it one bite. Might get lucky and he might just acclimate to the guppy(looks female) but I don't see that happening in a 3.5 gallon. And this is day one he might get hungry and eat 1 one of the shrimps as a snack. Will keep updating

He's just ignoring them now, so I imagine he will leave them alone. However I do not expect shrimplets to survive. I have seen a lot of Betta kept with shrimp successfully but also many that have not. As you say it's down to the personality of the individual Betta, and I feel that this one is curious but not aggressive
