Jordan’s right on point. I never cleaned my sneakers. I worn them out with distinctive patinas that I created. I only wiped off dusts with a damp towel and called it a day. You’d be surprised there are high end sneakers that have been made to give that worn-out look.

would it be possible to dive a little deeper in these weatherproofing sprays ? I know that some are siliconee based, and that Taragon spray is a nano coating. These types work very differently, and one type may be not so good for your shoes.
I've always been very vigilant to weatherproof my shoes, even the ones I wear to cut grass. Some sneakers I've had for years and years. They wear out from the inside long before the outside look like they're showing significant wear. I've been accused of doing yard work in new shoes...nope. shoes are expensive so why not take care of your investment ?

How do you clean them? I've been told many times to just throw them in the washer but I don't trust the washer that much. Then, I've attempted to scrub them in the bathtub. That seems to work the best even though it's a pain.
Perfect timing, just bought some new Adidas originals in a lilac suede and have been research protection sprays! Thank you for the recommendation, beyond helpful :)
A great product. Just use it sparingly, a very lightly mist on black/dark sneakers, as it can dry to crusty white on rubber parts like mudguards, toecaps and outsoles etc. I use it on my canvas military boots, like Palladium, to keep them looking fresher for longer.

Effectiveness of many of these sprays (Tarrago included) is based on fluorocarbon polymers, which are rumored to be highly toxic. I would use a respirator in a well ventilated space, if I was forced to apply them. Love your content, and I hate to be a party pooper.
Great advice. I posted this before in an older video, but I tend to wear out the cup soles on my nice leather sneakers before the uppers even look bad. I take care of the leather sneakers like I would my leatehr dress shoes. I would love to see a video on a cup sole re-sole. Can a nice leather sneaker with a stiched on cup sole be replaced?
In regards to if it can be resoled, it matters on if it's something like a Goodyear welt, a stitch that a local cobbler would know. Then yes it's absolutely possible. As long as it's not cemented
Lol, wish there was a place where people could post 1000's of videos showing every cup sneaker ever made being resoled, even cemented ones using solvents to break the bond or heat for vulcanized attachment, oh well, till then I guess I'll go watch how to tie plastic bags to my feet
Wish i had found you long ago! PLEASE HELP! Ive used Scotch Guard & it yellowed my white shoes... Why??? Im terrified to try anything since. Purchasing the nano spray youre advertising (amazon - trenton & heath kick-backs??) - fingers crossed it doesnt discolor my chucks! If i even have the guts to try it....ugh
Proud owner of many pairs of 990 New Balance dad shoes. I keep three pair in service. The newest pair are for PT (military term, Physical Training), one pair, the second oldest, no longer good for exercise. This pair is for Saturday errands, etc. The third pair used to be the Saturday pair but now is so bad it is for the yard, the work shop, any painting, staining, cement work, cleaning tasks. Also, they are fine kayak fishing shoes, floating the river shoes, etc. Running kills my shoes off. 6 months and they get retired. Been running since age 12, 28yrs in the Army, and now, at age 60, still going. The shock absorption is gone after 6 months. The wife throws out excess pairs if I do not.
🙋🏻♀️ Question, I have that exact pair of white Converse and my husband usually just tosses them in the washer. Once I spray the “clean” shoes if they get dirty how do I clean them? I appreciate these videos as I just started creating a minimal wardrobe and I only own 9 pair of shoes. As I replace them with something new these videos will help me give the proper care to my new purchases. THANK YOU SO MUCH 😊
I find silicone tent spray works perfect on canvas shoes, not sure I want spray on my leather though, good ol' wax and mink oil servers me well for that.
Ok, on the topic of "how-to" videos, show us how to remove a faint mist of BLACK Saphir suede conditioner from the vamp of a desert tan suede boot. Yeah, I was one of those guys who didn't realize there were color options and accidently bought BLACK, and was sickened to see my brand spanking new boots get fogged black. I've not even worn them (still). Thanks.
When I was younger, I used to not buy any "shoe protectors" because I was told, by my genius brothers and geniuses friends, it's just something that makes your shoes get dirty faster because it's sticky and the dirt sticks to your shoes. Then, you have to go back to the store to buy new shoes. So, these "geniuses" were the reason a LOT of my shoes didn't last as long as they should've lasted.
put weatherproofing spray on your shoes, purses, bags, and coats. it can also help on some furniture like couches, chaise lounges, etc. use the appropriate spray for the material it is being used on.
Not sure if y’all have done this or not but would be neat to see one of you do a left shoe and the other do the right shoe, and let subscribers do a poll on who’s shoe they like the most, could do it on a cheap pair of Walmart or target shoes
I always use a weatherproof spray on my shoes before the first wear. I unfortunately am a bit hard on them... The soles start to lose cushion within a year, which is about the time the weatherproofing has worn off and they are starting to look worse for wear. They become a great pair of yardwork shoes for the next season. Rinse and repeat... Walmart shoes wouldn't make it to the point of the weatherproofing wearing out
How about hiking shoes? Most of them are like goretex, hence pretty rugged to begin with. They don’t need to look nice, but to keep the feet warm & dry in sometimes extremely horrible conditions. Also the products to protect them should never be flammable because fire is often the only way to dry them.
I saw that you probably won’t ever resole something like blundstones and convert them to GWY, does that include converting sneakers like some Indonesian craftsmen? It costs an additional $100 in customs to send sneakers to Adit and the Bandits on IG over in Indonesia and that’s on top of shipping, paying for their expert crafting, and all for a comparatively cheap sneaker to modify
So when you buy new smooth leather shoes, you condition them and then add the weatherproofing spray? How does this affect future shoe cream/wax use on those shoes?
I generally don't bother to take care of my sneakers... I tend to wear the soles through inside of about 8 months(quickest pair I wore through was about 4 months...), so they just don't last long enough...
When I was playing in my local kid basketball, those converse chuck Taylor’s shoes were “state of the art”. 😆 We had a choice of white or white. Shoe care was taboo then, you wanted some dirt and mud on your shoes.
Do what Trent says! I have been doing this for years and people always ask how I keep my sneakers looking new and this is how! I tend to apply once a month in the wetter months and once every couple of months in the warmer drier months and always always always when fresh out of the box! Oh and one thing, always shake the can well as I have found this makes a difference!
Hi Trent. What are your thoughts on leather paint ? I have a pair of white and red leather Asics sneakers that I've had for years and despite my best efforts white shoe cream just wasn't working anymore to conceal the places where the white dye had worn off. I was talking to my cobbler about this and he sold me a jar of leather paint. I carefully painted them and now they look brand new again and they seem to take polish and conditioner just fine. Have a great weekend. : )
In my experience it does not, however! There are some sprays that have colour added so be careful when buying, especially in shoe stores at point of sale as I have found this is most often where those sprays are to be found!
They were definitely sneakers when I was a kid. I was silent walking around in them. Today, you might as well refer to anything I put on my feet as clogs, because that’s what I sound like when walking the dog.
I have never found a Weather protective spray that works at all. 10 minutes after you apply it if you spill wine on your white shoes, it looks blood red. As far as I’m concerned, they are all worthless
This is a good video for some people! I only purchase genuine leather sneaker, boots, shoes. I don't even buy athletic or man-made goods. I do have a cheap pair of sneakers for the weather. Not going to waste money waterproofing them. I do take good care of my beautiful leather goods. I do have a question about an exotic leather.
Weatherproofing is great. But i’m generally worried about handling something with my bare hands that has been sprayed with nano particles. Human skin is not really made to protect us from this kind of tiny man made particle.

I have not experienced any problems with this. I think with the fabric the weave is still too coarse to be blocked by the spray. The spray just coats the fabric not the tiny holes between the weave if that makes sense?
There are shoes with a type of leather construction that rely on breathability to not get clammy, so I'm concerned about this as well.
I would imagine that it’s a trade off. Great question!!
But in the gym, weather and the environment is not a concern! So, if your worried about breathability, I would not spray them, and just buy new shoes regularly. A new regular pair won’t bankrupt you😊

Leather paints do a good job putting the color back into many leathers.
We actually use a spray paint, but the truth is that if your paint is allowing conditioning and cream, I’d say that it’s just fine.

Weatherproofing spray or wax
