While I'm not attempting hour records, I think we can all relate to those times when we're pushing ourselves beyond our perceived limits. I had goosebumps watching your final lap. Thanks.
That was one of the greatest amateur sporting achievements I've ever seen. Merckx said it was the worst thing he'd ever done and Wiggins hated it, chapeau and double chapeau Ollie, what an incredible performance. Well done is insufficient.
Hats off to Ollie but lets not forget that both Boardman and Obree were amateurs when they started duking it out for the hour record. IMHO, Boardman's hour record in the superman position that he did in Manchester in 96 should stand as the current record.
As a fellow "physiologically unremarkable amateur" I have to say that was absolutely amazing! YOU brother have inspired this middle aged American, who started exercising again to stay off medications, to keep going with a smile. OLLIE, OLLIE, OLLIE!!!!
47 kph is still a massive achievement given the fact that he ended up only 4 percent slower than Eddie Merckx, with just 3 months training as an "ungifted" amateur rider. You really upped your game as a cyclist - with a little help on the tech front - and we all know how hard it is to achieve only little gains when you've reached a certain level.
I wouldn't compare it to Merckx, as Merckx road on a traditional track bike. I would compare it to some other attempts by professionals, like Marc Dubois setting a Swiss record at 48.337, less than a km better than Ollie. There are some serious attempts just below or above 50K/hr setting national records, like Wojciech Ziolkowski in Poland, Gustav Larsson (Sweden). Ollie can proudly stand in between those guys.
Absolute magic. In my books Ollie you are a STAR ! The fact that you really had nothing to gain is truly inspiring, which makes the commitment to the project and seeing it through to the last second all the more admirable.
Great effort! This just shows how cycling is really about the athlete, not the equipment. Eddy had a steel round tubed bike with drop bars, box section rims and even flat pedals, and still went 2km/h faster, that is insane!
I noticed he beat the time of Anquetil. What does that suggest? Also Merckx rode at altitude, which is a substantial difference. I think the technological and training advances are clearly apparent in allowing an amateur to touch greatness.
He didn't beat the great and underrated Ferdi Bracke (48.093) either, who broke the record in Rome (hence, at low altitude), and did so 5 years before Merckx.

go Ollie blooming well done for all of that just so wished we could of got there to see it all happening, keep up the training and your smash it soon and i would like to hope we can be there to see you do it
This movie has moved me more than it should have. I have no shame in admitting I was weeping by the end. Following immense health issues with Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis (where walking was not taken for granted), your team's dedication and teaching on GCN and on this magnificent challenge has spurred me on to start riding again, with exhilarating results. That challenge was awesome... perhaps you did not beat the immense Merckx... but psychologically, you made a huge step. Well done.

First GCN video to make me legit cry tears of joy. Well done sir, you're a true inspiration for all of us. You should be deeply proud of what you accomplished.
This has been such a great series. Thank you for bringing this to life and congratulations to you and the entire production team.
Thank you GCN for your exceptional film making, you continue to set the bar, not just for cycling but all of sport. I am consistently moved by your storytelling, camera work and editing. This was a particularly interesting series, hats of to Ollie for the attempt. It reaffirms how great Eddy Merckx really was in all aspects of our sport!
+1
Great effort.
To bad you didn't make it.
But it's a great job.
And it has been so fun to follow this series.
Keep up the great work.
Congratulations Ollie, this was a great series from GCN. You may haven’t beat Eddy, but you came really close. I really hope there will be a part 2 of this series.
go Ollie blooming well done for all of that just so wished we could of got there to see it all happening, keep up the training and your smash it soon and i would like to hope we can be there to see you do it
This movie has moved me more than it should have.
Well done.
This made me very emotional. Congratulations Ollie! That was a titanic effort. Coming that close to the very best cyclist this world has ever seen, but not beating him is not a fail, it's an amazing achievement!
Great job Ollie! Thanks for taking us along with you. It was awesome.
Good job !
You know so much more than you did three months ago
No amount of money could buy that.
Excellent work!
Ollie... You... Complete... Me... Grammy-worthy series. Awe-inspiring odyssey. Heart-felt thanks.
That was amazing! I loved the whole series and this was the perfect culmination!! Thank you so much Ollie and team!!!
GCN should make a full documentary of this attempt for TV. This is very motivational.
Ollie, very inspiring for all of us. From a fellow chemist, you were definitely in a pi star state!
Chapeau Ollie. I can't begin to imagine just how painful that must have been. Its been fabulous watching the build up and impressive to see the result. Thank you.
Wow CONGRATS Ollie for this great effort, amazing work, even without beating Eddy.
And it’s also amazing how The Sufferfest can do this but struggling completely with something easy like a Apple TV app.
Truly inspirational. The best challenge that GCN has undertaken. Ollie you are clearly a hell of a lot more than a gifted amateur. This is something that you will be able to show your future grandchildren. Chapeau Ollie
Brilliant effort Ollie. You certainly put your heart and soul into that, chapeau 👏👏👏👏
Well done Ollie from Newcastle, NSW, you gave it one hell of a nudge. Came up short on the day but only against the greatest of all time. You should be exceptionally proud of yourself.
For me personally, you were the best of GCN when you got here (for me specifically) and this story is some of the best videography, plus your character, humor, eloquence, and attitude make you my favorite. Sorry folks.
What a fantastic effort. The lead up to the day, the training, the high tech clothing, the wind tunnel testing, the whole thing was well put together. Getting so close to Eddie's time is remarkable and a great achievement.
Absolute incredible effort. The commitment and dedication you put into this challenge is amazing. Congrats on you ride.
Absolutely outstanding! What an accomplishment, I’m proud of you, Ollie! Thanks for doing this Ollie, GCN, et al!
Congratulations Ollie whether you wanted to or not, you have been pure inspiration 💜💕
Ollie! That was absolutely smashing! Congratulations on a supreme effort of physical, mental, and emotional achievement. Regards to you and your able team; it's been a joy watching your thoughtfulness throughout the process. Time for a beer. Bravo!
Olli - an inspiring figure for all of the GCN family with this attempt!
