    A friend and I were at a little beer joint in San Antonio back in the 70's and the place had 2 bar tables. It was a week day and early in the afternoon so only a couple of guys were in the place. I put in a quarter and racked em' so my friend could break. We always went with the 'knock the crap out of the head ball' break. My buddy did just that and made all of the stripes, and all but 3 of the solids, 8 ball included. All that remained was 3 solids and the cue ball. The sound of so many balls going in was amazing. We couldn't believe it. We were high 5-ing and going nuts, but the only other 2 guys in the place had just left before it happened. We were like, "Wow, did you see..." no one to share it with. It was the most amazing break I ever saw.

    8 ball will go enough that it's probably worth it to use, but keep in mind you are much more likely to get the cue ball tied up at the bottom of the table. If your opponent can run and you don't have an opening shot - game over.

    • @LearnBilliards
      @LearnBilliards  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use low left to keep the ball towards the center of the table. Give it a try. If you are breaking from the left side of the table. Do opposite for right side of the table.

    • @mattmason1694
      @mattmason1694 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Learn Billiards thanks for the tip. I tried it and can keep the ball closer to mid table, but still lose a lot of energy getting to the rack. Not getting the spread I'd like to see. To each his own!

    • @LearnBilliards
      @LearnBilliards  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattmason1694 it dose take some getting use too but stick with it. Try hitting the ball at 5 o'clock of hitting from the right side of the table and 7 o'clock from the left side for greater cue ball control

      I feel like I make a ball on the break 70% of the time hitting the head ball and I agree putting any English on is going to take power from the break. He might have loosened the rack--if the head ball or the one behind it is off by a hair... the 8 ball comes out on that side towards the side pocket if breaking from the opposite side. If you play him again, keep an eye on his rack for tightness.

  • @BigJoeGTO

    So why wasn't this turtle rack made to accommodate 9 ball too? Also, I've been hitting the second ball on my breaks for decades. One time made three 8 balls on the break in a row. By hitting the second ball it creates a sideways sweep of the balls between the two narrower rails. This way you get a lot more bang for your break going sideways because the balls are crashing each other quicker...when balls have to travel the long ways up and down on a break they lose their momentum.

    • @LearnBilliards

      Hey Chris. I usually see folks put the cue ball in the front of the kitchen, anywhere from 3 fingers to 1 ball's distance away from the rail - for this break. You want to hit low on the cue ball, like a draw shot, to help avoid scratching in the corner. Some folks add outside english to keep cue ball from ending up near foot rail. Or inside english to go to the foot rail & come back up with the cue ball.

    Sorry but this is definitely not the best 8 ball break. There are good reasons you don't see pros breaking this way and there's 3 things I don't like about using that break (no, I'm not a pro). (1) Zero cue ball control (2) Higher percentage for a scratch (3) Making the 8 ball on the break isn't how I like to "win" a game anyway because it's mostly luck. You may make some balls this way but good luck getting a decent shot afterwards.
