It is anticipated that Trump, the businessman, would demand Japan to cover the costs of the U.S. forces stationed in the country.
That’s why Ishiba talks about building a security framework that doesn’t rely solely on U.S. forces.
While it might seem like mere rhetoric, it could serve as a bargaining chip for negotiating with Trump on equal footing.

Unfortunately, that's an impossible mission for the present Japan. If Japan wants to become a game-changer in East Asia, should've built a more powerful military. However, many Japanese weapon developers couldn't have a chance to export military weapons. Once Japan was a war criminal nation in WW2, so, many politicians and citizen groups have opposed becoming military superpower so far.
Therefore, many industrial companies that could manufacture weapons had to supply limited army & naval equipment for only Japanese military organizations. However, most weapons are very expensive and maintenance systems are not so good. Thus, Japan had to import lots of American weapons through the US's support. Furthermore, many Japanese weapon builders don't have enough experience to supply massive quantities of weapons in a short period. International weapon sellers must have a few capabilities such as a fast and automatic system based on AI.
To be honest, Japan's current manufacturing basis based on digital capacity is not so good. Most Japanese corporations and government organizations have depended on traditional analog systems. Of course, the present PM Ishiba Shigeru is a more outstanding person than previous Japanese leaders. But if he would like to make Japan a game-changer in East Asia, there are lots of obstacles, and he must remember that. He should solve those things first before dreaming of his great plan.

The difficulty about many of these things does not lie in the diet they lie within the reluctance of Japanese people to re-militarization. Why do I say this? Even when they had a majority komeito is actually not in favor of revising the Constitution or re-militarizing. So they didn't do it when they were a majority, but could they do it now that they're a minority? If it were only an issue of the diet then possibly yes. Ishin has a good number of seats and they are in favor of the change. The Constitution and many DPP members are also not opposed to it.
So this is not a diet issue. This is that they would lose popularity amongst most Japanese people.

The ROC/PRC dispute is not the same as the belligerence of Russia and I don’t think it should be assumed to be the same. You don’t need an Asia Pacific NATO to recognise Taiwan as a country and declare to defend it. We don’t need an anti-China club as it just alienates and causes more tension in a region that does not have an appetite for war. Only once Taiwan decides to abandon the one state ideology and declare themselves an independent entity should anything take place. The ball is in Taiwan’s court.

Japan wants its islands back, specifically the Kuril Islands taken by Russia during WW2. Recently a massive amount of natural gas and oil was found there, of which would eliminate Japans reliance on nuclear power as well as oil imports which it relies on.
The islands have been under Russian administration since their 1945 invasion by the Soviet Union near the end of World War II. Japan claims the four southernmost islands, including two of the three largest (Iturup and Kunashir), as part of its territory, as well as Shikotan and the unpopulated Habomai islets, which has led to the ongoing Kuril Islands dispute. The disputed islands are known in Japan as the country's "Northern Territories".
Perhaps they see Russia in conflict and weakened, and would like to militarily reclaim what was formerly theirs...

If Japan wants a collective self defence system, nothing prevents it from signing mutual defence agreements with other Asian countries, but to expect an “Asian nato” is ludicrous as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan already have common defence treaties with the USA saying that if said nation is attacked the USA will get involved. Now, if Japan wants a NATO article 5 look alike where if one nation is attacked all the others would vet involved, fine let them try it, but I doubt it would work.
