"The Graduate" has an amazing soundtrack, thanks to Simon and Garfunkel. The closing image, of the couple realising that they don't know what to do next, while "Sound of Silence" plays, is truly haunting.
John Travolta on the lit dance floor in Saturday Night Fever with the Bee Gees playing is like the ultimate stylised 70's aesthetic. It's the first thing that I think of for that era's "look." I love it and the film. Seeing all these classic films and being reminded of their soundtracks just remind me why I love the art form of cinema so much. Thanks, MsMojo!
You might be forgiven for mistaking "Saturday Night Fever" for being a corny film where John Travolta dances to the Bee Gees, and nothing else happens. In actuality, it's a raw, gritty drama, where the protagonist realises just how shallow his disco lifestyle really is.
Yeah, I only knew it for the dance/disco aesthetic for years which I still do love the look of, it's pure 70's pop art essentially, then when I saw the film as a whole I was blown away. It had far more in common with Martin Scorsese's film Mean Streets than the type of dance movie I was expecting. I loved it even more than I thought I would.
Never thought it was a corny disco flick.. Sure the song and dance numbers are iconic, but combined, it makes up about 20 minutes of the film.. It's the story that jumped at me, and growing up in Brooklyn, not far from where it took place, I related to every moment..the language and violence were intense…
Yeah showed it to a guy I was dating once and he was skeptical because he thought it was just disco fluff and was totally taken aback by the grittiness.
You should also include: .The Wizard of Oz .Mary Poppins .Rocky .Rocky Horror Picture Show .Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory .The Muppet Movie .Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
And these shoudl have been included because they were all music written FOR the movie and not sampled for established hits. LOVED American Graffiti but had most of the "soundtrack on my K-Tel records.
These sound tracks only refer to rock music. But others that win awards are missing.. Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago, Great Race etc to name a few.
This is a hard one as a lot of these "soundtracks" were not created for the movie, but were established hits on their own. I'll give you Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and The Graduate as they MADE hits, as well as Shaft, though it is more just the theme more than the soundtrack. But Easy Rider and even American Graffiti used POPULAR songs to make their soundtrack memorable. These were not written FOR the movie.
Always hated west side story.. ( comes from being in high school and for 3 years, we did reports on that movie's "relevance" once in each of those years.. Never cared for it to begin with, and having to re-watch it repeatedly just made it worse in my eyes. ) **MY** favorite pics off this list are undoubtedly the Grease and Saturday Night Fever soundtracks!! ( I LOVE LOVE the idea that the brains behind the bit of selling the soundtrack album before the movie hit the theaters, the producers thought it wouldn't be worth beans.. .. they were crying and kicking themselves as the one with the rights was walking to the bank making MULTIPLE trips with SUITCASES Full of the ol Cash! MILLIONS of copies sold, so when the movie DID come out.. it EXPLODED like nothing that had yet been seen!)
Grease was originally supposed to be totally animated The 2021 remake of West Side Story, I think, was better than the 1961 original - though no one except Natalie Wood will ever be Maria
First, these are all great films with great soundtracks, but I disagree with their conclusions. The greatest classic film with the greatest soundtrack, and I will die on this @#@%$% hill, is THE MUPPET MOVIE. C'mon, The Rainbow Connection! And I defy you to dismiss Can You Picture That as the most perfect rock song EVER!!! If you weren't close to tears during I'm Going To Back There Someday, well then, my friend, I cannot tell you what is moving your blood around, because it ain't a heart. I hope That Something Better Comes Along is pure comedy gold and an absolute truth bomb. Sinatra missed a trick by not including that on his Duets album. You will never again hear a more moving love song from a pig to a frog than Never Before. From start to finish, this soundtrack outshines all the others by farthest and I chastise MOJO for not recognizing this immediately. Shame on you!!!
@@LucienSabre Not if it's specifically stated AT THE BEGINNING that only movies made before 1980 will be considered for that list, so what's really criminal here is you not paying attention to what was said
Can we start with the fact that 3 out of the 4 movies you mentioned aren't eligible for this list because of what Rebecca stated at the beginning that classic Hollywood means only pre-1980 movies?
And WM “fumbles” (to say it very nicely) again by putting OSTs nobody remembers (for a reason) like Shaft while leaving out soundtrack masterpieces like The Wizard of Oz, Top Gun, Rocky 4, Snowwhite and the seven dwarves, Dirty Dancing, Mary Poppins, Ladyhawke and Breakfast at Tiffany - and yes, I know some of these movies aren’t “classic/old Hollywood” and are from the 1980s, but they’re all _classics_ and that decade is close to become "old Hollywood" too by now.

The last American Virgin!
Yeah showed it to a guy I was dating once and he was skeptical because he thought it was just disco fluff and was totally taken aback by the grittiness.
You left out Fiddler On The Roof & The Sting.
Too many favorites!! My music (60, 70, 80s). But who doesn’t love Casablanca, West Side Story, Sound of Music?
Classics. 🎶🎵🎶🎵
I love that A Hard Day's Night is on here.
My grandparents love that film!
@serendavies7375 Have you watched it? As a Beatle fan, I have seen it a few times.
Harold & Maude, the Cat Stevens soundtrack is iconic
You should also include:
.The Wizard of Oz
.Mary Poppins
.Rocky
.Rocky Horror Picture Show
.Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
.The Muppet Movie
.Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Agree with Rocky and Rocky Horror
I keep seeing comments about Top Gun, Flashdance, Dirty Dancing however if you listen at he beginning Rebecca clearly states BEFORE the 80’s….
Love this list 😺 Grease and Saturday Night Fever were big growing up 🎉
A list of soundtracks shouldn’t include musicals. Those need their own list.
Grease
The Sound of Music
West Side Story
Saturday Night Fever
Great soundtrack listening over and over
I'm a huge fan of Saturday night fever and Shaft
Honorable mentions, Fame, Flashdance, Thank God Its Friday, Rocky II & III, Dirty Dancing, Funny Girl
And these shoudl have been included because they were all music written FOR the movie and not sampled for established hits. LOVED American Graffiti but had most of the "soundtrack on my K-Tel records.
Pre-80's only.
@@ChucksCherubs3 Not in the title.
@@Laceykat66 So you didn't watch the video? 🤨
Yes Dirty Dancing
The top 3 out of my 10 are Waiting To Exhale, The Bodyguard, and Burlesque
The Wizard of Oz💚 A Star is Born (1954)⭐ Cabaret🎙 Harold and Maude🌻 Finian's Rainbow🌈
American Graffiti has one of the best soundtrack ever. I grew up listening to it. Great movie too.
Yes, but it used samples form established hits of the era and did not write songs for the story like Grease, and Wes Side Stroy.
Xanadu has an amazing soundtrack as well as The Last American Virgin.
It's a good compilation.
good choices
I had the soundtrack to "American Graffiti" on cassette. Played it in my car until it self-destructed.
Shame on Ms Mojo for forgetting Mary Poppins.
of course , no mention of Stormy Weather Cab Calloway
Happy wednesday afternoon, Rebecca, take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well
This Gen X’er LOVES Saturday Night Fever being #1!!!
Grease should've been Number1
I love love love American Graffiti
THE BIG CHILL
Pre 80s only!
😂
Yes, Ma'am! @@markmaioli4
Anyone else think that we know this stuff a million times from this channel and watch mojo when they post whatever every day?
Ms. Mojo you have 2 do a part 2
Purple Rain. Epic.
That one is from the eighties, too new to make this list.
What about Oklahoma? Music Man?
How is Singin’ In The Rain not on this list?
Singles has the best soundtrack ever in a movie, way better than the movie itself.
The soundtrack to Superfly is light years ahead of Shaft.
Jesus Christ Superstar is still performed today.
Fiddler on the roof and Annie should be on this list
What about "The Wizard of Oz"? 🥺
6:41 I like the animated TV series Family Guy
These sound tracks only refer to rock music. But others that win awards are missing.. Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago, Great Race etc to name a few.
I think Oliver has a good soundtrack
My favourite classic musical film
Surprised Harold and Maude didn’t make the list

Grease is 5? 4 to 1 better be amazing.
How could you forget Hair?
Saturday night fever is greatest no.1 all time original sound track...
How are there no Disney soundtracks on this list? Also, no Wizard of Oz is unforgivable.
West side Story Hell Ya.
Forrest Gump and Dazed and Confused.
Always hated west side story.. ( comes from being in high school and for 3 years, we did reports on that movie's "relevance" once in each of those years.. Never cared for it to begin with, and having to re-watch it repeatedly just made it worse in my eyes. )

How were Top Gun and Purple Rain not on this list?
Because they're not pre-80s
The Big Chile
The Big Chill was awesome
No Wizard of Oz?
Its a great list, however, I cant believe that Urban Cowboy is not on this list.
Pre 1980s flicks only

Rocky 4 & Top Gun.
Agreed. 👍👍👍👍 Leaving those two out is criminal.

@NYChica23 🤣🤣 Girl, relax.
YES how could I forget Top Gun
Dirty Dancing??
Really messy list could quite easily 2 list musicals and non musicals
Ost Norfarhana Jamaluddin and Came lion
Where was Midnight Cowboy, Clueless, Empire Records? And the best soundtrack of all time Purple Rain?
Can we start with the fact that 3 out of the 4 movies you mentioned aren't eligible for this list because of what Rebecca stated at the beginning that classic Hollywood means only pre-1980 movies?
Purple Rain for sure
You can't leave out The Blues Brothers or Fast Times at Ridgemont High. You just can't.

How could you forget the Bodyguard
They didn't.
First!
Hellywood 🔥 run by bunch or fallen angels/ demons, but not for long! Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon🙏🏼❤️🕊Repent, believe in the Gospel, Be Born Again
We all know The Crow has the best soundtrack
It's a banger & one of my favs but doesn't qualify for the list. Didn't come out before the 1980s.
