  • Now that the lower level is complete it'stime to move onto the upper level and the first task I have is connecting the two up via an incline.
    This video shows how I install and test the Woodland Scenics incline and I talk about the things you have to consider when installing an incline, particuarly how much space you need and what percentage incline to get to allow your rolling stock to get up it without any problems.
    Thanks for watching. Please leave any comments you have, like and share the video and subscribe to keep up to date with the progress on the layout.

    Great job on the incline and they got up it at a fairly slow speed so job well done. The system you were thinking of is the DCC Concepts Power Base where you have base plates under the track and small magnets on the underside of the loco. Jenny Kirk did a video where she visited DCC Concepts and they did a demo on it. One thing I must say is I am very jealous of your selection of canned vegetables as our local supermarkets have not had any for days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep well and safe Cheers Kev

      That's the one, cheers Kev. I think I'll do fine without it though. With regards to the cans, luckily we did the months shopping just before things went crazy. I'm semi rural too so have escaped the true craziness and have a wee shop down the road that gets enough essentials to always stay reasonably stocked. Take care and see you on the other side. Just wish I'd got the wood in for the upper level before the lockdown was announced tonight.

      Thanks Al. Unfortuately, just like the new bridge, it's a road to nowhere just now as I can't get the wood for the upper level due to the lockdown. More important things to worry about right now than the supply of wood though! Hope you and your family are doing ok during this difficult time.

    Well that seemed to work out alright. These incline pieces are a great way to get a nice steady rise to form an embankment. I have used some of this on my layout.
    Cheers

      Thanks Geoff. I tried to do one myself out of wood on the old layout and it just didn't work out great. The foam risers are the way to go. Cheers, John.

    Interesting predicament with the bridge, always something that comes up when building a layout I find but sounds like a good solution. There are a fair few bridges at different levels in close proximity in and around Manchester which would make a great feature. Will be interesting to see how they both look, thanks for sharing, all the best, Paul

      Hi Paul. Thanks for watching and commenting. The bridges are close together but I wanted to create a scene in front of them so had to squeeze them together. Tbh I'm now looking at the viaduct and wondering if I should replace that with a wider span bridge to make the scenery easier to do. I have designed it so they can all be taken out of need be. Cheers, John.

    What a great job! The arc on your rise is not bad at all. I felt like your trains handled it well, especially at such slow speeds. I have Woodland Scenic 2% risers on my table and even my longer trains (albeit electric) handle it with no problem, unless I am at very slow speed.

      Thanks Anthony. I suppose I was running them a bit slow but didn't want them crashing off the track on the first test. 😆

    Good job!. I now need to watch all your recent videos to see how you added scenery to hide the risers, lol.

      Hi Scott. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please do, it was good fun doing that corner to hide the incline, probably my favourite project so far. Cheers, John.

    Sir where did you get that small engine shed? I’m looking for a very similar one for my layout.

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dennis. Thanks for watching and commenting. The small engine shed was built by my grandad back in the 60s. I've had a quick Google and Dapol seem to have produced a very similar one. There are a few available on eBay. Cheers, John.

    There is one disadvantage with this Woodland Scenics product. It is obviously aimed at users of American HO locos, many of which are fitted with traction tyres ! Unlike British outline products that generally like to avoid traction tyres. British steam outline in particular will therefore seriously struggle to haul more than a couple of coaches up even a 2% gradient. Indeed like real steam locos they don't like gradients of more than about 0.5%, and if the gradient has curves, the problem will be massively increased as curves effectively mean the gradient is much steeper. It's a Law of Physics !!!
    Happy Modelling 😝.

      @GreenhillJunction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James. I don't find that problem at all. I can get any of my steam locos up my 2% incline with a decent train of coaches or wagons behind it no problems at all. Curves do make it more difficult, hence the reason I kept these ones so gentle. Cheers ,John.

    hi can you tell me what the name is for that incline polly is called and were i can get it from thank you love the video

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting. It's the Woodlands Scenics 2% incline / decline set, code WST1410. It's widely available in online retailers. I'd suggest you Google it and pick the cheapest supplier. Cheers, John.

    Try putting some weights in the coaches and tender for better traction.

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phil. Thanks for watching and commenting. I think that would have the opposite effect as it would lead to more weight, drag and strain on the motor, just the same as adding more carriages. Al my locos make it up with 3 which is enough for me. Cheers, John.

    How well do these work for sound deadening when placed on plywood?

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark. Really quite well. Definitely one of the quieter bits of the layout. I've not ballasted most of it as it's hidden so that helps too. Cheers, John.

      Hi Charles. Thanks for your comment. How long was your incline down for before you had problems? I've not had any issues with mine yet thankfully. Cheers, John.

    Hi how many packs of inclines is that

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Dave. I think it was one pack of 3% risers, but I didn't use them all as I only needed the track to rise to 9cm above the baseboard. Cheers, John.
