Cost of software should be written off from profit only. It is a sort of fictitious asset. It can not remain in books forever. Moreover, if there is any need to buy new software, a company can not go on adding to that asset. At the time of winding up, it will be capital loss, if not written off. So may be a book entry, but will affect book value of the share.
