Finland has their own spy satellites that can see thru clouds an work in complete darkness. Russia can't do anything, without Finland knowing about it. That is one reason why the process of joining NATO was one of the fastest in history.
I wished Olaf Scholz said something like Stubb: This is our country it is our job to defend it and that‘s why we have NATO troops in East Germany from now own.
I remember growing up as a kid being interested in military history and was shocked to learn that Finland and Sweden were NOT part of NATO. It seemed natural but unfortunately it took this 2022 war to get them in. I agree with Finland's President - they are givers, not takers, with NATO.
Neutrality was forced (And good politics ) after WW2 , we have been slowly moving towards NATO for decades. F-18s in 90s and now F-35s, participating in NATO operations and training etc.
If Finland had tried to join NATO during the Cold War, the Red Army would have been pouring over the border in hours. Although Finland didn't downscale the military after the Cold War ended, like many West European nations did, there was still a general feeling in Finland that Russia is going into a much better direction and normal business with Russia is the most profitable way forward. So, NATO membership simply wasn't even a real political topic. It only began to appear in political discussion for real when Putin started to tighten the screw in Russia. When Crimea was occupied and Russia started the rebellion in eastern Ukraine, NATO membership was quite often in the talks, but still any real threat to Finland seemed like a remote possibility. The tables were totally turned in a single night when this total war began. Sweden wasn't in Finland's position, but it hasn't fought a war since the first half of the 19th century, so I guess you could say it possessed an attitude similar to Switzerland. It could have joined NATO any year after NATO was established, but neutrality was a motto and mantra in Stockholm, so it never happened. Sweden always had a super strong military during the Cold War, though, so it was prepared. When Finland suddenly informed Sweden that it's going to apply for NATO membership, Sweden was caught pants down. Stockholm realised Sweden doesn't want to remain as the single militarily non-aligned country in North Europe, especially since much of the Swedish armed forces had been downscaled after the Cold War ended. It was probably the first time in a thousand years that Finland was leading and Sweden following. It was quite funny.
Many Finns including me were against NATO membership, because there was no need. It would have been better to trade with Russia as well and we have people living on the other side of the border too. We also don't want to get involved into some new Iraq invasions. Unfortunately Russia has become a threat to sovereignty once again and we will stand together with our NATO allies
There is a lot going on in finland , that the president doesnt talk about. Our Infrastructure deals with the most massive DDoS attacks since ages.... Most people are not even aware of it maybe, because we manage to deal with that. The scale of the attacks allow to conclude its a state actor... We are hardening our critical infrastructure - and the Russians show us where we have to improve, you could say - theyre our unpaid pen-testers :)
Russia is disregarding all U.N charters and International Law, and the U.S and NATO has always followed these lawas, is Israel following international law?
NATO generally follow UN resolutions, but have in certain cases gone its own way where the democratic majority were in favor, only to be vetoed by Rus and/or China. It's probably more correct to say that NATO aligns with the consensus of their members first, the democratic world second, and then the UN third. And Israel had the right to retaliate by international standards, but their conduct have been largely rebuked to the point that even US started having second thoughts about its support. Though it is still a better conduct than the one we're seeing from Rus.

1:36 Look at that hidden smile when Alexander tells that because of Finland, Nato has now doubled their land border with Russia. Alexander is clearly proud of that fact, he knows that Nato has a blade on Russias throat now, and Putin knows it too! The tables have finally turned.
Finland needs to put a mass of troops on the border. The fact that Putin can withdraw all troops from NATO's border and put them into Ukraine makes this war much harder for Ukraine. NATO should be forcing Putin to waste troops defending the border.
However, Putin knows that Finland will not attack Russia (unless Russia first attacks Finland) as Finland follows international law. Russia has taken troops from that border with Ukraine. That says something about how real Putin actually thinks the threat from NATO is.
Boy, this interviewer really is hung up on living up to treaties made with Russia, when Russia has violated pretty much every treaty it's been party to. What a very strange viewpoint! As an Estonian I can say that I'm proud to have our Finnish brothers and sisters as part of NATO.

BUT, Finland have never believed, what Russia has said (well, sometimes it has been like walking in a thin line). Anyway, we have all the time strenghten our Defense Forces even after Cold War and you know well why. Like Poland has done. That's why we understand the rules of this game.
If your enemy is just near you, like we just have to without our will, we never trust a dictator and the country, whose people cannot understand anything about democracy, only dictators, to believe to Russia is nonsense. Putin was built this attack to Ukraine for years before the real attack by acting someone else.. The history repeat itself. Hope it ends now and after this the naive trust of European leaders will never come back. Russia never follow promises, never.
That's why it looks weird at least for Finns ( and we are really not the only ones), that the countries like France, Spain or Italy don't understand this even its Chrystal clear.
That also they will be a part of all of this war if we don't help Ukraine by WEAPONS, nothing else. 2000 km from Russian border means nothing. Hope that the other European countries understand this fact, too. And do something real, too.
Russia will never stop or leave Ukraine in peace with any kind of commitments. NEVER. Ukraine needs help from ALL countries of Europe. Soon. All Finns and our president Stubb knows it clearly. This is written our spinal cord.
What about the promise that Nato would not move an inch eastward?
@@perryblanco1446 And what agreement would that been? Can you name the document about that?
Russia has no rights anymore its leaders are wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity
@@Soundsinthevoid You made that agreement when Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons, But Russia doesn't respect agreements and lies about everything.
can it be that Finland is the one rational person in the room and not Germany?
On the subject of defense why would Germany be considered rational in the first place? And I'm not saying that as a criticism. Germany humbled themselves greatly after WW2 and have down prioritized their defense capability out of respect to their neighbors, which was the right thing for them to do at the time. But now we need them to change their mindset and it appears they are trying to adapt accordingly, but this change won't happen overnight.
For me it is clearly the case as Germany keep shooting itself in the foot.
Our president is so well spoken and has such an excellent and rich English vocabulary. He feels intelligent, thoughtful and logical. He gives a great impression internationally!

1994 Budapest Memorandum: United States, Russia, and UK signed the Budapest Memorandum included security assurances against the threat or use of force against Ukraine’s territory or political independence. The countries promised to respect the sovereignty and existing borders of Ukraine.
Yes, this treaty isn`t mentioned nearly enough in the media reporting.
Pray tell who worked to dismantle this memorandum?
Yes, Ukraine did give back nukes to Russia that was inherited from Soviet union. Russia did give security assurance to protect borders of Ukraine. I am now wondering if nukes would have been better security assurance and it is sad. 😢
And then usa interfered in Ukraine internal affairs
FORCE ASSIMILATION OF MINORITIES is part of the agreement?.
This man is not your typical EU politician. The best interview of all leaders by DW in recent memory.
I wish we had more politicians like this in Europe. It’s a sign of maturity of the Finnish democracy to have elected leaders like their president.
Finally, there is an adult politician somewhere
This guy has strong reason and the conviction to act if necessary, Scholz has neither.
What a great man! I would be so proud to have him as a president if I were a Finn. As a Pole, I’m ashamed of the occupant of the Presidential Palace.
I gather you'll have an opportunity to change him next spring?
@@patrickuotinen it’s his last term anyway. Yeah, we shall choose wisely, there are at least two great candidates. One of them possibly being Sikorski, through that’s less likely.
I love Finns so much, they are such common sense and brave people.
The Finns are indeed “cool, calm and collected,” and they stay that way no what gets thrown at them (just look up “Winter War”). There’s even a Finnish word for it. It’s called “Sisu” and wouldn’t hurt for the rest of the free world to have some of their own!
Historic interview! Glory to Finnish from Slovak brothers! The Finnish and the Swedish know their lands and their flags and they do not give in to bullies, and they speak for as much! What is wrong with this guy. He doesn't speak in incomprehensible word salad and bizarre rants. Someone needs to get to him and warn him if he keeps speaking plainly and being straight to the point, someone might understand him 😂. Seriously, can we import this fellow.
He is brainwashed by Americans, it has been clear long ago.
We have less bullshitting in politics and from politicians in Finland.
Surprisingly we had two good candidates on the second round of the presidential election. Alex is the one with a better speech, Pekka would have been quite solid on foreign policy as well; maybe even better - Alex is a bit too fast to answer before considering. But a narrow victory for Alex and I think he has started ok. He also has the advantage of being fairly fluent in French and German, besides his native Swedish and Finnish.
He has developed quite well in the past 10 years and has gotten wiser a lot. He himself said that he made 3-4 mistakes in the past 20 years regarding Russia, so he is not gonna make them again. I am pleasantly surprised about him, I didn't like him 10 years ago.
@@Maissiz Stubb was not a good PM. That was partly because he is way less interested in domestic issues than foreign policy, which is his real passion. In that sense he has the correct post now; zero power in domestic issues and can totally concentrate on world affairs.
Can this guy lead a united EU?😮
Finland and Nordic Baltic,
with Atlantic Islands, France, Germany,
Europe.
Or whatever that is.
I agree WITH EUROPE and DEMOCRAZY.
Best there is.
The 2 + 4 Treaty was with the USSR, which no longer exists. Do treaties persist with non-existent nations? Do treaties persist with nations that violate international law?
Why didn't Great Britain and the U.S. come to Ukraine's aid as outlined in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum? How much do these treaties really matter?
A valid point, especially that Russia stated in their founding documents, that they are NOT the legal successor state of the USSR (to avoid inheriting USSR committments, responisbilities and demands/reperations), so technically this treaty could be questioned after the dessolution of the USSR.

The Finnish Prez seems like a quite cool&calculated pol, traits we could use much more of here in the West -- and perhaps especially in my native nation -- the USA.
Here our top pols are the best, that is the best that $$$ can buy, whether Harris or TheDonald!
There will be no improvement as long as we allow corporations to lobby and pay the elected officials on the committees to have their agendas approved
Seems a very intelligent man, living along side Russia for such long time, they knew their stuff. He emphasises the word 'deterrence" indicates he knows his position very well.
Until now i didn't even think about how good Finland intelligence services probably are being that close to Russia
Lets just say we know our neighbour pretty well.
Finland has their own spy satellites that can see thru clouds an work in complete darkness. Russia can't do anything, without Finland knowing about it. That is one reason why the process of joining NATO was one of the fastest in history.
Definitely nothing without the EU or USA

A true leader of a great nation. Love from LT.
There is a lot going on in finland , that the president doesnt talk about. Our Infrastructure deals with the most massive DDoS attacks since ages.... Most people are not even aware of it
maybe, because we manage to deal with that. The scale of the attacks allow to conclude its a state actor...
So - we are not beeing shot at with bullets, but the russkies sure express their ire in other ways. We are hardening our critical infrastructure - and the Russians show us where we have to improve, you could say - theyre our unpaid pen-testers :)
It is just the friendly russian politics... They try to be polite /s

Russia is disregarding all U.N charters and International Law, and the U.S and NATO has always followed these lawas, is Israel following international law?
US/NATO followed UN Charter ok......😂😂
@@kpd620 hahaha, wow. 👍
UN follow USA
NATO generally follow UN resolutions, but have in certain cases gone its own way where the democratic majority were in favor, only to be vetoed by Rus and/or China. It's probably more correct to say that NATO aligns with the consensus of their members first, the democratic world second, and then the UN third. And Israel had the right to retaliate by international standards, but their conduct have been largely rebuked to the point that even US started having second thoughts about its support. Though it is still a better conduct than the one we're seeing from Rus.
@@ShadowTani I am not saying Russia or any other country is a saint or will be one of given oppertunity, the thing is humans promote people with extravagant GREED and call it a successful Man or a Nation, that's what's shameful and needs to be rectified atleast on the global stage. Alexander is clearly proud of that fact, he knows that Nato has a blade on Russias throat now, and Putin knows it too!
The tables have finally turned.
Love my Finnish brothers and sisters.
There shouldn’t be such a nonsensical concept of “neutrality” when the bully is your neighbor.
Finland was not neutral, but militarily non-aligned. We lose our neutrality by joining EU if not in the 1960's already by efta and such agreements...
Thank God or whoever, we don't need to be in that neutrality gab any more
Finland needs to put a mass of troops on the border. The fact that Putin can withdraw all troops from NATO's border and put them into Ukraine makes this war much harder for Ukraine. NATO should be forcing Putin to waste troops defending the border.
Putin knows Nato wont attack
However, Putin knows that Finland will not attack Russia (unless Russia first attacks Finland) as Finland follows international law. Russia has taken troops from that border with Ukraine. That says something about how real Putin actually thinks the threat from NATO is.
He is soooo good!
Better late than never.
Yes. However possibly the best strategic partner for Ukraine in this conflict at this stage.
