Under America leadership all of Western Europe will decline rapidly. The Americans are not who they make themself out to be. European people have the right to self determination. The U.S. intends to use western Europe to advance and maintain it's hegemonic rules based order. American Rules designed for Europeans. Why would the U.S. disadvantage their own economic interests. Europe will prosper only if it can decide for itself what suits best to develop supply chain agreements for Russian Commodities. Sorry... The Russian Federation pivot to China was successful. The U.S. is still myred in West Asia.

Alexander Stubb was elected as the President of Finland on the second round of voting in February 2024.
There were 9 candidates on the first round. All of them accomplished in various ways, but 8 with also very broad political and international experience.
I personally voted for Alex Stubb, but would have been quite content with 7 other choices (so, leaving one).
To my mind it is still amazing that we, a country of 5 million people, could have such a choice of accomplished candidates.

If Russia would have obeyed or have now obey any rules or promises, there would be country name Finland like its still now. But they didnt, they are just played a game by Stalin and still play a game by Putin. But, they didn't actually won, us we could keep our own land. Putin, in his sick mind still wants again Finland like Baltic countries and Poland first, because of going back hundreds years of history. HE thinks we belong to Russia.
BUT, Finland have never believed, what Russia has said (well, sometimes it has been like walking in a thin line). Anyway, we have all the time strenghten our Defense Forces even after Cold War and you know well why. Like Poland has done. That's why we understand the rules of this game.
If your enemy is just near you, like we just have to without our will, we never trust a dictator and the country, whose people cannot understand anything about democracy, only dictators, to believe to Russia is nonsense. Putin was built this attack to Ukraine for years before the real attack by acting someone else.. The history repeat itself. Hope it ends now and after this the naive trust of European leaders will never come back. Russia never follow promises, never.
That's why it looks weird at least for Finns ( and we are really not the only ones), that the countries like France, Spain or Italy don't understand this even its Chrystal clear.
That also they will be a part of all of this war if we don't help Ukraine by WEAPONS, nothing else. 2000 km from Russian border means nothing. Hope that the other European countries understand this fact, too. And do something real, too.
Russia will never stop or leave Ukraine in peace with any kind of commitments. NEVER. Ukraine needs help from ALL countries of Europe. Soon. All Finns and our president Stubb knows it clearly. This is written our spinal cord.

On the subject of defense why would Germany be considered rational in the first place? And I'm not saying that as a criticism. But now we need them to change their mindset and it appears they are trying to adapt accordingly, but this change won't happen overnight.

If Finland had tried to join NATO during the Cold War, the Red Army would have been pouring over the border in hours. Although Finland didn't downscale the military after the Cold War ended, like many West European nations did, there was still a general feeling in Finland that Russia is going into a much better direction and normal business with Russia is the most profitable way forward. So, NATO membership simply wasn't even a real political topic. It only began to appear in political discussion for real when Putin started to tighten the screw in Russia. When Crimea was occupied and Russia started the rebellion in eastern Ukraine, NATO membership was quite often in the talks, but still any real threat to Finland seemed like a remote possibility. The tables were totally turned in a single night when this total war began.
Sweden wasn't in Finland's position, but it hasn't fought a war since the first half of the 19th century, so I guess you could say it possessed an attitude similar to Switzerland. It could have joined NATO any year after NATO was established, but neutrality was a motto and mantra in Stockholm, so it never happened. Sweden always had a super strong military during the Cold War, though, so it was prepared. When Finland suddenly informed Sweden that it's going to apply for NATO membership, Sweden was caught pants down. Stockholm realised Sweden doesn't want to remain as the single militarily non-aligned country in North Europe, especially since much of the Swedish armed forces had been downscaled after the Cold War ended. It was probably the first time in a thousand years that Finland was leading and Sweden following. It was quite funny.

1:36 Look at that hidden smile when Alexander tells that because of Finland, Nato has now doubled their land border with Russia.
Alexander is clearly proud of that fact, he knows that Nato has a blade on Russias throat now, and Putin knows it too!
    The tables have finally turned.

There shouldn’t be such a nonsensical concept of “neutrality” when the bully is your neighbor.

Finland was not neutral, but militarily non-aligned. We lose our neutrality by joining EU if not in the 1960's already by efta and such agreements...

Finland needs to put a mass of troops on the border. The fact that Putin can withdraw all troops from NATO's border and put them into Ukraine makes this war much harder for Ukraine. NATO should be forcing Putin to waste troops defending the border.

    • @tangfors

However, Putin knows that Finland will not attack Russia (unless Russia first attacks Finland) as Finland follows international law. Russia has taken troops from that border with Ukraine. That says something about how real Putin actually thinks the threat from NATO is.

Boy, this interviewer really is hung up on living up to treaties made with Russia, when Russia has violated pretty much every treaty it's been party to. What a very strange viewpoint!
As an Estonian I can say that I'm proud to have our Finnish brothers and sisters as part of NATO.
