I dont think Leiji Matsumoto got started in Jump as he was active years before but Go Nagai pretty much did! Still the amount of important authors who were in Jump is staggering! Really fun to find out!
Reading otoko ippiki Gaki Daishou you can really see how the main character and 5 story itself became the blueprint for most shounen battle manga. Even if it can feel a little predictable it's only because what this series did is what others have taken for themselves. Really influenced the medium.
I’ve always wanted to read Kujira Daigo. Being the inaugural manga to kickstart Shonen Jump, I’m surprised no one has gone through the trouble of scanlating it after all these years. My hope is that maybe one day they’ll add it to the vault in the SJ App.
Holy mother of research, this video is amazing! I had never heard of so many of these and here you are giving them the spotlight they deserve. Brilliant work, Trentin!
Tysm!! I'm so glad me from a year ago kept a written document of all my thoughts it made the turnaround on this so much quicker! And remember to check out Otoko Ippiki! It's the only one of these you can really sink your teeth into as of now.
Stumbled across these videos at random and gotta say this is some great coverage! I've always been interested in Jump's history but wasn't terribly well versed in anything before 1978 or so (not to mention the massive amount of smaller titles which never got much attention state side) so this is an absolute treat. I've been a pretty frequent reader since about 2006 or so but haven't taken the time to look much beyond the more mainstream titles so to get a history/run down of stuff to that catches my interest is super appreciated. Last year I read Bakuman for the first time (adore the Shonen Jump app having such a great backlog available) and loved it so much and while I caught a fair bit of the references it's even cooler to be clued into the ones that went over my head. Definitely going to check out your other videos once I'm caught up with these. I just turned 40 this year and while I've been a life long fan of multiple things manga is probably the only art form that consistently makes me feel like a kid again in all the best ways.
Ohh wow 2006 is way back haha, I think I only really got into Jump Specifically in maybe 2017ish! I really love looking into all the smaller axed manga so its nice other people have an interest too and enjoy the videos! Id also love to re-read bakuman since i found a couple references early on which I mentioned in this video iirc, which was great! Plus overall I have a much better view of Jump now so it'd be a fun experience for sure! Thats really sweet too, I hope when im 40 I can say the same, because reading manga and researching Jump definitely makes me feel like a kid a lot haha!
10:38 The black beard part of title is just Japan havjng one word for facial hair. It's why White Beard from One Piece has his name inspire of the man clealry having a mustache.
Thank you for your videos This is awesome great work stay safe You are one of the best channels on TH-cam Talking about the history of shonen jump I hope you continue on this and I learn something new every video from you .
Amazing video! Cant imagine how hard it was to research these old obscure series. Also, you've convinced me to check out otoko ippiki. If anything, the video is a little quiet, but I cant wait to check out the rest of your stuff.
Thank you so much! I actually did a lot of research a year or so ago, although I still feel like I could be a lot more thorough haha! Glad i've convinced you to take a look at Otoko Ippiki, it's a real treat and i'm glad theres something to read from Jumps beginning. Overtime my audio has increased in volume I think so I hope you enjoy future videos!
This was a great educational video to watch.😊 I REALLY loved hearing about Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou; I hadn’t heard much about it. It’s getting translated too! I’m going to have to go and read that soon. :) If I had one constructive comment this time around, I would tell you to focus on pacing. The beginning with history and then the ending with everything “OtIGD” work great, but the middle drags a bit. Some clean-up of the script and shrinking the space for less historically-important series sounds like it could be a good way to fix that. I think the audio is good now too. If anything, maybe a “very” slight increase; it doesn’t need much. Otherwise, I really loved this! I’m always interested in learning more about Jump’s history. Feel free to talk about the new batch when it finishes coming out. Blessings.❤️
Thank you! I 100% agree with the criticism, I already cut some out of the script and didnt record some I felt werent interesting but there were still so many series I mentioned XD. When I get around to doing more I probably will just quickly list series that arent that interesting to speculate on from that year as theres many in the 70s with little info to go off of. I'm excited to talk about the new batch / modern Jump in the future too! Thanks for your comment!
I just saw this on my home page and im glad that i see this. Im subscribeing to you because i also love weekly shonen jump and im glad that someone is talking abou the history of this magazine 💯💯
Cool video! I love learning the early history of Shonen Jump, as I've never heard anyone talk about it. I can't wait to hear you talk about Nusutto in the next installment. I've read the first two chapters and it's suprisingly an alright series, for a series that stole Lupin III's design. (By the way, could you raise the volume on your next video? I had to turn my speakers way up to hear.)
Thank you!! Oh Nusutto is a fun one, I remember talking to the person who translated them, they realllly loved Lupin! Darn i think i turned the audio up from the last one but its still too quiet! Must be because all my audio is super low since i have pretty sensitive ears. Ill make a note to turn it up next time though, thank you!
@@TrentinArt No worries, you’re correct. The sound is sooooo much better than last time. You don’t need to pull it up any higher; it would be too loud.
Unfortunately, not long after this video, Hokuto no Gun stopped their translation of Otoko Ippiki at just 56 chapters. It doesn't appear on their active projects list.
I wish you'd go more into details when you say that something or someone was controversial. A few things got me curious but I couldn't find anything because of how old those manga are even with a decent knowledge of Japanese.
I mean thats exactly why i didnt go into them haha the info is too hard or obtuse to find. If it's on Shintarou Miyawaki it's because they made a very infamous manga called "The Rapeman" and id rather not mention it tbh. If it's for George Akiyama .. well he's just super wild in general, theres lots of rumours and he's known for making some disturbing manga.
@@TrentinArt lol makes sense. That's a very yikes title for a manga especially if it was aimed for teenagers. I'm the type who likes to investigate those types of anomalies just out of morbid curiosity so I'd probably give it a read if I had the opportunity. Maybe that was the goal of the author? Lol I really want to try reading some of George akiyama's works to see what the fuss is about but gonna have to wait when I can afford to have manga imported from Japan since they tend to be expensive. This is why I miss living in Japan and being able to just go to a store and find all those obscure manga. Anyway, great content. Keep it up.
@@amuro9624 Thank you! Yeah id love to read some of the akiyama works since they seem pretty interesting and he was quite prolific throughout Jumps 70s. I have lots more videos in this series and more to come!
Молодец, хорошее видео - информативное и интересное. Грамотное редактирование с шутками прибаутками и фотографиями мангак, звук немного тихий, но это исправимо. Ждем следующее видео 👏👏👏
I happened to read the scanlated Harenchi Gakuen chapters as a jump background thing and was honestly kind of shaken at the portrayal of like six year olds effortlessly and violently reproducing adult gender dynamics. I mean it's like 60 years old at this point but damn it's no wonder before otaku was a commonly used phrase ppl called em maniacs 💀
@@TrentinArt yeah also I (and I think many other western animanga fans) often forget dirty jokes just do not exist in the same capacity in japanese. the taboos are totally different. also the characters do age up pretty fast I think? and I can't lie and say it's unfunny!! just not that funny to me lol
@@David-uy5nr there is the whole thing of "dirty jokes dont exist in japanese" or whatever so that definitely makes things more complicated in retrospect. im glad to hear someone is translating, i probably pick it up again lol

It's crazy that so many legends like leiji Matsumoto and go nagai started in jump

Ikr!! Especially since it isn't very long. My dream would be for all the old Jump manga to be on the app, thatd be so sick!
Time to binge watch this channel
