As long as you are buying for the long haul its always the right time to buy. Just keep picking up books regardless of the "high or low" and in time you will win. Time is the key to success with all collectibles as they ALL go up eventually. "Buy what you like" is the golden rule and the best advise anyone can give or take in my opinion. Great video as always 🔥
Just got back into the hobby before my brothers passing and it helps me feel connected to him. Reading the comment section makes it nice to hear that not all the people in the community are completely motivated by profit margins
Prices should come back down another 10-20% and then resume their slow annual increases. The spike we saw was likely a perfect storm. Not expecting that again except for the odd spec books.
The irony of watching this video while also watching a high profile auction (lol). Was hoping to pick up a AF 15 at a reduced price, but tonight was not my night. Maybe next time :)
Really enjoyed this video, Bry. As a 40+ year collector, I've seen my share of ups and downs and this last bull market was as out of control as I've ever seen. I think we're back to a more reasonable market now, thankfully. Most of my collecting regrets are from NOT buying certain books in the past. I rarely regret buying anything because when I buy I try to think in terms of "what am I willing to pay right now?" and "is this a bargain?" rather than relying on guide prices which ultimately are what other people are willing to pay.
I agree think it’s a fine time to buy. It’s just ever more important to be mindful of what you’re looking for and being careful what you’re willing to spend. I mean, if someone plans to be in this hobby for the rest of their life, this is definitely a fine to buy if you’re careful and stay within your means.
Lol, I'm trying to do some of what you are talking about. I sold my Stan Lee (& Liefeld and Fabian) signed New Mutants 98 9.8 for $4400, I bought it for $2k a few years before thinking it would come back down. Lee signatures seem to be the only thing not crashing, so now it's been years with that hole in my heart.
We are experiencing a price correction and it’s definitely going to continue to go down until it meets that linear pattern from your first graph. Maybe 25% lower until it’s back to where the numbers should be.
You touched on one aspect that is the hardest for me personally. Parting with your favorite comics. My head tells me one thing while my heart says no, no, no. When I sold my Avengers 4 raw copy several years ago, even though it was probably a .5 or 1 at the most, I was really torn. I bought it back in the mid 60’s at a discount store in Kingston Ontario for a nickel. It’s the memories like that that make it tough!
Interesting insights bro! I have doubles of a lot of comics in my collection that I wouldn't mind parting ways with. I also have some popular singles that I'm not too attached to that I would sell as well. However, there are those that are so near and dear to me (regardless of $$ value) that I don't see myself parting with. These days, I'm mostly focused on getting those on my wish list that have come down in price.
Another very informative aspect of collecting, I am not thinking about the highs and lows or focusing on the down market, but only on what I can control, like upgrading (very good deals only of FMV) and perfecting my cleaning / pressing. Though I have also been submitting a lot to CGC economy tier (which is getting quiet pricey) I am in it for the long haul, so waiting a long time to see my books again is part of my process. On that note I have had to sell some books to help fund the hobby... of coarse I really don't want to sell cause the market might just turn around, but I look at it with the "it's OK " attitude that as long as I am making a profit, I am good LOL
Currently working on selling a 10,000+ book collection and knowing where to start after cataloguing (that took 3 years) has been the biggest challenge. Just wanted to throw in here that after hundreds of hours of videos and reading, your channel may be the most helpful resource I’ve found. Like you, I’m keeping the ones that mean the most to me; but unlike you, most of the ones that I’m keeping are the ones in the collection worth the most. So comes the challenge of finding a buyer for about 160 books of value while also taking the other 10,000 off my hands. I would love a video on that particular topic if it’s not on your channel already!
The sooner the quick spec flippers leave the comic market, the better the chance of recovery. With serious collector-investors and dealers like you that share a love for the hobby, recovery could be just around the corner!! Your comment on the.enjoyment side of collecting is perfect!!
In my experience, when people experience financial hardship for a long enough period of time--the duration of which is dependent upon each individual and their circumstances--they will reach a point whether they can afford to or not when they literally say f*** it and start spending money on some things that make them happy. Right now we're dealing with the fiscal implications of a stalling economy but I think we're moving towards the psychological implications of a stalling economy where folks need something to feel like the tedium of all of their hard work and struggles isn't just going to pay bills and just get by. People need things that make them feel like enduring the buffets of hard times has some value beyond the pragmatic. The grand keys will always be okay because the people with the ability to buy those books don't take the hits as hard as lower-income folks. I think the market for minor keys and lower value major keys will see some improvement but the market for great-quality books, especially Silver and Bronze Age, will do well with collectors. I think the spec market will soften, especially with new books, as that trend does seem to be waning quite hard. I wouldn't be surprised to see that the general market for great raw books in the $30-$60 range do exceedingly well in comparison to the $100-$300 range and any good graded book selling for about the cost of grading will also do well. It's a great opportunity for clever collectors and very long-term investors.
Bry, seems like a great time to buy as prices drops, but not a good time to sell. With inflation and interest rates, buying has definitely cooled off. I'm still keeping an eye out for keys for my collection.
Very good and comprehensive video, Bry. You have a great mind for business and have a good grasp of this hobby. Keep it up man! Despite the current market for this hobby, you’re killing it!
When you are on a limited budget the ptices of comics determines my spending habits. During the boom of 2021 I was buying many cheaper books almost no grails but when 2022 came around I was buying more grails.
Honestly dude the characters and story in Ninja Funk is so cool, and the Do You Pooh is awesome too....lots of rare af books with these series too, 2023 is the year of the dope af Indy books 💯
Thanks you for your positive take on the state of the comic market. I have seen so many individuals on social media basically gaslighting individuals over how they did with the books that they purchased over the last few years. They keep on focusing on the negative in how all the prices came down but never mentioning the cyclical nature of not only the comic book market but all markets. I have no doubt that over the long term comics will continue to go up in price again, especially Golden and Silver age books. In my opinion outside of a financial emergency there is no reason to panic sell.
Yep, it is the economy. The COVID investors are getting out. Every random tech stock, scamcoin, NFT and collectible went bonkers in 2020-2021 and reality is setting in. I love comics and will continue collecting.
Your overall theory is correct for those who are cash heavy. The question is how many people in this market are truly cash heavy? Spending $10,600 on a comic book even though it was marvel family number one is a huge amount of money to lay out on the book. I’m not sure if most of us who collect comics and we’re in this market a year ago would be having this conversation if people who were in it a year ago we’re still here. We had way too many people eject from Abie which is why it’s being flooded the way it is.
I agree with you on the enjoyment aspect of buying. It's really the best way to buy, in my opinion, because art is only ever worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. Buying for profit is always a gamble but buying for enjoyment satisfies the soul every time.
Like you said being cash heavy right now is golden. I find myself aggressively hunting at a heightened level and gobbling up any good deal I could find and there are a lot of them. It's very easy to click that bid button. You have to be able to walk away.
I think the market is definitely moving towards a buyers market. Great breakdown Bry. It would be very very difficult for me to get rid of a ToS39. That's my ultimate grail of grail books. But, anything and everything is for sale at the right price.
Books will always bounce back, it's always the same when there is a looming recession. Once the economy bounces back, collectables always follow. Great video my man
I collect for the love of comics. I plan to be buried in a CGC custom casket like a Pharaoh with my comics to have something to read in the afterlife. If you have to sell - a better time would be when the X-Men movies drop and the evaluations go sky high.
Cool video. I am buying everything I have been looking for without the crazy 2021 prices. I see folks happy to negotiate, even on Ebay wouldn't in 2021 and 2022, especial eBay. Cash and one on one at the upcoming conventions will be interesting. Heroes Mini-Con starts Feb 4th. I want to see what happens.
Great Video! I have been collecting comics for almost 50 years. I have been selling on eBay since 98, before PayPal just checks n money orders. I have been playing the “curve” for many years. I treat this as I would a business, I’ve sold many grails only to buy them back cheaper and usually in better grade. I see this as a deep curve that began in aug of 22; I feel it’s gonna run well into 24 maybe as late as early 25. I know it’s a pessimistic view but with that projection I won’t be disappointed if I’m wrong. I have sold keys since aug of 22 and this year but no grails. I am cash heavy and have been sniping grails for cheap. I have over 33k comics close to 700 slabbed. My wife was been completely on board since 2017 when I sold an xmen 107 CGC9.8 for 6k $ and paid off her car and she gave me the basement lol My suggestion is to weather the storm is to help your family understand it’s not just funny books. Thanks again Bry for your sound insight. DONTSLEEP cause the streets is watching
To most people (not pro comic investors) comics are luxuries, not necessities. In a bad economy, people have to maintain their necessities first. I honestly do not see the economy improving for at least another year or two ( I won't say why). My best guess, late 2024 will be the best time to start investing in large keys again.
I agree with a previous comment, it's always a good time to buy if it's for the long haul. Some times are better, some books are better. But, unless you get stuck in the FOMO of some modern flavor of the day variant trap, they will trend upwards over the long haul. And if it's a book you love, or it means something to you for your PC, buy it. A different ballgame if you're a dealer and need to look at those turnaround margins and such.
I like the idea of trading the curve… I sold a few comics during the huge spike in the market because it was too attractive not to with the hopes of potentially buying some of them back when prices went back down. I wish I had done that with more, but it’s hard letting go with uncertainty of what’s going to happen in the future. It’s a good way to fund my collecting though to allow me to obtain books that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to purchase. Hopefully there will be more opportunities to do that in the future, but at the moment I am sitting tight from buying or selling major keys unless the right deal presents itself.
I think instead of expecting the decline to stop unless something majorly bad happens, I think it will continue to decline unless something majorly good happens... I could definitely see it dropping down to 2015ish prices over the next year or so unless something happens that fuels the industry... which hasn't really happened in a while. In fact, I think there is nothing but bad things happening in comic book related news right now... and the economy is unlikely to cushion the fall anytime soon. Very pessimistic view of the future of comic book prices, sorry, I could of course be wrong (hopefully) but I've seen bubbles pop before and it kind of feels like it is happening now. So many people also just hanging on to the hope that 'even if it does decline, it won't be that bad! Collectibles always go up!' This is just not true, if it falls out of favor hard enough, like sports cards have for example... it'll crash harder than anyone could anticipate. Very few will really hold their value. Comic books have been the 'hot collectible' for a while now, mostly thanks to the MCU. It is just not super likely they can maintain the upward trend, not just in price but popularity, for too much longer.
Haven't the foggiest idea what the market will do over the next few years. But I know that I'm gonna keep enjoying this hobby within my means and knock out a grail or two per year as I'm able
Another interesting video. I was worried that you sold your pence copy of TTA27 but think I can see it hiding on the back of your wall. You have mastered the art of detachment from your most precious collectibles which is probably a very good thing. Your personal collection will always be fresh as a consequence and be less encumbered by the sheer mass and volume of very large collections. Having a collection that is mostly slabbed is also easier in some ways in that slabbed books lend themselves naturally to display whereas as unslabbed books find themselves inevitably stuffed into short and long boxes. The joy of reading comic books is something that seems to get lost in our age of spec. If one retains that love of a book that has expanded one’s perception and made one think a bit, well now, that is really what this hobby is all about!
very good points. You are right nobody knows the future. I still remember my physics teacher saying if these guys who know the future, why aren't they buying lottery tickets.
It very much like real estate to me. The highs and lows still is dependent on what the buyer thinks it's worth. Every buyer buys for different reasons (nostalgia, art, keys, grails). Wolverine 1 may be worth $400 to me, but $600 to another. I paid more for an ASM 300 at my LCS because it brought back memories of when I first had owned it.
100%. I am selling my collection when I retire.
Just got back into the hobby before my brothers passing and it helps me feel connected to him. Reading the comment section makes it nice to hear that not all the people in the community are completely motivated by profit margins

I got one for a price I never thought I'd be able to get one a month or so ago.. it was number one on my list for years..
I think that you have made a lot of valid points in this video, the most important being comic books prices being related to the state of the economy.
So true
You sir are the calming voice of reason in the 18:50 torrential storm that is the hobby of collecting comics. Great advice as always.
Great Breakdown sir! Do you mind telling me what camera you’re using ? The quality looks great. Thanks for your time.
I think it’s called the Sony a7r v or something like that
Thanks!
2023 - things will start to turn up!
Lol, I'm trying to do some of what you are talking about. The hole is real!
We are experiencing a price correction and it’s definitely going to continue to go down until it meets that linear pattern from your first graph. Maybe 25% lower until it’s back to where the numbers should be.
I think your logic to collecting is perfect and its basically how I collect, buy and sell! Great job
It didn’t really feel like you talked about why you sold right now.
You touched on one aspect that is the hardest for me personally. Parting with your favorite comics. My head tells me one thing while my heart says no, no, no. Love the stock market sell high buy low approach!!
Thanks for sharing Bry. Great info as always
i m liking this.good info. really making me think about my recent buys and non buys, Thanks, Bry
Thanks for all the info and tips. Just getting back into buying and nice to see prices drop
Long term comics will do well especially key books. Might be more stable than stocks.

Nice breakdown on funding the hobby. “Forever” doesn’t negate making a good financial decision…. Keep it up.

Great show! Great perspective on the current state of collecting.
Definitely a good time to buy! Trying to grab some of my most wanted books while prices are down.
Happy New Year, great video thanks for always giving us some great information!!
Happy new year!
When you are on a limited budget the ptices of comics determines my spending habits. During the boom of 2021 I was buying many cheaper books almost no grails but when 2022 came around I was buying more grails.
I have been working on my SIKTC collection. I have gotten a few books that I thought I would never see. Good time to look for deals, that's for sure.

I always enjoy hearing your opinions on the comic book market.
I love your philosophy of How much is your enjoyment worth.? I totally agree, it’s nice to know there are like minded people in the hobby.
Thanks as always for your openness and transparency when it comes to your thinking about collecting/selling strategy.
Digging the new camera gear. Oh and the information is great as always!
I always use this simple formula: T (time to buy) = B (book you want) x P (price you want to pay)
Cool video! Haven’t seen other comic channels describing an approach like yours. Love the novelty and creativity!
Yep, it is the economy. The COVID investors are getting out. Every random tech stock, scamcoin, NFT and collectible went bonkers in 2020-2021 and reality is setting in. I love comics and will continue collecting.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and advice!
Your videos are always very informative, appreciate the great work
I agree with you on the enjoyment aspect of buying. It's really the best way to buy, in my opinion, because art is only ever worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. Buying for profit is always a gamble but buying for enjoyment satisfies the soul every time.
Gotta respect your passion Bry, another solid video btw.
Top insights and good to hear the enjoyment factor mentioned!
Just found the channel and am excited to see more content!
Welcome aboard!
Chill episode, good luck with all your future moves..
Great video Bry! Thank you for all the info. Always love your videos for all the knowledge and information.
Great advice Bry! Buy what you enjoy, then it doesn't matter when the market fluctuates
I’m still buying right now since it is a buyers market!
Like you said being cash heavy right now is golden. I find myself aggressively hunting at a heightened level and gobbling up any good deal I could find and there are a lot of them. It's very easy to click that bid button. You have to be able to walk away.
Good insights.. will keep in mind going into 2023
Really enjoyed!! Thanks for information!!
1st video of yours, really enjoyed it.
Welcome aboard!
This is a fascinating topic to sell your whole collection
Great perspective on a well loved hobby!
I think the market is definitely moving towards a buyers market. Great breakdown Bry. It would be very very difficult for me to get rid of a ToS39. That's my ultimate grail of grail books. But, anything and everything is for sale at the right price.
Totally agree
It’s been a buyers market for the last 6 months.
Great content as usual Bri!
Great video, As a viewer I think it's a great idea to rotate the wall books to keep it fresh.
I have a few ideas to switch things up 👍
Books will always bounce back, it's always the same when there is a looming recession. Once the economy bounces back, collectables always follow. Great video my man
Great insight Bry. I agree it’s not a bad time to pick up some grails.
I collect for the love of comics. I plan to be buried in a CGC custom casket like a Pharaoh with my comics to have something to read in the afterlife. If you have to sell - a better time would be when the X-Men movies drop and the evaluations go sky high.
😂😂😂I love this

I appreciate the insight. I have a collection of almost 10k books and Im getting a little older. May one day look in to selling my collection.
Great video as always!

Now that it’s a buyers market where those stimulus checks at? Lol it’s great seeing grails start to be in a better price range for average collectors!
Lol no kidding, we could all use $1200 right now
I just hope we recoop soon, I know sideways it's a good thing and I'm sure we can never go back to the 2019-2020 craze.

definitely great time to buy, just be patient and you'll find great deals

Good vid Bry 👌
Such sick slabs, keep up the great work.
I'm getting books I want for $1-20$ again....time to buy is definitely 2023
Thank you for the video Bry.
Hey great video, very informative. I appreciate the work you do and for sharing your knowledge. Keep it up man, I enjoy the content!!
You heard it here TH-cam! Bry says “Sell your comics and buy a bunker.”😂 Thanks for the perspective Bry. Keep grinding bro!✌🏼
😂😂😂
Always good to rotate comics on the wall!
JPG from Ninja Funk is such a kick ass looking character!!!! Lazer wolf and BB too!
Been holding mine for years, may still hold them for a while.

Comic books have been the 'hot collectible' for a while now, mostly thanks to the MCU. It is just not super likely they can maintain the upward trend, not just in price but popularity, for too much longer.
It is a incredibly time to buy!
Great video & advice. Buy what you like/love and you can't go wrong.
Haven't the foggiest idea what the market will do over the next few years. But I know that I'm gonna keep enjoying this hobby within my means and knock out a grail or two per year as I'm able
Great video buddy!
I love this channel. Your very thorough.
Another interesting video. Thanks for your transparency!
very good points.
