  • Comparing a narrow light beam (i-Torch Kraken NR-1000) to a wide angle light beam (Big Blue AL1000XWP). Both are fantastic lights, though the narrow beam Kraken is great for penetrating murky water, such as the north Atlantic; and the wide beam of the Big Blue is perfect for filming, but won't penetrate very far at all in less than clear water.
The Kraken, as with any light with a hot spot, will completely wash out any subject you wish to film under water. It is otherwise a great dive light; I use it as my primary night dive light.
The Big Blue is, again, very well suited for under water filming at night, and is a good light for clear or mildly murky water; but, when diving in murky water of any kind, this light will not aid in navigation at all. This light does come with a red and a yellow filter to help with adding color back in to deep water video.

Two year update: I have had absolutely zero issues with either light so far, and I still use the Kraken regularly. I dive at least once a week pretty much year round, though that's not all night diving. Still highly recommended.
