I wonder why I never saw or even heard of any Lil Abner cartoons until today. They were obviously made in the same era as the earliest Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Tom & Jerry, etc. Copyright issues?
It was popular as a comic but it just didn't have the same sorta sticking power as an animation I guess. It was popular enough to originate the tradition of the Sadie Hawkins Dance throughout the US which was still around when I was in highschool in the late 90s.
this kind of reminds me of that Timon and Pumbaa episode where Pumbaa learned he has to get married and that according to the law, he does not have any saying of this and only the bride and break it off.

So, the marriage certificate of $2 in 1944 money, when adjusted for inflation, would equate to a little over $35 in 2024 money. Which isn’t terrible considering that it’s $60 to get a marriage certificate in my state.

These were terrible as was the 1940 live action movie. Capp was a brilliant satirist and social.commentator. However he had a tendency to merchandise to virtually anyone who bothered to ask. It's a product of growing up poor.
