    Loved watching the black and white and now the color. This took me back to the 1980s. I had a neighbor who was an artist and owned a gallery and frame shop. We marbled paper and I remember we needed alum to coat the paper because I had to research how to make it at the library. She had the paints and water set up when I got there, so I am not sure what she added to the paint. We were making large sheets of paper that required two people to lift. I remember we used a stick that had several nails or wire in the stick so we could move it through the paint to make designs. We also were making handmade paper at the time, but I don't remember if we marbled the handmade paper. Thanks for reminding of a special time.

    I wonder if Jane Davenport mermaid pens would work in water like this. The papers and technique are absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing how to create Catherine.

    • @catrains.artist
      @catrains.artist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you have these pens? I would love to hear if they work for you. This process is very tricky, so it takes a lot of experimenting to find ink that works. The marbling ink that I'm using here so far works the most consistently for me. Please let me know if you try the mermaid pens!

    • @diannelacourciere4129
      @diannelacourciere4129 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Catherine Rains they coloured the water but did not make patterns . I belive it was because I did not add rubbing alcohol or Dawn dish soap. Is the rubbing alcohol and Dawn what you mean by surfactant?

    • @catrains.artist
      @catrains.artist  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@diannelacourciere4129 Soap can be used as a surfactant, but it doesn't always work. Alcohol can be used to create designs in the marbled water, but doesn't work to help the paint float in the first place.

  • @redlady37
    @redlady37 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The soap breaks the surface tension and that is why your ink was sinking after you placed the soap in certain areas. It is also why you were unable to float the ink in the same areas again straight away.
    This is very beautiful, I really want to try this myself. I have just started creating collage papers myself. It is so freeing and I am enjoying it greatly.

    • @catrains.artist
      @catrains.artist  ปีที่แล้ว

      The acrylic inks are hit and miss in terms of working. You definitely need photo flo for these, and each one will take a different amount. Takes a bit of experimenting. Using the ink in the marbling kit is much easier.

    Totally fascinating - can't wait to try this - another great demo! My Photo -flo has already arrived, but I just ordered some of the handmade paper, the water vat (mine's kinda big), and two boxes of the Sumiundo Marbling inks. Fyi, the marbling ink link is goofy. (it's partially combined with Linseed Oil) Oh! Also - I can't wait for your new workshop to come out, sounds wonderful, I love to make things for friends and family.

    I'm definitely going to try that this week... my question is: when do you dip your brush in the soapy water? I saw you doing it in the first part of the video with the 3 dots paper and in the 3rd part... but in between min.: 11:40 and 18:40 do you use your soapy water again? TIA

    • @catrains.artist
