    Thank you for making a clear and informative video. Just tattooed our first litter using your method. It seemed to really help when we waited a full 2 minutes after applying the anesthetic spray.

    Hello! I just bought pliers after being continually frustrated with the tattoo pen for various reasons over the last two years. I am having a difficult time finding the answer to this question-do you rub off the ink with alcohol after brushing it on after using the pliers? I always clean the excess ink off after using our tattoo gun, but I'm not sure if it is better to let the ink dwell with the plier method, and I'd be glad to hear your thoughts! Thank you, and have a great day!

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You may be right. I usually leave the ink blotch on when using pliers and after about 10-14 days it’s faded and gone. As long as you fill the puncture holes with ink the tat should take.

    Researching this, the minimum age for tattooing is 12 weeks (according to breed organisation that does official tattoo) for the dwarfs i have, bigger a little earlier. To early means ears may be to small to avoid hitting the vein in the ear when tattooing.
    I use pliers, they are quick and easy. I only tattoo what i keep for breeding and mainly to keep bloodlines apart (along with who is who from my own breeding, what i buy usually doesn't have a tattoo and doesn't need one either). Rest is in the paperwork. Does get left ear, bucks right, since i don't sell old breeding stock or go to shows i don't need to keep such things in mind.

    I think I’m going to get the pliers because I don’t Have a long attention span and I feel like I would be so messy with the pen lol. I currently have two Holland lops and one Mini Rex. I’m currently looking for another mini Rex but I think for my Tattoo system I will do the breed initials and then the number of the rabbit so for Holland lops I’ll do HL001, HL002, HL003 etc.. what do you think? Only thing is I will eventually run out of numbers.

    • @hillockfarm8404

      Something with the year would be usefull, along with parent or somesuch identifier. Breed is easy enough to see without a tattoo, so why use tattoo space for it?
      Here my 4 space code goes : first : 1 number for order kept from that doeline, second : 1 letter for doeline, third and forth : last 2 digits of the year born. That gives me enough unique number/letter combo's since i only tattoo the kits i bred myself for breedingstock, bought new breeding stock and for dinner doesn't need tattooing.

    I recently donated some hay from my homestead for a relative to keep a rabbit in his apartment. I'm sharing this video with him, because he expressed an interest in tattooing the rabbit. It seems to be that the pen would be a lot more humane than using a pen. At any rate, it's nice to see that a pen can be used for something other than signing things.

    Also, another vid I saw said the tattoos shouldn't be applied before 8 weeks. Do you have info on what age the tattoo can be applied? If the rabbits are weaned at 6 weeks, then I'd have to figure out a way to keep off spring from each litter separate till they can be marked. Which is why I'm leaning toward the metal ear tags that could be applied just before they are weaned.

    • @TheRabbitryCenter
      @TheRabbitryCenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      7 to 8 weeks is a perfect time to tattoo your rabbits at that point the ear is big enough to easily tattoo
      If you need to temporarily mark them you can use a permanent marker which will last you 10 to 14 days until you can tattoo them.

    Does anyone use metal ear tags, like the ones sized for guinea pigs? I'm thinking the tags would be quick and easy, and I can keep track of who is who (& who they can breed with) in a log book. Males can be one color tag and females another color. And if a pet buyer wants to remove the tag, it's easy for a vet to do. Most of mine would only have the tag on till butcher time, but I want a way to easily track the off spring in case I decide to use one for breeding later. I might use different color tags based on the butcher date. I plan to free range the off spring together in a protected pen till butcher date. So being able to tell which ones to cull at a glance will be helpful.

      @@TheRabbitryCenter Working on getting 4 acres right now (offer accepted), but maybe I'll be able to update folks next year on ear tags. Seems way more simple to me. But maybe I'm missing something. I know they put them on day old chicks wings and they stay on even as the bird grows. And I would think that by weaning time, rabbit ears wouldn't have too much more to grow. I just don't know WHERE on the ear would be best, by the base, halfway up, near the tip? Missing veins of course. I would think that the lower on the ear that it is placed, the less likely it would be to get snagged on something. Which would be the biggest drawback of a tag.

    • @uftc1324
      @uftc1324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two reasons why people tattoo instead of tag.
      1. Because of how much rabbits like to scratch their ears (and clean in general) and the way the do it tags can very easily be ripped out.
      2. A tattoo is the only excitable identification in shows (at least in the USA, and I believe in the UK as well.)
      Even if you don’t show, if you sell a show rabbit (which when bred properly can make quite a profit) they cannot have damage to the ears . So, if you used tags for yourself and then wanted to sell show rabbits you would have to make sure they never had a tag.
      These are the reasons that I have seen for my self and herd. You can ask for more opinions on the “rabbittalk” forum there are a few showers/owners on there that may know morez

    • @kariholloway
      @kariholloway หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't recommend physical tags (metal or otherwise). I bought a doe who had a tag and something happened and her ear is basically torn from the hole to the tip (like forked) before we got her. Tags can get caught, and like earrings, can cause more damage than just tattooing in the long run.

    Do I need to get some type of approval or license to sell? I know like locally we need a permit to sale animals like at farmers market, but it's not rabbit specific, just animals in general.
    But like state law or rabbit association ect, do they require it?
    I'm in a few rabbit groups on FB but they are geared towards pets and attack breeders like they just stole an old ladies purse😂, so Its not safe to ask there

      I would try a different rabbit group for starters. I'd Check with your municipalities you don't have to tell them who you are or what you're doing but they can point you in the right direction of the rules and regulations for your county
      unless you're going to sell thousands of dollars worth of rabbits you won't need to get a license. But it's best to find out what you can and can't do without a license before moving forward.
