I i just randomly found one of your other videos and can’t stop watching them now. Thank you for creating these very helpful videos to help aspiring and new artist.
Read a thousand books and live a thousand lives. My 3 favorite art books are: - Works of Wonder by Michael Whelan - Icon by Frank Frazetta - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
This was a great overview of wonderful books. I personally own most of them. I have all of Jean Haines' books including "Paint Yourself Calm" and "Paint Yourself Positive." I love her style though my own style tends more toward realism. I love that she also shares her artistic journey and her open and encouraging approach to watercolor. Shirley Trevena's books are wonderful as well. Her work is amazing. I paint botanical art as well as a looser intuitive style. I like switching between the two to give myself breaks and a change.
I think I own most of these books as well. I love Felix Scheinberger and Jean Haines, but also Hazel Soan, if you don't know her books. Her use of light is absolutely stunning, and she has a nice way of teaching quick watercolour sketching in many of her books.
Great book recommendations! My favorite watercolor book authors are Jens Hübner and Ana victoria Calderon. I also really like the Danielle Donaldson books for inspiration.
I have several of Jean Haines books. I should dig them out again. Like you I’ve been painting 5 yrs with no art lessons. I started much later in life. 😬
Similar to the Felix Sheinberger book are books by Danny Gregory "An Illustrated Life" and "An Illustrated Journey", which both contain the watercolor sketchbooks of dozens of artists, in a multitude of styles. I love looking at people's work
Thanks - it’s fun to hear about your favourites. I love S Quiller’s & S Trevena’s books too, and look forward to checking out the other books you’ve highlighted. I just wanted to pass on that Shirley Trevena also has three great dvds. Her work is stunning! But she’s also a treasure herself. It’s wonderful to hear her reflections on art and her artistic journey, as well as see her creative process unfold on the dvds.
Thanks for sharing Vicki! Yes, I've seen she has DVDs, I guess it's just an outdated format for some of us, I mean I have a DVD player but I also kind of don't want to fuss with it... Oh we've come a long long way since VHS and are soooo spoiled now with streaming... Lol, off topic :) I am sure you're right and I should just grab it and see her in person and in action. If it's half as good as her books it's a treasure indeed.
Thank you so much for this inspiring video! I was watching it when doing a favourite art " chore" putting together a new watercolour palette, this time w granulating colours. It also made me go to my bookshelf and take out some books I haven,t looked at for a while and will now get inspiration from again, the books by Haines, Trevena, Donaldson and Sheinberger , so thank you for getting me reading them again!! If you like experimental and expressionistic watercolour I can recommend the books by Anne (?) Blockley, she uses all sorts of stuff to get texture and happy accidents, mostly landscape and flowers but always inspiring for trying new techniques. Another lovely book I have is " Making color sing" by J. Dobie, really great for colour theory and is not at all dry and boring as it sounds but have great examples how to use colours withe each other. Another good book about colours is J. Hrts " The watercolour artist´s guide to exceptional colour", it has given me lot of help w colours. Right now I am waiting for a new book to arrive I have seen recommended by some artista, I cannot now recall the authors name but the title is " How to make a watercolor paint itself". I love finding tips on new books, one doesn´t usually take everything in a book into ones own art but there are always new bits and stuff to learn and try out.
Thank you for sharing Charlotta! I have the Dobie and Blockley books (or one of her books), but I will check out the others you mentioned, always happy to discover new faves!
Wow your life story is fascinating! Just read it on your website. And I love your art style. I’m very colorful whimsy too but tend to not be as sophisticated as your art. Mine sometimes looks like a child painted it. But it is so fun and I love it 🥰🙂
Hello Irit…. I had to smile.. I have most of the books you shared…. Another artist’s books I enjoy is Anne Blockley…. She uses mixed media and creates such wonderful texture. Take care
Great selection! I would also like to add: COLOR, A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay. This is a great read. No instruction, no photos, just a sit and read about her travels to explore the stories of colors. Next is: Color In and Out of The Garden by Lorene Edward's Forkner. I've adopted her idea, but I paint the subject instead of photographing it on the swatches. And next, Anna Mason's Watercolor World.
Thank you for introducing me to your favourite authors. Jean Haines is one of my favourites- but my absolute favourite is Hazel Soan whose use of light is amazing. I have lots of her books - her books on African animals are exquisite. She does a series including Learn Colour in Painting Quickly and Learn to Paint People Quickly are my go to when I’m teaching as the use of colour theory is there too. Once again, thank you for your wonderful videos! 🇬🇧
Hi Irit! Sorrry it took so long. I work in the ER and had all my shifts early in the month to be off for the holidays. I finally have had a chance to flip through the books. The Quiller Color Choices is gorgeous - I love how he has specific color harmony examples so you can really appreciate the “feel” of a certain color story. I found a different Shirley Trevena book from the ones you mentioned - Shirley Trevena’s Watercolors (portraits, still lifes and abstracts). There is zero instruction in there, but it is a veritable feast for the eyes. Just gorgeous. I’d never heard of her before, and now I feel like I have a whole new style inspiration at my fingertips. Thank you for introducing her books so I can appreciate her work! The Danielle Donaldson one…it is okay but probably my least favorite. Her work is beautiful, but I’m not sure how much of it I would be likely to incorporate. Especially things like the stitching. But I will say the part I DO like is how her color washes and color choices almost look like candy in some of her pieces. And I like her line work. This is long so I am going to post a different one with some books I really enjoy, and I wonder if you might like them too…
TH-cam is doing that thing where the other post doesn’t show up. Please let me know if you can’t see the other post with books I think/hope you may enjoy…I am happy to resubmit. Have a wonderful day and happy holidays to you and your family!
Thanks for your feedback Erika! I am glad you like the books! Thinking about it the Danielle Donaldson book probably belongs more in a mixed media/illustrations book. For me it reminds me how much i learned about color application and color work from her at the beginning of my journey. Also sketching. Anyway, i will check if i can find that Shirley Travena book ;)
I also find Shirley Trevena’s work fascinating. The texture and interesting way of mark making … I need to get out my watercolors! Thank you for sharing. 😊
The fact that you still stand by your book recommendations (how many years later now?) is a great testament to them being awesome, and they are! And I so agree about Shirley Trevena’s books - they kind of blew my mind! I got the powdered charcoal and carbon paper and brought them into my art, very much inspired by her. Her way of flattening 3D images is fascinating to me:) I will now have to go look for Felix’s Domestika course!
Have fun!! Yeah I do love these books and it also makes me happy that I don't recommend random books. I have lots more in my library but these are the ones I keep going back to. I may have signed up to a new knitting course on Domestika starting this week 😬 oopsy
Any idea when you will get the stamp sets back in I want to order them , and with stage 4 pancreatic cancer I don’t know how much time I have left, maybe you’ll get them in time, love and hugs than you for everything you do for us !!!!!!
@@iritlandgraf I hope so can u put me as close to the top of the list as I’m not sure I have left alive although the have open research for a hospital for pancreatic cancer honestly I am optimistic but realistic so far things aren’t looking good after chemotherapy and poisoning my body with it hasn’t been useful but was for well over a year actually since the end of 2020 , I look for you videos every week and they’re inspirational and helpful to me, I’ve already told u i love ur videos and once again thank you for taking taking the time to do all u do to get them edited for us please let me know when stamp sets are back in stock and put me high up on your list ty Ty ty
Ann Blockley is also another artist I like . She has a few books, on painting loosely, florals and landscapes. Lots of color and different textures. Have a look. I have three of your choices in my library. 🥰🙋🏼♀️🇨🇦
Also I forgot to say how beautiful your painting is - the one on the easel behind you! It looks like if you could capture the feeling of a vacation and put it on paper….That’s what it feels like to me when I look at it.
Thanks for the book tips. I love Jean Haines and Hazel Sloan. I think you might like the artwork (she has no book) of Angela Fehr on TH-cam. You share her love for vibrant colours. My favourite urban sketcher is Marc Taro Holmes. I think he has some books. His style is also more impressionistic.
I strongly agree with your view on the Danielle Donaldson's books. I love love love her style and love the books (i own both) but i'm not a huge fan of the method of teaching (only because it doesn't work for me that much). Nonetheless I often browse her books just because i get inspired just looking at them, so that's something. Also love the Felix Scheinberger's ones on urban sketching. Great picks.
I figured since you so kindly shared book recommendations, it would be nice to share back! Having said that..I may very well have gotten some of these from your videos in the past, so you might already have them in your collection! If so - oops! But yeah, here are some I find inspiring: If You’re Bored with Watercolor, Read This Book (Lilja); Birds in Watercolor, Collage, and Ink (Zlatkis); Expressive Sketchbooks (Wells); Just Add Watercolor (Birch); The Watercolor Ideas Book (Goss).
I paused the video after you talked about Color Choices and found it on Amazon for $19.18 USD. Weird price, but whatever...affordable.😃 I am trying to learn more about composition and color theory, as I am weak on both of those.
I also have a few mentioned here but my recent favorite and I know you won't dig it too much is Die Kunst der Aquarellmalerei Laura Stahlmann. It's a german book only I believe and has a bunch of detailed tutorials on how to paint animals. For those that like painting animals and are beginning and looking for a german book this might be a good grab. It has a incredible high rating on Amazon which made me wan't to look into it initially.
I am here from random recommendations, and I was looking forward to see some new awesome art books.. and sorry to say that, but I would much more appreciate if you were directing your camera on the books, flip trough them, showing your favorite parts..an so on.. There is just you talking and waving hands for almost 30 min..:/ The flower painting behind you is beautiful though.
beautiful in your imagination so that carried me in this thought. please with the work I made to watch the results. Thank you my friend. 😊 😍😍❤❤ see my abstract too. thank you my friend.
*sigh* Your channel is bad for my wallet. Every time I click on a video I do so knowing I may end up purchasing either your stamps or books or Neocolor II crayons or god-knows what, haha. So yeah…obviously after watching this, $$$ damage was done. I just purchased used copies of the Quiller book, and one each of the Haines and Trevena books. I am in full-on justification mode, telling myself it’s okay because I purchased them used: it is like the “reduce reuse recycle” version of reading. So basically I am helping eliminate waste AND acquiring knowledge and inspiration. Despite my personal issues with impulse control 😅, I am still so happy you shared your insight on these books. Your own style is inspirational, so of course I am excited to take a peek at the work of artists who inspire you. Thank you for sharing, and have a great day!
I'm sorry not sorry?? I know what you mean, I am easily enabled and have made so many purchases after watching videos... But books are knowledge, and I think you will get so much from them. Buying used is fantastic! It is frustrating that sometimes used book shops (at least the ones I see on Amazon here in Austria) don't offer free shipping like Amazon does, so many times the used books are more expensive than new ones, and that is a bitter pill to swallow... Anyway, glad you enjoyed, please leave me a new comment (I don't get notified when people respond to comments, only new ones) and let me know how you like the books Erika!
For me this color theory book is something that is over doing the effect. Too strong colors for my taste. One of the mistakes in my very subjective opinion is overdoing something ie a effect or color etc.
Have you read the book? It discusses the theory with lots of examples for many color schemes, some use few colors and some many. Of course to each his own 👍
@@iritlandgraf i have shuffled it few times in shop. I am interested in color theory and its effects but i notice that most authors use it very strongly. Of the people who used it best are impressionists.
I love learning from self taught artists, motivates me to stay with practicing!
You can do it!
I i just randomly found one of your other videos and can’t stop watching them now. Thank you for creating these very helpful videos to help aspiring and new artist.
My pleasure and welcome!
Yay... Friday is better now.. I will get my cup and coffee and enjoy some art time with Irit..!!
Haha great to have you here! enjoy J Marie!
Terry Harrison's books were a game changer for me in painting landscapes. His book on painting trees is especially good.
Thanks for sharing!
I love every book from Shirley Trevena..
Read a thousand books and live a thousand lives.

Thank you for recommending these, and for explaining why. It's super helpful! ☺️
You're so welcome!
I’m so happy I found your channel!
Welcome!!
Thanks for this wonderful video! I watched it and reserved all the books that were available at my local library!
You are so generous with your time and knowledge. This is costing me a pretty penny, but we’ll worth it. Thank you, liked and subscribed.
